The Shape Preferred Orientation (SPO) method has been used to analyze the orientation of fault motion, which is utilized as basic data for fault kinematics studies. The rigid grains, which as quartz, feldspar, and rock fragments, in the fault gouge are arranged in the P-shear direction through rigid body rotation by a given shear stress. Using this characteristic, the fault motion can be estimated from the SPO inversely. Recently, a method for securing precision and reliability by measuring 3D-SPO using X-ray CT images and examining the shape of a large number of particles in a short time has been developed. As a result, the SPO method analyzes the orientation of thousands to tens of thousands of particles at high speed, suggests the direction of fault motion, and provides easy accessibility and reliable data. In addition, the shape information and orientation distribution data of particles, which are by-products obtained in the SPO analysis process, are expected to be used as basic data for conducting various studies such as the local deformation of fault rocks and the fault generation mechanism.
The objectives of this investigation were to obtain an excellent spray by cavitation under the low injection pressure. When cavitation occurs in the nozzle hole, the atomization of the liquid jet enhanced considerably. In this experiments, a acrylic nozzle made the gap and installed the bypass in the nozzle hole was used to enhance the atomization of the liquid jet at the low injection pressure. The liquid flow in the nozzle hole was photographed by a transmitted light using a micro flash. The spray angle was measured macroscope images of PMAS and the Sauter mean diameter was measured PDA system. To measure the pressure of the nozzle hole, pressure transducer was used. The results of this study indicated that enhanced atomization of the liquid jet at the low injection pressure was obtained by making the gap and installing the bypass at the single hole nozzle.

Dielectrophoresis (DEP) is defined as the motion of suspended particles in solvent resulting from polarization forces induced by an inhomogeneous electric field. DEP has been utilized for various biological applications such as trapping, sorting, separation of cells, viruses, nanoparticles. However, the analysis of DEP trapping has mostly employed the period-averaged ponderomotive forces while the dynamic features of DEP trapping have not been attracted because the target object is relatively large. Such approach is not appropriate for the nanoscale analysis in which the size of object is considerably small. In this study, we thoroughly investigate the dynamic response of trapping to various system parameters and its influence on the trapping stability. The effects of particle conductivity on its motion are also focused.

The impact force on the single and overlap region of twin spray was experimentally evaluated using visualization method in full cone type swirl nozzle spray. Visualization of spray was conducted to obtain the spray angle and breakup process. The photography/imaging technique, based on Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) using high-speed camera, was adopted for the direct observation of droplet motion and axial velocity measurement, respectively. Droplet size was measured by Particle Motion Analyze System (PMAS). The purpose of this study is to provide fundamental information of spray characteristics, such as impact force, for higher etching factor in the practical wet etching system. It was found that the spray angle, axial velocity and impact force were increased with increasing the nozzle pressure while droplet size decreased with increasing the nozzle pressure. Droplet size increased as the distance from nozzle tip was decreased. The impact force of twin spray in the overlap region was about 63.29, 67.02, 52.41% higher than that of single spray at 40, 50 and 60 mm of nozzle pitch, respectively. Also, the nozzle pitch was one of the important factors in the twin spray characteristics.
In the field of fluid dynamics, the sloshing effects are most common and significant problem. It is usually appeared in the tank filled with fluid which is on the main structure, thus, sloshing effects and its impact load may affect to entire system. For the sloshing effects analysis, impact loads due to tank motion is generally investigated theocratically, experimentally and numerically. The difficulty of sloshing phenomenon is non-linearity induced by large deformation at the free-surface. In this regard, it is well known issue that the repeatability on the sloshing problems is very low. In this study, moving particle semi-implicit method was employed to simulate sloshing problem and then the results were compared with corresponding experiments captured by high accuracy high speed camera. The results from numerical simulation was compared to experimental results.
In recently, a study on the lean combustion is investigated intensively, because it is expected that this method may decrease the harmful exhaust gas and improve fuel economy in gasoline engine. The problems of lean combustion system in gasoline engine are ignition difficulty, misfire and instability of combustion. The investigation on the optimization of fuel metering and the control of mixing gas flow may be critical to improve the performance of lean combustion. In the fuel injection gasoline engine, the formation of mixture influences strongly on the engine performance such that the importance of fuel metering system becomes apparent. First of all, a study on the fuel breakup characteristics of gasoline fuel injector was carried out in this paper. Fuel injectors are pintle and 4hole-2spray type. The purpose of this study is to clarify the atomization mechanism of spray injected into atomosphere field through electronic controlled-fuel injectors, and to analyze spray characteristics such as drop size distribution and mean drop diameter produced at fuel injector. In this paper, the spray development is observed by taking photograps using 80mm still-camera system, and drop sizes are measured by PMAS. From these experiment, spray pattern injected from gasoline fuel injectors was investigated clearly. Also, it was found that SMD and drop size distribution of injected fuel spray from gasoline fuel injectors.

In coastal region, eutrophication, Do deficit and red tide are frequently occurred by influx of fresh water. When the fresh water containing pollutants is discharged into the sea, the surrounding water is contaminated by dispersion of freshwater flowing into coastal waters. The prediction and analysis about the dispersion process of the discharged fresh water should be conducted. A modeling system using GUI was developed to simulate hydrodynamic flow and fresh water dispersion in coastal waters and to analyze the results efficiently. The modeling module of the system includes a tide model using a finite element method and a fresh water dispersion model using a particle-tracking method. This system was applied to predict the tidal currents and fresh water dispersion in Mokpo coastal zone. To verify accuracy of the hydrodynamic model, the simulation results were compared with observed sea level and time variations of tidal currents showing a good agreement. The fresh water dispersion was verified with observed salinity distribution. The dispersion model also was verified with analytic solutions with advection-diffusion problems in 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional simple domain. The system is operated on GUI environment, to ease the model handling such as inputting data and displaying results. Therefore, anyone can use the system conveniently and observe easily and accurately the simulation results by using graphic functions included in the system. This system can be used widely to decrease the environmental disaster induced by inflow of fresh water into coastal waters.
The measurement technique with dynamic shock sensor was widely used in academic experiment for blasting and impact. However, most of dynamic sensors are expensive so that it needs to be protected by external housing structures or damping devices. In this study, the calibration method for dynamic shock sensor under the distortion by external structures. Hopkinson pressure bar system was adopted to measure the input acceleration to the sensor, and it was compared to the acceleration measured by accelerometer with customized damping device. Consequently, it is conclued that this method can be useful to calibrate the dynamic shock sensor under the linear distortion.
