In this research, the effects of the gravel content on the liquefaction behavior for both of the isotropically and $K_0-anisotropically$ consolidated gravel-sand mixtures are investigated. for this purpose, the cyclic triaxial tests for the specimens with the same relative density (Dr=40%) and variations of gravel content were performed. On the other hand, a series of undrained cyclic triaxial tests were carried out on the isotropically consolidated gravel-sand mixtures with the same void ratio (e=0.7) and from 0% to 30% gravel contents. Void ratios of gravel-sand mixtures with the same relative density (Dr=40%) are found to decrease significantly with the increase of the gravel content from 0% to about 70% and increase thereafter. But the void ratio of the sand matrix among the gravel skeleton increases with the increase of the gravel contents. Test results are as follows : for the isotropically consolidated specimen with 40% of relative density and low gavel contents (GC=0%, 20%, 40%), pore water pressure development and axial strain behavior during undrained cyclic loading show similar behavior to those of the loose sand because of high void ratio, and the specimens with high gravel content (70%) both pore pressure and strata behaviors are similar to those of dense sand. And the isotropically consolidated specimens with the same void ratio (e=0.7) and higher gravel contents show the same behavior of pore water pressure and axial strain as that of the loose sand, but for the lower gravel content this behavior shows similar behavior to that of dense sand. The liquefaction strength of the isotropically consolidated specimens with the same relative density increases with gravel content up to 70%, and the strength decreases with the increase of the gravel content at the same void ratio. Thus, it is confirmed that the liquefaction strength of the gravel-sand mixtures depends both on relative density and void ratio of the whole mixture rather than the relative density of the sand matrix filled among gravels. On the other hand, the behavior of pore water pressure and axial strain for the $K_0-anisotropically$ consolidated gravel-sand mixtures shows almost the same cyclic behavior of the sand with no stress reversal even with some stress reversal of the cyclic loading. Namely, even the stress reversal of about 10% of cyclic stress amplitude, the permanent strain with small cyclic strain increases rapidly with the number of cycles, and the initial liquefaction does not occur always with less than maximum pore water pressure ratio of 1.0. The liquefaction resistance increases with the gravel contents between 0% and 40%, but tends to decrease beyond 40% of gravel content. In conclusion, the cyclic behavior of gravel-sand mixtures depends on factors such as gravel content, void ratio, relative density and consolidation condition.

Structural bracing concept equipped with a new and efficient friction based energy dissipation device is referred to Friction SliP Brace (FSB) where the behavior of the brace components is elastic until the axial resistant force in the brace exceeds the friction force developed at the frictional interface of the device. In this study, the FSB concept is modified and new type of hybrid energy dissipation device, the Active Friction SliP Braces (AFSB), is described. The FSB is by far improved in the AFSB by inclusion of an active clamping mechanism on the friction interface. The clamping action regulated by the developed algorithm is altered during the response of the building. The results indicate that the action of dissipating vibrational energy in the AFSB impacts on the response at later cycles by keeping the drift amplitudes at much lower levels, revealing overshooting problem due to its early slippage. Providing predetermined constant incremental strengths to the building by AFSB medium improves response by reducing drift amplitudes and base shear under small and medium amplitude ground accelerations.
Two types of cast-in-place concrete-filled hollow PC (HPC1, HPC2) columns were developed to reduce lifting load of heavy-weight PC columns and to improve the structural integrity of joints. To form the hollow PC columns, a couple of prefabricated PC panels was used for HPC1, and special hoops were used for HPC2. Lateral pressure of wet concrete on PC faces was measured while placing the concrete inside the columns. To evaluate the seismic resistance, full scale specimens of two HPC columns and a conventional RC column were tested under combined axial compression and lateral cyclic loading. The test results showed that the structural performance of the proposed HPC columns such as intial stiffness, maximum strength, and displacement ductility was comparable to that of the conventional RC column, but the energy dissipation of HPC2 slightly decreased after rebar-buckling. However, all the test specimens satisfied the energy dissipation requirement specified in ACI 374.
Formation used as trackbed foundation for providing vertical bearing capacity onto rail foundation are composed of crushed stones usually with certain type of grain size distribution. Permanent deformation in trackbed foundation can be generated by increasing number of load repetition due to train traffic increases, causing track irregularity. In this study, a specially prepared trackbed foundation materials (M-40) used in Korea has been tested using a large repetitive triaxial compression apparatus in order to understand resilient and permanent deformation characteristics of the material. From these test results, resilient and permanent deformation characteristic are analyzed so that a permanent deformation model is developed which can consider number of load repetition N, confining stress (${\sigma}_3$), shear stress ratio(${\tau}/{\tau}_f$) and stiffness of the material.

Three small scale hollow circular reinforced concrete columns(4.5 aspect ratio) were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial load. Diameter of section is 400 mm, hollow diameter is 200 mm. The selected test variable are transverse steel ratio. Volumetric ratio of spirals of all the columns is 0.302~0.604% in the plastic hinge region. It corresponds to 45.9~91.8% of the minimum requirement of confining steel by Korean Bridge Design Specifications, which represent existing columns not designed by the current seismic design specifications or designed by seismic concept. The final objectives of this study are to provide quantitative reference data and tendency for performance or damage assessment based on the performance levels such as cracking, yielding, steel fracture, etc. In this paper, describes mainly failure behavior, strength degradation behaviour, displacement ductility of circular reinforced concrete bridge columns with respect to test variables.
In this study, the parametric analysis for the buckling behavior of plates stiffened with the new type(${\Box}$ type) ribs was performed. Changes of the buckling capacity according to dimensions of ${\Box}$ type ribs show certain behaviors, so that the system to find the section of ${\Box}$ type ribs under the specific buckling capacity can be proposed. Applying this system to the steel deck of existing bridges, more economic sections of ${\Box}$ type ribs rather than that of closed ribs can be obtained. Therefore, the economic section of steel deck having the required buckling capacity can be designed by using the proposed system of ${\Box}$ type ribs.
Paper sludge ash, blast furnace slag, fine powder quicklime, anhydrous gypsum, and fly ash as the main ingredients were prepared to suit the salty soils of marine soils. The solidification component is a kind of recycled ceramic, and CaO plays an important role in solidification. The neutralization time after solidification was about 2 weeks, and the compressive strength was about 12N/mm2 in the mortar test after one week incubation with standard yarn. This is about 14 times stronger than the solidifying agent used in the metropolitan area. As a result of applying plate load test to saltous marine soils, we obtained the yield load that can pass the large scale even after 5 days. In the uniaxial compressive strength test, shear strength of about 300 kPa was obtained after 5 days. It will be useful for supplementing the soft ground in the area where marine reclamation is much like the Incheon area.

A study on the effect of altitude-compensation and the possibility of throttling is performed by designing an E-D nozzle that is a type of altitude-compensation nozzles. In order to examine the effect of the altitude-compensation, a CFD analysis is conducted by using three kinds (sea level, altitude at 10 km and 16 km) of the atmosphere condition while maintaining the chamber pressure. Results show that the effective nozzle exit area is also gradually increased when the altitude get increased. Understanding the possibility of throttling, a CFD analysis is conducted by moving the location of the pintle. Just as same as a general pintle thruster, the chamber pressure and thrust are increased when the nozzle throat area get decreased.

A marine helicopter should remain sufficiently upright to permit safe evacuation of all personnel with a flotation system. And the rule requires that after ditching in water, the adequate flotation time will allow the occupants to leave the rotorcraft. To this end, stability test of the emergency flotation system for Korean marine helicopter was performed by using "Froude scaling method" in water tank. Test configuration and conditions were determined in consideration of the helicopter loading condition and related specifications. Test results meet the stability requirements at sea state code 4 and sea state code 2 with puncture conditions.

An efficient method for determining forced responses of a general linear structural system in time domain using subtructure modes and Lagrange multipliers is presented. Compared with the conventional mode synthesis methods, the suggested method does not construct the equations of motion of the combined whole structure and thus the modal parameters of the whole structure are not required. Only modal parameters of each substructure and geometric compatibility conditions are needed. Both the loaded interface free-free modes and free interface modes can be employed as the modal bases of each substructure. Recurrence discrete-time state equations based upon state transition matrix are formulated for the transient analysis of a parameter-changing system. It is shown form numerical examples that the suggested method is very accurate and efficient to calculate transient responses compares with the direct numerical integration method.
