  • The purpose of this study is to explore the transition to retirement of the middle-aged in Korea according to the notion of "the career job" and "the bridge job". In order to scrutinize basic elements for the transition, three aspects such as the job history of the middle-aged, the characteristics of the demographic and economic status were investigated through the one to three wave of Korean Retirement and Income Study(KReIS). In addition, the characteristics of the career job and the bridge job were analyzed by both descriptive statistics and the conditional transition probability. Moreover, the influential factors to the job status of the middle-aged were examined by the multi-nominal logistic regression. The results of the study are as followed: first, gradual retirement is increasing in the transition to retirement of the middle-aged in Korea. Over time, the career job is decreasing whilst bridge job is increasing. However, the quality of the bridge job is poorer than the career job in terms of wage, employment status, industry, and occupation. Lastly, the middle-aged who work in the bridge job have vulnerable characteristics, so they work in the bridge job to supplement their economic needs. The results can be influential in the adjustment of the labor policies for the middle-aged in Korea. Moreover, the partial pension system could be a good alternative since the pension system is needed to protect the vulnerable situation of the middle-aged in Korea.

  • The job creation has been the most pressing issue after financial crisis in many countries around the world. Various policies for creating jobs have been implemented in order to revitalize regional economy in Korea. It has been known that the jobs have been created more in low-wage and part-time work than high-wage and full-time work. The purpose of this study is to analyze the differentiation of startups job in local labor market areas(LLMAs) in terms of job quantity as well as job quality. As the spatial unit, 121 local labor market areas which were delineated based on self-containment rate(demand and supply side of labor market) and numbers of resident workers are used. Also due to difference of the size of employment, LLMAs are classified into 3 groups: large, Medium, small LLMAs. The major results are as follows: First, the characteristics of the job creation are varied among 3 groups in terms of the quantitative and qualitative aspects. Highly waged and highly value-added jobs have been created more in large LLMAs, but full-time jobs created more in small LLMAs. Secondly, the job creation of LLMAs is somewhat weakly correlated to regional economic performance. While the quality of jobs is correlated to regional economic performance in Medium LLMAs, the quantity of jobs is significantly correlated to regional economic performance in small LLMAs. The results of this research give some implications for implementing the effective policy to create jobs related to regional economy, indicating that differentiated strategies for 3 groups of LLMAs is critically important.

  • In this paper, I investigate job creation and destruction in Korean mining and manufacturing between 1982 and 2000 using the raw data of Annual Mining and Manufacturing Survey. The rate of job creation and destruction of continuing plants averaged 9.75 and 10.33, respectively, which are higher than those of OECD countries, Chile, and Colombia. The created jobs showed weak persistence and the concentration of job reallocation is high, compared with other countries. Job reallocation accounts for major fraction of worker reallocation and the fraction has increased before 1997. Analysis of time series data of job flow revealed a general pattern of pro-cyclic job creation and counter-cyclic job destruction. However job reallocation in Korea is strongly acyclic whereas the rate is known to be counter-cyclical in the U.S.

  • With respect to the quantity, quality and social value of forest jobs, we have developed three major criteria and 11 indicators for evaluating decent forest jobs. The importance and weighted value of the criteria and indicators were investigated through a survey which was conducted on 50 experts involved in Governmental Forest Job Committee, academic and different groups of communities. The 35 experts responded to the survey chose the 'job creation potential' as the most important criterion, and they recognized the 'job quality' has a relatively higher importance than the 'social contribution'. The survey results showed that 'political will' and 'job security' have the highest weighted values among indicators while 'wage level' has the lowest value. The developed criteria and indicators are able to be used as a means of evaluating degree of decent forest jobs for both new and existing jobs.

The perception types were classified as four types: negative perception type, neutral perception type, high evaluation about quality of jobs, and employment increase perception type. The results found that views toward job transition due to Industrial 4.0 are were diverse beyond the dichotomy and institutional and educational efforts should be required to mitigate job insecurity and cope with job changes caused by technological advance.

  • This paper examines the effect of the market power of firms in the product market on job creation, job destruction and net job growth. It uses the reconstructed establishment data in the Korean Annual Mining and Manufacturing Survey between 1982 and 2002. This paper shows that job creation has continuously declined since the late 1980s and the decline is common for both market-dominant and competitive firms. The effect of market dominance on job creation is negative, controlling the firm-characteristics variables such as firm size and firm age.

  • The current study investigates the relationship and the mechanisms between bridge employment and change in marital satisfaction during midlife, using a three-wave panel dataset obtained from the Korean Baby Boomer Panel Study. A multivariate latent growth analysis reveals that the transition from career employment to bridge employment, compared to maintaining career employment, has an indirect negative effect on increase rate of marital satisfaction through the wage decrease. A steep decrease in wage following transition to bridge employment causes a lower increase in marital satisfaction. On the other hand, continuously engaging in bridge employment rather than career employment is associated with a higher increase in marital satisfaction via a higher increase in job commitment. This result implies that Baby Boomers adapt to bridge employment over time. Overall, the present study finds that the effect of bridge employment on the change in marital satisfaction during midlife varies with the duration of bridge employment. A future research needs to explore which factors can buffer the negative effect of decrease in wage during transition to the bridge employment on the change in marital satisfaction.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the types of latent profiles depending on the job satisfaction of youth entrepreneurs in South Korea and examine the influence of related variables. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was conducted using data from the 12th year of the Youth Panel Study. Results of the study revealed that there were five latent profiles based on job satisfaction among young entrepreneurs: lowest job satisfaction, mid-low job satisfaction, middle job satisfaction, mid-high job satisfaction, and highest job satisfaction. By applying multinomial logistic analysis, the influencing factors for each latent profiles have been derived. Gender, marital status, subjective health, self-esteem, entrepreneurial motivation, difficulty in start-up, person-job fit, intrinsic or extrinsic job values, business scale, income, work hour, education or training, and labor insurance were significant predictors of youth entrepreneurs' job satisfaction. Based on these results, the article discusses practical implications that can enhance the job satisfaction of young entrepreneurs.
