Longitudinal Analysis on the Reciprocal Relationship between Depression and Marital Satisfaction among Older Couples (노년기 부부의 우울과 부부관계만족도 간의 종단적 관계)

  • The purpose of this research is to examine the reciprocal relationships between depression and marital satisfaction among older couples. For longitudinal dyadic analysis, this study sets up a research model based on the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model, the Common Fate Model, and Autoregressive Cross-Lagged Model. Data came from four annual waves from the 10th year (2015) to the 13th year (2018) of the Korean Welfare Panel Survey and the final sample comprised a total of 1,383 married couples over 60 years of age in 2015. Structural Equation Modeling identified the reciprocal relationship between depression and marital satisfaction among older couples, with higher marital satisfaction of older couples leading to lower depression of husbands' and wives', and with higher depression of husbands' and wives' inducing lower marital satisfaction of the couples. Thus, this study suggested that longitudinal interplay between depression and marital satisfaction can lead to a vicious cycle. Based on these findings, the need to intervene at both the individual level and the couple level was discussed in order to reduce depression and improve marital satisfaction.

The Longitudinal Relationship Between Self-Esteem and Peer Relationship in Adolescence: Using Autoregressive Cross-Lagged Modeling (청소년의 자아존중감과 또래관계의 자기회귀교차지연효과검증)

  • Objective: This study focused on the longitudinal associations between self-esteem and peer relationships in Korean adolescents while considering gender and timing-early and late adolescence-differences. Methods: The study made use of data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey. Three waves of data collected from 2,351 adolescents were analyzed by means of autoregressive cross-lagged modeling. Results: The results indicated that self-esteem predicted subsequent changes in peer relationship but not vice versa. Further, the results that longitudinal associations between self-esteem and peer relationships differed between male and female adolescents and between early and late adolescence. Conclusion: The findings revaluated the longitudinal relationship between self-esteem and peer relationships. Both gender and timing should be considered when planning interventions related issues about self-esteem and peer relationships in adolescence.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 청소년기의 사회적 위축과 또래관계, 그리고 우울 간에 어떠한 종단적 관계가 있는지 검증하고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 본 연구에서는 한국아동 청소년패널조사(KCYPS) 중학교 1학년 2, 3차년도 자료에 대하여 자기회귀 교차지연모형을 구성하고 이에 대하여 구조방정식을 이용하여 실증적 검증을 실시하였다. 분석 결과, 2차년도의 사회적 위축, 또래관계, 우울은 각각 3차년도의 동일한 변인에 대하여 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 2차년도의 또래관계는 3차년도의 사회적 위축과 우울에 모두 유의한 영향을 미치는 반면, 2차년도의 사회적 위축과 우울은 각각 3차년도의 또래관계에만 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 이상에서 도출된 연구 결과에 근거하여 사회적 위축과 또래관계, 그리고 우울을 경험하고 있는 청소년들에 대한 예방 및 개입과 관련된 함의가 제시되었다.

Analysis of the Longitudinal Relationship between Recovery and Adaptation Factors According to Types of School Violence Exposure in Youth: Focusing on Resilience and Social Support (청소년의 학교폭력노출 유형에 따른 회복과 적응을 위한 요인 간의 종단적 관계 분석: 사회적지지와 회복탄력성을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the longitudinal relationship between resilience and social support of school violence exposure types including school bullying, victimization, and dual experience. The study used data obtained from the third year (2012) of the Seoul Education Longitudinal Study of 1,137 elementary school students in grade 6 who reported experiencing school violence. The results of the autoregressive cross-lagged model are as follows. First, as a result of measuring the self-regression coefficients of resilience and social support of the youth exposed to school violence at 3 time points (2012, 2014, and 2016), it was found for all types of violence that resilience and social support at the previous time point showed a signigicant positive effect on the same variable at the next time point. Second, in the case of the cross-lagged effects of resilience and social support, the effect of previous social support on resilience at the next time point was statistically significant for the victimization group, but not for the bullying or dual experience groups. Third, considering the opposite path from resilience to social support, resilience at the previous time point had a significant influence on the social support at the next time point for both the bullying and victimization groups. This result is new and can be complementary to the cross-sectional studies so far using a longitudinal view. The results of this study suggest that the bullying and victimized students who are relatively more resilient are less likely to perceive social support than those who are not resilient. Finally, we discuss the longitudinal relationship between resilience and social support, the limitations of this study, and implications for future research.

The Reciprocal Relationship Between Young Children's Vocabulary Ability and Physical Aggression: A Longitudinal Study Using Autoregressive Cross-lagged Modeling (유아기의 어휘력과 신체적 공격성 간의 상호 영향: 자기회귀교차지연모형을 활용한 종단연구)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to identify the longitudinal reciprocal relationship between young children's vocabulary ability and physical aggression in young children. Methods: Two waves of panel data(2013/2015) from the Panel Study of Korean Children were analyzed in this study by using an adapted version of Autoregressive cross-lagged modeling. A total of 306 five-year-old and seven-year-old preschoolers, and their mothers participated in the study. Autoregressive cross-lagged modeling for multiple groups was conducted by using AMOS 24.0. Results: First, vocabulary ability and physical aggression showed stability over time. Second, young children's vocabulary ability(t) had a statistically significant effect on physical aggression(t+1). Conclusion/Implications: This study confirmed the interrelationships of young children's vocabulary ability and physical aggression by examining longitudinal data using the longitudinal analysis method. This study highlights the importance of developing interventions to support language development with aggressive children. The results of the present study can be used as a source in developing policies for aggressive children and their parents.

The Reciprocal Relationship between Caregiver Relations and Peer Relations of Children in Out-of-home Care: Longitudinal Study Using Autoregressive Cross-lagged Modeling (가정외보호 아동의 양육자 관계와 교우관계의 상호 영향: 자기회귀교차지연모형을 활용한 종단연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the longitudinal causal relationship between caregiver relations and peer relations of children in out-of-home care. We analyzed the three years(2011-2013) of longitudinal data from the Panel Study on Korean Children in Out-of-Home Care. The autoregressive cross-lagged model (ARCL) was used to measure the longitudinal causal relationship between caregiver relations and peer relations. As a result, first, caregiver relations and peer relations showed stability over time. In other words, the results of the measurement at three time points showed that the caregiver relations and peer relations at the previous time had a significant effect on the caregiver relations and peer relations at the later time point. Second, the previous caregiver relations had a significant effect on the subsequent peer relations over time. Third, the previous peer relations had a significant effect on the subsequent caregiver relations over time. This study confirmed the interrelationships of caregiver relations and peer relations of children in care by examining the longitudinal data using the longitudinal analysis method.

A Study on the Longitudinal Relation Between Early Adolescents' Mobile Phone Dependency and Self-Regulated Learning Using an Autoregressive Cross-Lagged Modeling: Multigroup Analysis Across Gender (초기청소년의 휴대전화의존도와 자기조절학습 간 자기회귀교차지연 효과 검증: 성별 간 다집단 분석)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the bidirectional relation between mobile phone dependency (MPD) and self-regulated learning (SRL) of early Korean adolescents in $4^{th}$, $6^{th}$ and $8^{th}$ grade, while taking into account gender differences. Methods: The study made use of panel data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Study (KCYPS), and three waves of data collected from 2,264 adolescents were analyzed by means of autoregressive cross-lagged modeling. Results: The results can be summarized as follows. Firstly, MPD and SRL were consistently stable for adolescents in $4^{th}$, $6^{th}$ to $8^{th}$ grades. Secondly, a bidirectional relations between MPD and SRL were confirmed. In other words, there was a significant influence of a high level of MPD on a subsequent low level of SRL, and the high level of SRL also had a significant effect on the lower level of MPD across time. According to multi-group analysis, no gender differences were found in the relations between two constructs during the studied period. Conclusion: Findings highlighted not only the necessary media usage education but also parenting intervention strategies may help early adolescents to be prevented from negative effects of media usage and to enhance self-regulated learning ability. Based on the results, more implications were also discussed.

A Causal Analysis of Suicidal Impulse in the Context of Parents, Friends, Teachers and Community Support: Gender Difference (부모, 친구, 교사, 지역사회 지지와 청소년의 자살충동간 인과관계 분석 : 성별 차이를 중심으로)

  • Given the 4 contexts-parents, friends, teachers and community- of adolescents, this research verified the casual relationships between each contextual support and the suicidal impulse, and the gender difference. The 4-year longitudinal data(KYPS) collected from 3,697 adolescents were used in this study. Using the Autoregressive Cross-Lagged Model, the suicidal impulse was consistently present from the 3rd grade in middle school to the 3rd grade in high school with significant stability. Gender differences were founded in the effect of parental support among the 3rd grade in middle school. Also the negative effect of friends' support on the suicidal impulse among the first grade high school students. The effects were more stronger for girls than boys. Previous supports by teachers and community had no significant effects on later suicidal impulses. These results suggest that the study of suicidal impulse needs to examine the complex support system of multiple context layers.

The reciprocal relationships between parenting attitudes and emotional problems in adolescence: A longitudinal cross-lagged analysis (부모 양육태도와 청소년의 정서문제 간의 상호적 관계: 종단적 자기회귀교차지연 분석)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify the reciprocal relationship between parenting attitudes (positive and negative) and adolescent emotional problems as indicated by aggression, social withdrawal, and depression. Methods: This study analyzed longitudinal data from 2,325 parents and their children from the Korea Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 at three time points over a three-year period (the first to third grade of middle school). Autoregressive cross-lagged modeling was conducted using AMOS 26.0. Results: The results indicated that both parenting attitudes and adolescents' emotional problems were relatively stable over time. In other words, the parenting attitude at a previous point affects the parenting attitude at a later point, and the emotional problem at the previous point continues to affect the emotional problem at the later point. There were no significant cross-lagged effects from both positive and negative parenting attitudes to adolescents' emotional problems. In contrast, adolescents' emotional problems at previous time points positively predicted negative parenting attitudes at later time points. In other words, if there were many emotional problems of aggression, social withdrawal, and depression in adolescents at a previous time, negative parenting attitudes such as rejection, force, and inconsistency at a later time increased. Conclusion: This study can reflect the characteristics of the development of independence in adolescence. Parents should deal with their children's emotional problems based on their understanding of the developmental characteristics of adolescence, and this study provides a strategy for parents to establish appropriate parenting attitudes for adolescents with emotional problems.

Longitudinal Relationships between Academic Achievement and School Satisfaction :Using Fully Autoregressive Cross-Lagged Modeling and Multi-group Analysis by Poverty Status (학업성취와 학교만족도의 종단적 상호 관계 : 빈곤 및 비빈곤 집단 차이를 중심으로)

  • This study examined the longitudinal relationship between academic achievement and school satisfaction using a data of the Seoul Panel Study of Children(SPSC). Fully autoregressive cross-lagged analysis and multi-group comparison were performed to measure the longitudinal relationship between two constructs as well as differences between poverty and non-poverty groups. The results showed that both academic achievement and school satisfaction were stable over time in non-poverty group. Academic achievement at the 4th grade significantly affected the school satisfaction at the 6th grade and it subsequently affected on the academic achievement at the 8th grade in non-poverty group. In contrast, academic achievement was not consistent over time in poverty group. Only the school satisfaction at the 6th grade affected the academic achievement at the 8th grade. The findings of this study have various practical implication for school interventions. It is more important to keep supporting the children to maintain the level of academic achievement in non-poverty group. While, in poverty group, it is essential to make school satisfaction and academic motivation increase with school attachment programs.
