This research was performed by means of several different virgin granular activated carbons (GAC) made of each coal, coconut and wood, and the GACs were investigated for an adsorption performance of bromate in a continuous adsorption column. Breakthrough behavior was investigated that the breakthrough points of the virgin two coals-, coconut- and wood-based GACs were observed as 9252 bed volume (BV), 6821 BV, 5291 BV and 2431 BV, respectively. The experimental results of adsorption capacity (X/M) for bromate showed that two coal- based GACs were highest (1334.5 and 798.2 ${\mu}g$/g), the coconut-based GAC was intermediate (668.6 ${\mu}g$/g) and the wood-based GAC was lowest (156.8 ${\mu}g$/g). The X/M of the coal-based GACs was 2~8.5 times higher than the X/M of the coconut-based and wood-based GACs. The results of carbon usage rates (CURs) for the virgin two coal-, coconut- and wood-based GACs were shown as 0.19, 0.25, 0.33 and 0.71 g/day respectively. The adsorption capacity, k values, were also investigated by means of the GACs for bromate. The k values of two coal-, coconut- and wood- based GACs for bromate were found to be 121.3, 76.7, 43.3 and 14.6 respectively. This results suggested that using the virgin GAC made of coal was the best selection for removal of bromate in the water treatment for an advanced treatment.

Toluene of aromatic compounds, MEK of ketones and IPA of alcohols were extremely used as VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) on the getting into step with industrial process. The adsorption characteristics of three component solvent vapors (Toluene-MEK-IPA) on the activated carbonaceous adsorbents such as AC, ACF and AC+ACF were investigated in a stainless steel fixed bed adsorption experimental apparatus in order to identify those carbons for eliminating and recovering solvent vapors from industrial emission sources. The used activated carbonaceous adsorbents were pelletized commercial activated carbon and activated carbon fiber. The breakthrough curves and adsorption capacity have been obtained at atmospheric pressure in a adsorption fixed bed. It has been found that non-polar and larger molecules have been adsorbed better than polar and smaller molecules. Especially, alcohols and ketones were poorly adsorbed due to competitive adsorbability in ternary mixture system. However, it could be overcome by employment of activated carbonaceous adsorbent which have different porosity distribution appropriately.
In recent tests using tracer have been frequently conducted by fluorescent tracers. In this study, granular activated charcoal (GAC) as a detector for the fluorescent tracers (rhodamine WT and uranine) was investigated through laboratory and field tests. In the laboratory tests, tracer concentrations of rhodamine WT and uranine determined by the GAC were slightly different from those of standard solutions but they were excellent in linearity. Results show that GAC is excellent as tracer detector when concentration of the fluorescent tracers is greater than 10 & micro; g/L whileas no obvious differences in mixed solutions of the two tracers due to interferences. Compared to conventional methods of water sampling, field results shows a high potential of GAC as a tracer in the field. Our results also show that wet analysis is better for the lower concentrations of tracers whileas dry analysis is good for high concentrations of tracers. This study demonstrates that fluorescent tracer detection using the GAC is very useful and economical for a hydraulic connection between target areas and very longer period of the tracer test.
Removal of hexavalent chromium from artificial groundwater (AGW) by granular activated carbon (GAC) was investigated in batch and continuous-flow column studies. Experimental parameters that were examined included solution pH, presence of dissolved oxygen (DO), and GAC pretreatment with Fe(II). As the solution pH increased from 4 to 7.5, the amount of Cr(VI) removed by both GACs decreased significantly. Exclusion of DO from the experimental systems resulted in greater removal of Cr(VI) from solution, possibly as a result of reduction to Cr(III). However, pretreatment of the GAC with a reductant (Fe(II)) did not improve Cr(VI) removal. Equilibration With 0.01 M $K_2$$HPO_4$[to extract adsorbed Cr(VI)] followed by a wash with 0.02 N $K_2$$HPO_4$[to remove precipitated/sorbed Cr(III)] proved to be a viable approach for the regeneration of carbons whose Cr(VI) removal capacities had been exhausted. The performance of the regenerated carbons exceeded that of the virgin carbons, primarily because of the favorable adsorption of Cr(VI) at lower pH values and the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III), The presence of Cr(III) in acid wash solutions provides direct evidence that Cr(VI) is reduced to Cr(III) in GAC systems under relatively acidic conditions. GAC performance over five complete cycles was consistently high, which suggests that such a system will be able to function over many operation cycles without deleterious effects.
In the present study, batch experiments were carried out for the utilizatioin of activated carbon as a potential adsorbent to remove a hazardous malachite green from an aqueous solution. The effects of various parameters such as temperature, contact time, initial concentration on the adsorption system were investigated. On the basis of adsorption data Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm model were also confirmed. The equilibrium process was described well by Langmuir isotherm model. From determined separation factor, the activated carbon could be employed as an effective treatment for removal of malachite green. From kinetic experiments, the adsorption process followed the pseudo second order model, and the adsorption rate constant ($k_2$) decreased with increasing both the initial concentration of malachite green and the adsoprtion temperature. Thermodynamic parameters like that activation energy, change of free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were also calculated to predict the adsorption nature. The activation energy calculated from Arrhenius equation indicated that the adsortpion of malachite green on the zeolite was physical process. The negative Gibbs free energy change ($\Delta$G = -3.68~-7.76 kJ/mol) and the positive enthalpy change ($\Delta$H = +26.34 kJ/mol) indicated the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption in the temperature range of 298~318 K.
Batch experiments were carried out for adsorption equilibrium, kinetics and thermodynamic parameters of the brilliant brown R onto granular activated carbon. The operating variables studied were the initial dye concentration, contact time and temperature. Experimental equilibrium adsorption data were fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm by linear regression method. The equilibrium process was well described by Freundlich isotherm model and from the determined separation factor (1/n), granular activated carbon could be employed as an effective treatment for the removal of bismarck brown R. From kinetic experiments, the adsorption processes were found to confirm the pseudo second order model with a good correlation and the adsorption rate constant ($k_2$) increased with increasing adsorption temperature. Thermodynamic parameters like the activation energy, change of Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were also calculated to predict the nature of adsorption in the temperature range of 298~318 K. The activation energy was determined as 8.73 kJ/mol for 100 mg/L. It was found that the adsorption of bismarck brown R on the granular activated carbon was physical process. The negative Gibbs free energy change (${\Delta}G$ = -2.59~-4.92 kJ/mol) and the positive enthalpy change (${\Delta}H$ = +26.34 kJ/mol) are indicative of the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption process.
Batch adsorption studies were carried out for equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic parameters for quinoline yellow adsorption by granular activated carbon ($8{\times}30mesh$, $1,578m^2/g$) with varying the operating variables like initial concentration, contact time and temperature. Equilibrium adsorption data were fitted into Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. From estimated Langmuir constant ($R_L=0.0730{\sim}0.0854$), Freundlich constant (1/n = 0.2077~0.2268), this process could be employed as effective treatment for removal of quinoline yellow. From calculated Temkin constant (B = 15.759~21.014 J/mol) and Dubinin-Radushkevich constant (E = 1.0508~1.1514 kJ/mol), this adsorption process is physical adsorption. From kinetic experiments, the adsorption process were found to confirm to the pseudo second order model with $r^2$ > 0.99 for all concentrations and temperatures. Thermodynamic parameters like activation energy, change of free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were also calculated to predict the nature adsorption. The activation energy value (+35.137 kJ/mol) and enthalpy change (35.03 kJ/mol) indicated endothermic nature of the adsorption process. Entropy change (+134.38 J/mol K) showed that increasing disorder in process. Free energy change found that the spontaneity of process increased with increasing adsorption temperature.
Biolgical activated carbon (BAC) processes are known to effectively remove organic pollutants in raw water, and biomass and attached bacterial species play an important role in removing process. In the present study, changes of bacterial biomass in granular activated carbon (GAC) process according to the depth and operating period were investigated. In addition, changes of bacterial biomass were also confirmed after UV exposure prior to the GAC process. Results from this this study showed that the bacterial biomass was decreased dependently according to the depth of GAC process. In case of UV pre-treatment, the bacterial biomass was declined significantly over the period of operation. However, changes in bacterial community were not shown during operation period without UV pre-treatment process. In conclusion, findings from this study may provide the useful information about the management of BAC process.

Adsorption performance of sulfonamide antibiotic compounds such as sulfadimethoxine(SDM), sulfachloropyridazine(SCP), sulfamethazine(SMT), sulfathiazole(STZ) and sulfamethoxazole(SMX) on granular activated carbon(GAC) was evaluated in this study. The coal-based activated carbon was found to be more effective than other carbons in adsorption of sulfonamide antibiotic compounds. The wood-based activated carbon was less effective than coconut- and coal-based carbon in adsorption nevertheless having larger pore volume and specific surface area than others carbons. The maximum adsorption capacities(X/M) of coal-based activated carbon for the five sulfonamide species was 1.3$\sim$1.5 and 1.8$\sim$2.1 times larger than coconut- and wood-based activated carbon, respectively. Carbon usage rates (CUR) of coal-, coconut- and wood-based activated carbons for SCP were 3.55 g/day, 4.29 g/day and 6.47 g/day, respectively. Similar results were obtained in the adsorption of the rest four sulfonamide species. It is concluded that coal-based activated carbon could removed the sulfonamide antibiotic compounds better than other material-based activated carbons.
