Data were analyzed using an independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, linear regression, and the Sobel test. The study revealed that there was a significant positive relationship between character and resilience (r=.63, p<.001) and a negative correlation with burnout (r=-.48, p<.001). Also, resilience had a partial mediating effect on character and burnout. These findings indicate that it will be more effective to develop and apply programs that promote character and resilience to reduce burnout among clinical nurses. • In this paper, we propose the importance of character education in nursing curriculum. It is quite difficult to define what character is. It is solely because a person's character is very abstract yet comprehensive at the same time. Nevertheless, the East defines character as someone's personality that he or she is naturally born with. Someone's character contains two elements: what he or she was born with, a nature, and how the person has and is to become. The nature is difficult to change through education since one is born with such disposition. However, another half of one's character can be educated to be reformed and developed in the right manner. And this specific education is called character education. Today in Korea, education to cultivate one's character has become a cause celebre, especially when evaluating a nursing department's certification. To be a good nurse, one must not only be skillful but also has the ability to help others or make ethical and clinical judgments. Yet, most nursing departments in Korea out there are overwhelmingly focused on the curriculum related to obtaining licenses and to become a registered nurse. Thus, this is to suggest alleviating such a stress and expanding the curriculum for character education.

  • This study aimed to identify the influence of caring character and knowledge of COVID-19 on interpersonal caring behavior of clinical nurses. The subjects were nurses working at one tertiary hospital in Seoul and two general hospitals in Gyeonggi province. The data were collected from October 15 to November 5, 2021. A total of 130 nurses participated in the online survey. The collected data were analyzed by performing stepwise multiple linear regression using SPSS/Win 27.0. As a result, the factors affecting the interpersonal caring behavior of clinical nurses were caring character (β=.50, p<.001), age (β=-.24, p=.002), and job satisfaction (β=.16, p=.040), and they explained 36.0% of caring behavior (F=24.49, p<.001). Therefore, it is necessary to improve caring character and job satisfaction to enhance the interpersonal caring behavior of clinical nurses. More efforts of the hospital should be made to provide caring character building education and to increase job satisfaction of clinical nurses.

This study targeted 182 fourth-year students with at least one year of clinical practice experience attending nursing departments at four universities in two regions from April 10 to May 12, 2023. Collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS/WIN 23.0 program. As a result of this study, the factor affecting the practical preparation of nursing students was found to be caring personality (β=0.72, p<0.001), the explanatory power of the variables was 51.3%(F=189.41, p<0.001). The results showed that caring personality had an effect on practical readiness. Therefore, we believe that it is necessary to develop various programs related to caring character in order to increase the practical preparation of nursing students.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a Nurse's Character Scale for Care in Clinical settings (NCS_C). Methods: The NCS_C was developed and validated as follows: Item generation, preliminary test of questionnaire, and tests of validity and reliability. One hundred and thirty six preliminary items were developed through a literature review and in-depth interviews by 10 nurse-experts and five patients. The content validity of the items was verified through an evaluation by five nurses and seven professors in the fields of Korean literature, pedagogy and nursing. Finally, 53 items were confirmed through item analysis, factor analysis and validity tests including convergent, discriminant and concurrent validities. Data were analyzed using factor analysis, Pearson correlation coefficients, and Cronbach's alpha. Results: Thirteen factors evolved from the factor analysis, which explained 63.1% of the total variance. The factors referred to the union of two dimensions: the professional dimension and the interpersonal dimension. The internal consistency, Cronbach's alpha, was .95, and reliability of the subscales ranged from .58 to .87. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the NCS_C is a reliable and valid primary scale to measure nurses' or students' character level for better care in clinical settings.
