  • In this work, nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficients(HTCs) of 5 refrigerants of differing vapor pressure are measured on horizontal low fin and Turbo-B square surfaces of 9.53 mm length. Tested refrigerants are R32, R22, R134a, R152a and R245fa and HTCs are taken from 10 $kW/m^2$ to critical heat fluxes for all refrigerant at $7^{\circ}C$. Wall and fluid temperatures are measured directly by thermocouples located underneath the test surface and in the liquid pool. Test results show that Critical heat fluxes(CHFs) of all enhanced surfaces are greatly improved as compared to that of a plain surface in all tested refrigerants. CHFs of all refrigerants on the 26 fpi low fin surface are increased up to 240% as compared to that of the plain surface. HTCs on both low fin and Turbo-B surfaces increase with heat flux. After certain heat flux, however, they decrease. CHFs of the Turbo-B enhanced surface are lower than that of the 26 fpi low fin surface. This phenomenon is due to the difference in surface structure of the low fin and Turbo-B surface.

The improvement of Thermoexcel-E surface in CHF, however, is lower than that of the low fin surface. HTCs on Thermoexcel-E surface increase with heat flux. But after certain heat flux, HTCs began to decrease due to the difficulty in bubble removal caused by the inherent complex nature of this surface. Therefore, at heat fluxes close to the critical one, sudden decrease in HTCs needs to be considered in thermal design with Thermoexcel-E surface.

  • The boiling heat transfer was experimentally investigated for the PF-5052 sprays impacting a square heated test surface in a downward direction. Full cone spray nozzles were employed for the spray cooling experiment, and experiments were made under the test conditions of Q=$3.32{\time}10^{-6}{\sim}\;12.98{\time}10^{-6}m^3/s$, ${\Delta}T_{sub}=5{\sim}25^{\circ}C$. Also, heat transfer measurements were made using the copper block of $10{\time}10mm^2$ test area heated by nine cartridge heater. From the experimental results, correlation between the Nusselt number and Reynolds number based on droplet-flow-rate was developed. The correlation shows good predictions with ${\pm}30$ % error for PF-5052.

  • In the boiling heat transfer mechanism, CHF(critical heat flux) is the significantly important parameter of the system. So, many researchers have been struggling to enhance the CHF of the system in enormous methods. Recently, there were lots of researches about enormous CHF enhancement with the nanofluids. In that, the pool boiling CHF in nanofluids has the significantly increased value compared to that in pure water because of the deposition of the nanoparticle on the heater surface in the nanofluids. The aim of this study is the comparison of the effect of the nanoparticle deposited surface and the modified surface which has the similar morphology and made by MEMS fabrication. The nanoparticle deposited surface has the complex structures in nano-micro scale. Therefore, we fabricated the surfaces which has the similar wettability and coated with the micro size post and nano structure. The experiment is performed in 3 cases : the bare surface with 0.002% water-ZnO nanofluids, the nanoparticle deposited surface with pure water and the new fabricated surface with pure water. The contact angle, a representative parameter of the wettability, of the all 3 cases has the similar value about 0 and the SEM(scanning electron microscope) images of the surfaces show the complex nano-micro structure. From the pool boiling experiment of the each case, the nanoparticle deposited surface with pure water and the fabricated surface with pure water has the almost same CHF value. In other words, the CHF enhancement of the nanoparticle deposited surface is the surface effect. It also shows that the new fabricated surface follows the nanoparticle deposited surface well.

  • The LOFT LOCE L2-3 was simulated using the RELAP5/MOD2 Cycle 36.04 code to assess its capability in predicting the thermal-hydraulic phenomena in LBLOCA of a PWR. The reactor vessel was simulated with two core channels and split downcomer modeling for a base case calculation using the frozen code. The result of the base calculation showed that the code predicted the hydraulic behavior, and the blowdown thermal response at high power region of the core reasonably and that the code had deficiencies in the critical How model during subcooled-two-phase transition period, in the CHF correlation at high mass flux and in the blowdown rewet criteria. An overprediction of coolant inventory due to the deficiencies yielded the poor prediction of reflood thermal response. Improvement of the code, RELAP5 / MOD2 Cycle 36.04, based on the sensitivity study increased the accuracy of the prediction of the rewet phenomena.

  • An experimental study on heat transfer characteristics near the critical pressure has been performed with an internally-heated vertical annular channel cooled by R-134a fluid. Two series of tests have been completed: (a) steady-state critical heat flux (CHF) and (b) heat transfer tests for pressure reduction transients through the critical pressure. In the present experimental range, the steady-state CHF decreases with the increase of the system pressure For a fixed inlet mass flux and subcooling, the CHF falls sharply at about 3.8 MPa and shows a trend toward converging to zero as the pressure approaches the critical point of 4.059 MPa. The CHF phenomenon near the critical pressure does not lead to an abrupt temperature rise of the heated wall because the CHF occurred at remarkably low power levels. In the pressure reduction transient experiments, as soon as the pressure passed through the critical pressure, the wall temperatures rise rapidly up to a very high value due to the occurrence of the departure from nucleate boiling. The wall temperature reaches a maximum at the saturation point of the outlet temperature, then tends to decrease gradually.

  • Wettability is important to enhance not only CHF but also nucleate boiling heat transfer, as shown by the results of different kinds of boiling experiments. In this regard, an excellent boiling performance (a high CHF and heat transfer performance) could be achieved in the case of pool boiling by some favorable surface modifications that can satisfy the optimized wettability condition. To determine the optimized boiling condition, we design special heaters to examine how two materials, which have different wettabilities (e.g., hydrophilic and hydrophobic materials), affect the boiling phenomena. The special heaters have hydrophobic dots on a hydrophilic surface. The contact angle of the hydrophobic surface is $120^{\circ}$ to water at the room temperature. The contact angle of the hydrophilic surface is $60^{\circ}$ at same conditions. Experiments involving micro hydrophobic dots and two types of milli hydrophobic dots are performed, and the results are compared with a reference surface.

  • Boiling heat transfer characteristic is very important in the various industries such as solar thermal system, power generation, heat exchangers, cooling of high-power electronics components and cooling of nuclear reactors. Therefore, in this study, boiling heat transfer characteristics such as critical heat flux (CHF) and heat transfer coefficient under the pool boiling state were tested using graphene nanofluids. Graphene used in this study, which have the same thermal conductivity but with different sizes. The experimental results showed that the highest the CHF and boiling heat transfer coefficient increase ratio for graphene nanofluids was at the 0.01 vol.%. At the present juncture, the CHF and boiling heat transfer coefficient increase ratio of the small-sized graphene nanofluids was higher than the large-sized graphene nanofluids.

  • In this study, the combustion characteristics of Hinoki Cypress Louver were measured after performing pressure impregnation with aqueous solution of boric acid, borax, and ammonium phosphate. The characteristics measured include ignition time, critical heat flux, and mass loss rate by incident hear flux (25, 30 and $50kW/m^2$). The samples used for the test were $100{\times}100{\times}10mm$, and the 5 min variation for each incident heat flux was measured 3 times. The results show that the ignition time for incident heat flux of $25kW/m^2$ showed a delay effect of 17.4 to 21.3% except for Type C-H. There was no significant difference at 35 and $50kW/m^2$ in the average mass loss rate in Types A-H and D-H, which had lower rates than Type N-H, which was predicted to be higher than that of Type N-H ($10.7kW/m^2$) by 38.22 to 60.46%. It is thus expected that at the time of initial primary fire, there would be a delay effect against fire spread.
