  • Purpose: This study has aimed to examine the relationship among self-esteem, Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and depression reported by hospitalized elderly patients with chronic diseases. Methods: A descriptive correlation study by means of a self-report questionnaire or face-to-face interview was used to collect data from 119 elderly patients who were hospitalized in a General Hospital from January 5 to February 25, 2010. Their levels of depression was measured using Short-Form Geriatric Depression Scale, self esteem using Jeon's, and activities of daily living using K-ADL. Results: 80.7% of the subjects experienced depression. Depression correlates with self-esteem (r=-.67) and ADL (r=.45). The influencing factors on depression were self-esteem, ADL, subjective health status, and family support satisfaction ($R^2=.57$), while self esteem in itself explained 45% of variance in depression. Conclusion: These findings indicate the importance of early detection of depression, which starts from the admission of patients and the continuing evaluation/management in daily life after discharge to ensure their well-being and quality of life. The development of program empowering self esteem, ADL and subjective health status with adequate family support during hospitalization and in daily life is indispensible.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of eating habits, activities of daily living and health behaviors on oral health related-quality of life in elders. Methods: The sample consisted of 246 people 65 years or older. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, average standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Scheff$\acute{e}$, Pearson Correlation Analysis and Hierarchical Multiple Regression. Results: The control variables such as gender, presence of a spouse, subjective health status, presence of chronic disease and existing number of teeth explained 14% (F=7.76, p<.001) of variance in oral health related-quality of life. The control variables, eating habits, activities of daily living and health behaviors collectively explained 20% of variance in oral health related quality of life. Conclusions: The factors that influence oral health related quality of life were presence of spouse presence factor, existing number of teeth and health behavior. Therefore, oral health related quality of life of elders requires the development of programs to boost the quality of life, and help the elderly people to maintain existing number of teeth by focusing on the variety of characteristics.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop an empowerment program as a nursing intervention for the patients having an acute stroke and to determine the effects of the program on their motivation, depression, and activities of daily living(ADLs). Methods: An non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used in this study. Sixty subjects were recruited from two separated institutions: 31 patients were allocated into experimental group and 29 were into control group. Six week empowerment program was provided to the experimental group. The study was conducted from November 2006 to March 2007. Results: After 6 week empowerment program, rehabilitation motivation was significantly increased in the experimental group in comparison to the control group(t=-2.173, p=.036). There were no significant differences in depression and ADLs between experimental and control groups. Conclusion: The empowerment program effectively increased rehabilitation motivation of patients with stroke, while did not improve the levels of depression and ADLs. Future long-term intervention may benefit the patients more in terms of depression and ADLs when considering the acute stage of the patients in this study.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the degrees of depression and activities of daily living (ADLs), and to identify factors that predict depression in elderly patients. Methods: The sample was149 patients (80% female; mean age 79.1) from three geriatric hospitals located in small cities and who agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected by staff nurses involved in direct patient care from October to September 2009. The level of depression was measured on a daily basis for seven days using a 13-item scale. Patients' ADLs was measured using a modified 10-item Bathel ADLs scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 17.0. Results: Mean depression score was $10.05{\pm}4.77$ out of 26 points and about 27% was assessed as depressed with more than 13 points. Multiple regression analysis showed that low educational level, absence of spouse and fewer family visits predict depression. In addition, low ADLs and sleep disturbance predict depression. Conclusion: Nursing care providers need to be concerned about ADLs of older patients and should develop nursing activity programs to increase their in-hospital physical activities. It is also important care for older patients' sleep and encourages family visits to decrease their depression.

Methods: The participants were 229 elders sampled from Seoul and other five provinces. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data, and data were analyzed by applying t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression with SAS 8.12. Results: There was a negative correlation between depression, MMSE-K, self-esteem, ADL, IADL, and family support. Depression and health behavior-related characteristics showed a significant difference according to stress level and the reason of stress. Major factors that affected the elders depression were self-esteem, the amount of alcohol drinking, sleeping hours, ADL and the cognition of health status, which explained 59.4%. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, self-esteem and health behavior-related characteristics including alcohol drinking, sleeping hours and ADL were the influencing factors of depression in the community-dwelling elderly. Therefore, effective psychological and physical health promotion methods need to be developed and applied in nursing interventions to prevent depression in the community-dwelling elderly.

Method: The design of this study is one-group pretest-post test design. Three self-reported questionnaires were used as follows: first, the IADL Scale developed by Lawton and Brody(1969) and revised by Suh(1996) for measuring IADL, second, the Geriatric Depression Scale developed by Sheikh and Yesavage(1986) and revised by Song(1991) for measuring depression, third, Korean Sleep Scale developed by Oh, Song, & Kim(1998) for measuring sleep aspects; fourth, the applied version of Facial Pain Scale developed by Wong & Baker(1988) and revised by Song(2004) for measuring sleep quality. Twenty-seven elderlies carried out 50 minutes of rhythmic activity program for 4 weeks. Before and after the experiment, they were tested for IADL, depression and sleep. Collected data were processed using the SPSS/WIN 12.0 program analyzed by the frequency, percentage, mean and paired t-test. Results: The improvement in IADL of the elderly was not enhanced significantly but depression and sleep disorders significantly decreased. Conclusion: Rhythmic activity program is an effective nursing intervention for the elderly.

Furthermore, this study explored factors that influence on activities of daily living. Methods: The study population was 192 stroke patients admitted in two general hospitals and two rehabilitation hospitals in M city. We collected the data using the structured questionnaires from July 11 to September 30, 2013. Results: The higher degree of social support, self-esteem, motivation for rehabilitation, the higher performance level for activities of daily living. Influencing factors of activities of daily living in the participants were motivation for rehabilitation(${\beta}$=.32, p<.001) and social support(${\beta}$=.31, p<.001). The model explained 45.9% of the variance. Conclusion: This study shows that intrinsic motivation of change in stroke patients themselves, a strong will to return to society and social supports are important factors on activities of daily living. Therefore, it is needed to develop a systemic nursing intervention improving activities of daily living in stroke patients through positive social support from patients' family members and health care providers.
