Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe and understand the meaning and the structure of subjective experiences of intensive care nurses with death of patients with do-not-resuscitate (DNR) orders. Methods: Data were collected from eight intensive care nurses at general hospitals using individual in-depth interviews and analyzed by phenomenological research method. Results: The nurses' experiences were grouped into four theme clusters: 1) ambiguity of death without correct answer, 2) a dilemma experienced at the border between death and work, 3) the weight of death that is difficult to carry and 4) death-triggered reflection of life. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop accurate judgment criteria for DNR, detailed regulations on the DNR decision process, guidelines and education on DNR patient care for nurses. It is also needed to develop an intervention program for DNR patients' families.

Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental and non- synchronized with a non-equivalent control group design. The experimental group (n=28) participated in a hospice and palliative care education program including meaning in life. The control group (n=28) participated only in a hospice and palliative care education program. The 30-hour course examined hospice and palliative nursing care and logotherapy. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire consisting of general characteristics, attitudes to end-of-life care, and meaning in life. Collected data were analyzed for frequency, percentage, ${\chi}^2$-test, and t-test using SPSS 19.0 WIN Program. Results: Scores for the attitude towards end-of-life care in the experimental group were significantly higher than in the control group. The meaning in life scores in the experimental group were significantly higher than in the control group. Conclusion: These findings suggest that the hospice and palliative care education program, including meaning in life, was effective in enhancing the attitude to end-of-life care and meaning in life among nursing students.
This study was attempted to suggest a direction for future research on good death by analyzing and synthesizing research trends on good death. For this purpose, 66 articles related to good death published in academic journals in Korea from 2011 to 2021 were analyzed based on the analysis frame of references. As a result, the year with the most good death studies was 2019 (18.2%). In the analysis by research design, 52 articles (78.8%) were the most quantitative studies, and 36 studies (54.5%) were survey studies. In the field of research, nursing studies were the most researched with 47 articles (71.2%), but multidisciplinary studies were three articles (4.5%). The subjects of the good death study were mainly the aged in the community and nursing students, each of which was 13 (19.7%), but the studies for patients were published only four articles (6.1%). The most used tool was the perception of a good death and conducted in in 38 articles (73.1%). The main research variables were the the perception of good death and hospice palliative and end-of-life care, and family support was used as mediating variables. Therefore, not only multidisciplinary research but also development research for vaious good death instruments may be suggested to comprehensively understand good death.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of life-sustaining treatment and attitudes towards advance directives among geriatric patients. Methods: The elderly participants (N=146) were recruited from a university hospital from October 30, 2012 to March 31, 2013. A questionnaire for collecting data of participants' characteristics, their experiences related to life-sustaining treatment, and attitudes towards advance directives was used. The data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 17. Results: Most participants (84.9%) were in favor of advance directives. Although most of participants wanted to receive CPR for sudden cardiac arrest (78.8%) and pain control medication (74.0%), most preferred to refuse life-sustaining treatments such as tracheostomy (96.6%) or ventilator (87.0%). Participants who had a family or acquaintances with CPR experiences (U=852.00 p=.038), had discussed with their family and acquaintances regarding end-of-life sustaining treatment (t=2.91, p=.004), or made decisions about refusing the life sustaining treatments (t=3.19, p=.002) preferred to have advance directives than those who did not. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggested the potential benefits of educational programs about advance directives for the end-of-life for geriatric patients to make decisions for life-sustaining treatments in advance.
Care for the human spirit is a core component of quality end-of-life care. Logotherapy, based on the premise that the primary motivation of human beings is to find meaning and purpose in life, can be helpful in providing care for patients, families, and loved ones in hospice care. The use of Socratic dialog in posing questions about one's life experiences, values, and attitudes is a useful method of evoking reflection. Guidance for finding meaning, even until one's last moments, can be found in the three categories: (a) tasks or deeds, (b) experiences of love and beauty, and (c) attitudes chosen in spite of a fate that cannot be changed. Self-transcendence, defined as getting outside the self for the good of others, can add meaning to life. A growing body of research concerning meaning-centered therapy is promising for improving spiritual well-being and a sense of meaning and purpose in life.
Objectives : This study aims to examine the effects of death education program on meaning in life, death anxiety and attitude toward nursing care of the dying patients among nursing students. Methods : Subjects were 155 nursing students of the K college. Before and after the intervention, students responded a questionnaire developed to measure meaning in life, death anxiety and attitude toward nursing care of the dying patients. To analyse the data, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, t-test, and paired t-test were used with an SPSS 12.0 program. Results : 1. Meaning in life and attitude toward nursing care of the dying patients levels significantly increased, death anxiety levels significantly decreased. 2. Meaning in life levels increased significantly in the 20-24 age group, female, first grade, no religion, no death experience of relatives. 3. Death anxiety levels decreased significantly in the 20-24 age group, female, no religion, no death experience of relatives, but increased significantly in a buddhist group. 4. Attitude toward nursing care of the dying patients levels increased significantly in the 20-24 age group, female, first grade, won buddhist, no death experience of relatives. Conclusions : This study, through the above result, shows that the death education program can be an effective nursing education to improve meaning in life and attitude toward nursing care of the dying patients and to decrease death anxiety. These results suggest that the death education program will be helpful for recognizing the values of themselves and their current lives and improving their nursing intervention care of the dying patients.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the meaning of death experienced by medical and nursing students through end-of-life care practice. Methods: Data were collected by in-depth interviews with twelve (six nursing and six medical) students. Conventional qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the data. Results: This findings were analyzed in three areas: 'feeling from the word of death', 'color association of death', and 'relation between life and death'. Results were three major themes and sixteen categories from the analysis. Three major themes include 'reality of uncertain death', 'have to leave, and 'new perception about death'. Sixteen categories include 'being well', 'fear', 'unknown', 'boundless', 'being with', 'out of sight', 'new start', 'go back to', 'place going by itself', 'place to meet with', 'being transformed', 'a sense of futility', 'the same point', 'a different point', 'continuous line', and 'a crossroad'. Conclusion: The findings suggest a number of themes that nursing and medical students reported about the end of life experiences that could be explored as a way of improving end of life care.
The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing resilience of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. The subject(N=118) was a systemic lupus erythematosus patient who visited the E hospital in D city. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-tset, ANOVA, pearson correlation, and multiple regression. As a result of the study, impact domain of uncertainty, fatigue, self-management domain of uncertainty, trust in doctors domain of uncertainty significant effects on resilience. Based on this study, in order to improve the resilience of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, a multifaceted approach is needed to reduce the uncertainty perceived by the patient and control fatigue. In addition, it is required to develop an effective nursing intervention program to enhance resilience reflecting influencing factors.

This study has been done for the purpose of investigating the degrees of death orientation and terminal care performance. The factors related to these two variables, and the relationship between death orientation and terminal care performance. The subjects of study were 128 nurses who implemented nursing care for terminally ill patients at C University Hospital in Kwang Ju city. The data were collected from March 13 to 19, 1996, by means of Death Orientation by Thorson Powell(1988) and Terminal Care Performance Scale by researcher. The data were analysed by t-test, ANOVA, Duncan test and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The Results of this study were summarized as follows : 1. The mean score of death orientation was 61.4. The degree of death orientation showed no significant difference depending on the general characteristics of nurses. 2. The mean score of terminal care performance was 45.5. In comparison of the degree of terminal care performance among three domains, the mean score of each item tended to show higher degrees in order of 'Psychological domain(2.4)', 'Physical domain(2.2)', 'Spiritual domain(1.9)'. 3. The degree of terminal care performance showed significant differences in age(F=11.48 p=.0001), marital status(t=10.49 p=.0015), religion(t=5.01 p=.0270), period of clinical experience(F=10.30 p=.0001) and ward unit(F=3.73 p=.0036). The degree of terminal care performance in physical domain showed significant differences in age(F=7.26 p=.0010), marital status(t=9.72 p=.0023), period of clinical experience(F=7.03 p=.0013), ward unit(F=6.23 p=.0001). The degree of terminal care performance in psychological domain showed significant differences in age(F=8.73 p=.0003), marital status(t=4.22 p=.0419), religion(t=5.59 p=.0196), period of clinical experience(F=6.36 p=.0023), ward unit(F=3.33 p=.0075). The degree of terminal care performance in spiritual domain showed significant differences in age(F=8.30 p=.0004), marital status(t=10.45 p=.0016), religion(F=5.41 p=.0216), period of clinical experience(F=8.80 p=.0003). 4. The relationship between the degrees of death orientation and terminal care performance showed no correlation(r=-.026 p=.7746).
