  • Integral pile shaft-column foundations are increasingly popular thanks to not only the comparative advantage of economy in constructing large cast-in-drilled-hole(CIDH) piles compared with driven piles with pile cap footings but also being free from problems associated with the critical column-footing connection. In this paper, the structural characteristics of integral pile shaft-column foundations as well as seismic analysis methodology and reinforcement details for seismic design are introduced.

  • This paper presents design safety analysis of pressure vessels. The gas pressure and thermal loads are applied to the pressure vessel simultaneously. In this study, ASME Sec. VIII Div. 2 code was accepted for the safety design of high-pressure vessel. And this result was analyzed using a coupled thermal-mechanical FEM analysis technique. The FEM computed result shows that ASME design code may not guarantee for combined loads of high gas pressure and thermal loads. And solid pressure vessel may be safe compared to other pressure vessels with supporting rings round the cylinder body.

  • Abutment-to-pile connection in an integral abutment bridge is vulnerable to lateral displacement induced by thermal movement of the superstructure. However, previous researches have merely focused on the connection. In order to improve the performance of the connection, new abutment-to-pile connection designs were proposed based on quasi-static nonlinear finite element model. The reinforcement detail specified in PennDOT DM4 and HSS tube were barely effective in controlling crack growing but spiral rebar effectively performed to delay crack growth as well as absorbing energy capacity. However, it was found that delaying cracking and strengthening the connection also caused the high lateral load in superstructures. Consequently, shape of HP pile were modified to introduce plastic hinge of the HP pile for reducing the lateral load in superstructures. Connections with modified HP pile significantly prevented crack propagations under the lateral displacement.

  • Electro-hydrostatic actuators(EHAs), which are usually composed of a direct motor-driven hydraulic pump and a cylinder, have been widely adopted as aircraft actuation systems because of their benefits in terms of improved efficiency, weight savings and the fact that they use a standalone power source. Since the recent trend in construction vehicles has been focus on energy savings in their hydraulic systems, EHAs are expected to be potential substitutes for conventional power transmission, since they are capable of energy recovery as well as highly efficient pump control. In this paper, the start and stop characteristics of EHAs were investigated through cracking pressure analysis of the pilot-operated check valve(PCV), which enables the cylinder to standstill against an external load with no holding effort from the hydraulic pump. A mathematical model that includes the load dynamics and the EHA's internal hydraulic circuit was derived for simulation with the MATLAB Simulink package. This model verified the PCV's opening and closing sequence, which in turn affects the EHA's start and stop characteristics.

  • Owing to the present problems of air pollution and fossil fuel exhaustion, ongoing research has been actively focused on developing an electric actuator system that can utilize diverse energy sources without producing any exhaust gas. Since the motors of such electric vehicles generally rotate at a high speed, the initial acceleration capability required for an automobile is insufficient. In this study, the motor output was decelerated by the transmission; the initial acceleration of the vehicle was increased, and the motor size and weight were reduced. The driving motor and transmission, which each form isolated structures, were integrated to simplify the connector for input and output. By reducing the cooling system's capacity, a vehicle was designed and manufactured that represents a structural change in effective technology.

  • A drive shaft is used to transmit torque and rotation through the connection of components of a drive train. Recently, a monobloc drive shaft without welding regions is developed to improve the safety of the drive shaft. The drive shaft bears the shear stress induced by torque. The objective of this paper is to investigate into the structural safety of a monobloc tubular drive shaft subjected to torque. Elasto-plastic finite element (FE) analysis is performed to estimate the deformation behavior of the drive shaft and stress-strain distribution in the drive shaft. Several techniques are used to create finite element (FE) model of the monobloc tubular drive shaft subjected to torque. Through the comparison of the results of FE analyses with those of experiments from the viewpoint of rotational angle, appropriate correction coefficients for different load conditions are estimated. The safety of the tubular drive shaft is examined using the results of FE analyses for different load conditions. Finally, it is noted that the designed tubular drive shaft has a sufficient structural safety.
