  • We developed problem-solving type inquiry learning programs reflecting scientists' research process and analyzed the activities of science-gifted high school students, and the understanding and the effects of the programs after implementation in class. For this study, twelve science-gifted students in the 10th grade participated in the program, which consisted of three different modules - making a cycloidal pendulum, surface growth, and synchronization using metronomes. Diet Cola Test (DCT) was used to find out the effect on the improvement of the ability to design experiments by comparing pre/post scores, with a survey and an interview being conducted after the class. Each module consisted of a series of processes such as questioning the phenomenon scientifically, designing experiments to find solutions, and doing activities to solve the problems. These enable students to experience problem-solving type research process through the program class. According to this analysis, most students were likely to understand the characteristics of problem-solving type inquiry learning programs reflecting the scientists' research process. According to the students, there are some differences between this program class and existing school class. The differences are: 'explaining phenomenon scientifically,' 'designing experiments for themselves,' and 'repeating the experiments several times.' During the class students have to think continuously, design several experiments, and carry them out to solve the problems they found at first. Then finally, they were able to solve the problems. While repeating this kind of activities they have been able to experience the scientists' research process. Also, they showed a positive attitude toward the scientists' research by understanding problem-solving type research process. These problem-solving type inquiry learning programs seem to have positive effects on students in designing experiments and offering the opportunity for critical argumentation on the causes of the phenomena. The results of comparing pre/post scores for DCT revealed that almost every student has improved his/her ability to design experiments. Students who were accustomed to following teacher's instructions have had difficulty in designing the experiments for themselves at the beginning of the class, but gradually, they become used to doing it through the class and finally were able to do it systematically.

  • Bone marrow necrosis is a rare complication of a variety of diseases affecting the marrow. The cause and incidence are unknown, and reports of treatment response are rare. We describe a case of relapsed acute mixed type leukemia with bone marrow necrosis. The patient was a 10 year old female diagnosed with acute mixed type leukemia four years ago. She had been on second remission state for 1 year, presented with severe back pain, tenderness in lower extremities, low-grade fever and general weakness. Her level of serum lactic dehydrogenase on admission was increased. Bone marrow aspiration from both posterior iliac crest showed marrow necrosis. Subsequent examination showed the same feature. Hip MRI showed heterogenous low signal intensity in both iliac bone on T-1 weighted image and heterogenous high signal intensity on T-2 wieghted image. Remission induction therapy was started but she expired on 59th hospital day due to the complication of sepsis.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of motivation promotion on task performance. Unlike most previous studies that have used survey methods, this study examined the effects of motivation promotion on arithmetic and linguistic task performances under experimental conditions. Effort-inducing instructions and positive feedbacks were used to promote participants' motivation. Experiments 1 and 2 examined the effect of effort-inducing instructions and positive feedback on participants' autonomous selection of task difficulty when performing arithmetic and linguistic tasks. The results of the both experiments showed that the experimental group which received effort-inducing instructions and positive feedback chose more difficult task than the control group did. Experiment 3 examined whether motivation promotion enhances task performance and task persistence. The experimental group was more accurate and persistent than the control group. The results of the current study offer experimental evidence suggesting that activating intrinsic motivation through motivation promotion improves attitudes toward tasks and task performance.

  • Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome is a rare disorder and lead to claudication and disturbance of blood flow from the results of an abnormal relationship of the popliteal artery to the gastrocnemius muscle, a fibrous band or the popliteus muscle in a young male population. The specific diagnosis is difficult, In most cases, surgical treatment provides a definitive diagnosis of the lesion and is necessary for the patient's recovery. A 34-years-old male was admitted complaining of claudication and pain on left leg. Ankle-brachial index, vascular sonography, CT-angiogram and MRI revealed an occlusion of proximal popliteal artery of left leg. The patient was confirmed as a popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (type IV) that the popliteal artery was entrapped by a fibrous band around the popliteus muscle in the operative fold. Completely occluded fibrotic popliteal artery was removed, and interposition with ipsilateral greater saphenous vein graft was done. After surgery, symptoms of the patient have improved.

  • Purpose : Bacterial meningitis is a serious disease, especially in the neonatal period, and it carries a significant degree of mortality and morbidity. Group B streptococcus(GBS) is a common cause of neonatal bacterial meningitis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical manifestations, treatment results and complications of GBS meningitis. Methods : We analyzed 29 cases retrospectively who had been admitted to the pediatric ward or NICU in Asan Medical Center from May 1990 to January 2002. They had proven GBS in culture or latex agglutination test in CSF. Results : The male to female ratio was 1 : 1.9. There were two cases of early onset type and 27 cases of late onset type. All cases had normal birth weight with full term at delivery. The perinatal predisposing factors were premature rupture of membrane(two cases), and maternal colonization(two cases). The most common presenting symptoms were fever and irritability. Associated diseases were GBS sepsis(21 cases). There was relatively high sensitivity to penicillin derivatives. There were abnormal brain CT or MRI findings in 16 cases(64%), such as infarction, encephalomalatic change, effusion, hydrocephalus, hemorrhage and abscess. The intensive care unit admission rate and the incidence of DIC were higher in the group with complications. Two cases were discharged against advice. Conclusion : We recommend early detection and active treatment in Group B streptococcal meningitis to improve the prognosis.

  • Forty patients meeting DSM-III-H criteria for panic disorder and 51 normal controls were assessed with the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-Revised(PDQ-R), a self-rating scale designed to assess Axis II personality disorders and traits. Results replicated previous findings of a preponderance of dependent, avoidant, and histrionic features. But our result showed other features such as paranoid, schizotypal, borderline, and antisocial traits also. Patients were divided into two groups according to the severity of their personality traits(high or low). These groups were compared in various panic symptomatology and SCL-90-R. None of the specific symptom dimensions in panic disorder, i.e. panic, anxiety, agoraphobia, social impairment, or chronicity was different between groups. Rather, high personality trait groups were found to have significantly more symptomatology in SCR-90-R than low personality groups. Result indicated that patients exhibiting a greater number of personality traits were also significantly more symptomatic. The results suggested a possible link beteween panic disorder and personality disorder. And, general factors such as depression, social or interpersonal sensitivity might provide a much better explanation of personality disorders in panic patients.

  • The purpose of the study is to develop a questionnaire that examines unskeptical attitudes in scientific inquiry context. The questionnaire items were developed through literature research, expert review, and statistical analyses for validity and the differences in scores were identified by gender and tracks. A total of 363 high school students participated in the study. To explore the validity evidence of items, the Rasch analysis and the reliability of internal consistency were performed, and the two-way ANOVA was performed to compare the scores of the unskeptical attitudes between gender and academic track. Self-reporting and Likert-scaling 23 items were developed to measure unskeptical attitudes in scientific inquiry context. The items were developed in the sub-domain of scientific inquiry: 'questioning and hypothesis generating,' 'experiment designing,' and 'explaining and interpreting.' Second, the validity and reliability of the unskeptical were identified in a rigorous method. The validity of items were identified by multi-dimensional partial score model analysis through the Rasch model, and all 23 items were found to be fit to model. Various reliability evidences were also found to be appropriate. It was found that there were no significant differences of unskeptical attitude score between the gender and academic track except one comparison. The developed questionnaire could be used to check an unskeptical attitude in the course of scientific inquiry and to compare the effects of scientific inquiry classes.

  • The need for polar education was further emphasized, depending on the importance of the pole, which is the best place for climate change detection and prediction, and treasure trove of future technology and resources. Therefore, this study analyzed the general cognitive and affective characteristics of elementary school students' polar literacy, and in addition, analyzed the cognitive and affective characteristics according to the level of diversity about polar experience. The items developed for the study were revised through a pilot survey of 43 fifth graders. They consisted of questions about gender, polar experience, scientific literacy, polar knowledge, polar literacy skills, polar literacy beliefs, and polar literacy attitudes. The types of questions used are selectable, reliable, and Likert (4 points), for a total of 66 questions. The students who participated in the study were 323 fifth grade elementary students. The study found that students were more interested in the dramatic consequences of polar changes than the scientific causes and processes associated with it. This is confirmed through the fact that they are more interested in and familiar with polar creatures suffering from polar changes than understanding ice, which is the main feature of and the central mechanism of polar changes. Students also recognized the issue of polar climate change as a global issue other than their own. They believe that what happens in the Arctic and Antarctica will affect the whole world, but not significantly to himself and his community. The level of knowledge about polar region and the ability to analyze and infer were not significantly related to each other, and students with a higher level of diversity of experience about polar region had a better understanding of polar science and technology. In this research, it is meaningful to check the characteristics related to the students' polar region and to use it as a basic data to show the direction in which polar literacy education should proceed in the future.

  • Purpose: We wanted to report the clinical characteristics and arthroscopic findings of radial tear in medial meniscus posterior horn insertion, commonly occurs in patient over middle age with documentary review. Materials and Methods: Retrograde study using hospital records was done to 40 cases in 40 patients who visited our hospital and had been performed knee arthroscopic surgery due to medial meniscus posterior horn insertion tear between January, 2005 to April, 2007. Seven cases were male and 33 cases were female with the mean age of 61 (range, 47-80). Trauma history, stage of arthritis, period between pain and operation, MRI findings, clinical symptoms and operation methods were evaluated. Results : Six cases had trauma history while 34 cases didn't. In simple x-ray, using Kellgren-Lawrence classification, 31 cases were between stage 0 and II while 9 cases were stage III. In arthroscopic exam, there were 17 cases of Outerbridge grade IV, 4 cases of grade III, 9 cases of grade II, 9 cases of grade I. The mean duration of pain was 5.3 months. In MRI, at least one finding of cleft in axial or coronal view or ghost sign in sagittal view was found in all cases. The shape of meniscus tears were blunt in 18 cases, transverse in 12 and degenerative tear in 10. Subtotal meniscectomy was performed in 16 cases, partial meniscectomy in 10 cases and meniscal repair in 14 cases. Conclusion : Medial meniscus posterior horn insertion tear occurs in patients over middle age is rarely related to trauma history but causes painful mechanical symptom and usually accompany arthritis. Meniscectomy can be done for the treatment but repair can be considered is some cases. Further study on the treatment result will be needed.

  • This study was to examine the effects of teacher's encouraging language on elementary student's adjustment to school life. To achieve this purpose, teacher's encouraging language were drawn from Adlerian literatures and ten principles of encouragement were established as the following: recognizing the student's values and potentials, putting an emphasis on student's positive sides, helping the student realize his or her own strength, tolerating student's mistakes, using perceptual alternatives, practicing self-encouragement, accepting and supporting opponents, stimulating internal motivations, and emphasizing social usefulness. Subjects were 34 1st graders at J elementary school in CheonNam. 17 subjects were assigned to experiment group and 17 subjects were assigned to control group. Teacher's encouraging language were applied to experiment group and teacher's usual languages were provided to control group for ten weeks. The quantitative data were collected through Elementary school adjustment behavior rating scale(Oh, 2009) and were analysed via ANCOVA. The qualitative data were collected through observations and products of the subjects and were analysed via qualitative methods. The results showed that teacher's encouraging language had a positive effect on the student's adjustment to school life.
