This study was to investigate basic level of physical activity test that reflects activity of daily living(ADL) for institutionalized elderly women. The subjects were 105 elderly women over than 65 years living in long-term care facilities located in Daejeon and Chungnam. The measured eight items related to ADL were tested and the data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, factors analysis and correlation. The results were statistically significant differences. Among eight test items, two factors(muscle strength and mobility) were extracted by principal component factor analysis(PCA). The two factors are appropriate domains for assessment of basic physical activity of institutionalized elderly women. By using Pearson's correlation, between two factors and age, the first principal component scores were significantly decreased with age increasing. Degradation of ADL must be prevented for institutionalized elderly women through maintain muscle strength and mobility.
The purpose of this study was to test the effects of health contract on the performance level for activity of daily living(ADL) in the hemiplegic patients. A quasi - experimental research for health contract, which was approved as an effective method of nursing intervention, was attempted to increase the performance of the hemiplegic patients' ADL. As a purpose sample, 69 hemiplegic patients hospitalized at Oriental medicine hospital of K university were taken and devided into the experimental group and the control group by means of random assignment. After Contracting with the experimental group, they were reinforced everyday for 20 minutes. The experimental group and the control group were observed and interviewed for five times at the in terval of 3~4 days by the trained nurses for this research. The data Collected through above mentioned methods were compute analyzed by t-test and ANOVA according to the purpose of this study. The data collected through above mentioned methods were computer analyzed by t-test and ANOVA according to the purposre of this study. strate increased the performance level for ADL than the Control group” was supported(t=2.96, df=52.76, p= .004). Sub Hypothesis 1,2,4,5 : “The hypothesis that the experimental group with health contract will demonstrate increased the performance level for eating(t=2.29, df=42.70, p= .027), personal hygiene and grooming (t=4.04, df=43.10, p= .000), dressing(t=3.32, df=67, p= .001) and undressing (t=3.47, df=48.44, p= .001) than the control group” was supported. Sub Hypothesis 3.6 : “The hypothesis that the experimental group with health contract will demonstrate increased the performance level for toiletting(t= .19, df=67, p= .849) and mobilization (t= .30, df=67, p= .765) than the control group” was not supported. The conclusion can be that the positive relationship between the nurse and the patient results in the desired performance level for ADL in the hemiplegic patients.
The purposes of this study was to determine the effect of exercise in stroke patients and to define to strategy to promote their activity of daily living, decrease to their depression. The experiemental design was designed nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design. The study method had been done by investigating the experimental group and control group through the questionaire on 60 patients who had been in patient department in D University hospital and K University hospital in Busan from November 5th, 2000 to the end of February 28th, 2001. Exercise was conducted by the researcher and was carried out experimental group once per day for 20 minutes for daily fourteen days. ADL check List tool by Kang and Center of Epideilogic Studies-Depression (CES-D) were used for measurement in this study. The data was analyzed by means of freqency, percentage, $mean{\pm}SD$, t-test, chi-square test and ANOVA with SPSS/PC. The results were summarized as follow; 1. The experimental group which received exercise should be higher in activity of daily living than the control group was supported (t=2.70, P=.009). 2. The experimental group which received exercise should be lower in depression than the control group was not support(t=-1.120, P=.267) but experimental group post-pre depression score support(t=7.247, P=.000). 3. Factors influencing the activity of daily living measured are payer of medical expenses (F=3.98, P=.018) and complications(t=3.97, P=.056). 4. Factors influencing the depression measured are economic status(F=5.71, P=.009) and caregivers (F=3.09, P=.045). In conclusion, the exercise incresed the activity of daily living and effect on depression of stroke patiens. Based upon these results, it is recommended that the nurses who take care of stroke patients such as exercise.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of a senior functional game (Rejuvenescent village) on cognitive function, instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), depression, and life satisfaction in Korea. Methods: An one-group pretest-posttest design was used in this study. Data were collected twice (at the beginning and the end) from 100 elderly adults in S city who played "Rejuvenescent village" 8 times (twice per week, one hour per session) for a month. Also they completed questionnaires on their cognitive function, IADL, depression, life satisfaction, and general characteristics. The data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 programs. Results: The mean age was 70.06(${\pm}3.77$) years, with a range of 65-80 years old. Among 100 subjects, 21% were male and 85% were young old. There were statistically significant differences in cognitive function (t=-3.32, p=.001), IADL (t=1.98, p=.049), and life satisfaction (t=-2.15, p=.034). Although there was no statistically significant difference in mean depression score (t=1.06, p=.292), categorized depression was statistically significant (${\chi}^2=62.97$, p<.001). Conclusion: The findings in this study show that the serious game (Rejuvenescent village) was effective for older Koreans' cognitive function, IADL, depression, and life satisfaction. Thus, we need to consider senior functional games to get health benefits by making elderly adults active with enjoyment.
Objective: To illustrate effects and application potential of Mirror Therapy (MT) for patients with post-stroke hemiplegia. Method: With reference to 9 journals (published Jan.2005-Jan.2016) on Pubmed, selected based on in/exclusion standards. Result: Simple wrist/hand movements and task-based MT were used as intervention methods to examine the effects. Tools used to assess intervention effects included upper limb functioning, Activities of Daily Living (ADL), physical condition and quality of life. Upper limb functioning turned out to have significance for ADL with higher effectiveness at the distal than the proximal region. Yet the quality of life disparity between the experiment group and the control was not found to be significant. Conclusion: We believe that research can aid clinical therapists in applying MT accordingly to individual patient characteristics. Despite prolonged difficulty in confirming efficient application due to varied protocols, development of systemized treatment protocols for maximization of MT's effectiveness remains necessary.
The purposes of this study was to determine the effect of beach ball play in stroke patients, and to define the strategy to promote their depression, powerlessness, self-esteem, activity of daily living. The experimental design was designed non-equivalent control group, non-synchroniged design. The study method had been done by investigating the experimental group and control group through the questionnaire on 57 patients who had been in patient department in D University hospital in Pusan from January 5th 1998 to the end of February 28th, 1998. Beach ball play was carried out experimental group once per day for 10 minute's for two weeks period from Jan 1998 to Feb 1998. Data was collected before and after the experimenation. Collected data was analyzed by means of frequency, percentage, chi-square test, mean, S.D, t-test with SPSS/PC. The results were summarized as follows : 1. The 1st hypothesis : "The experimental group which received the beach ball play should be higher in depression than the control group" was supported(t=3.11, p=.003). 2. The 2nd hypothesis : "The experimental group which received the beach hall play should be higher in powerlessness than the control group" was supported(t=3.32, p=.002). 3. The 3rd hypothesis : "The experimental group which received the beach ball play should be higher in self-esteem than the control group" was not supported(t=-1.90, p=.064). 4. The 4th hypothesis : "The experimental group which received the beach ball play should be higher in activity of daily living than the control group" was not supported(t=-.47, p=.637). In conclusion, the patients who received beach ball play showed the increase in the degree of depression and powerlessness of stroke patients. So the beach ball play had been judged the nursing intervention to improve their emotional problem in stroke patients.
Purpose: The purpose of this study were to describe the level of activities of daily living (ADLs) and fatigue of stroke patients and to identify related factors of ADLs and fatigue. Method: A sample of 132 were used who were recovering from stroke. The face-to-face interviews were conducted to collect data. The levels of ADLs and fatigue were evaluated using the Modified Barthel Index and Kim's fatigue scale respectively. A series of t-test and analysis of variance analyses were conducted to examine study purposes using SPSS 15.0. Results: The levels of fatigue and ADLs were 65.6 (SD=16.52) and 74.6 (SD=22.32) respectively. Significantly poorer ADLs were found: women (t=2.05, p=.001), older people aged ${\geq}$ 70 years (F=2.74, p=.046), the duration of onset (F=4.34, p=.006), the use of assist devices (F=35.64, p<.001), the parts of paralysis (F=4.25, p=.007), the time to attack (F=3.34, p=.039), and accompanying symptoms (F=15.23, p<.001). There was a significant difference in fatigue with patients with lower accompanying symptoms having lower fatigue (F=11.08, p<.001). Conclusion: These findings suggest gender, the duration from onset, the use of assist device, the parts of paralysis, the time to attack and accompanying symptoms were significant factors of the ADLs and fatigue post stroke. These factors should be considered when developing and testing nursing intervention programs for stroke survivors.
Stroke patients have increased with the overall aging of our population, 60 years and older. Recently the number of stroke patients has been on the increase even among younger people in their thirties. The family support is frequently mentioned as a major variable which plays an important role in helping the patients adapt themselves to their hemiplegic situations. The purpose of the study was to examine between family support and activities of daily living(ADLs)abilities for the hemiplegic patients, and to provide the basic data to help the patients carry out their ADLs on their own. The sample for the study included 106 hemiplegic patients and their family members. The data were collected using a focused, structured interviews. The major findings of the study were as follows: 1. The hemiplegic patients perceived that their family supports were very high(Mean, 49.00). 2. The degree of family support was significantly higher in female. high economic status, and non-use of brace patients than in male, poor economic status, use of brace patients. 3. The ADL abilities of the hemiplegic patients were significantly higher in ambulatory, younger, and longer-period-of-illness patients and patients who used a cane as a assistive device. 4. The family support for the hemiplegic patients showed a statistically significant Cor relationship with their performance of ADL(r=.30809. p=0.0013). 5. The performance of ADL for the ambulatory patients were mainly affected by the degree of family support, the period of the hemiplegic illness, the use of brace, informal care giving, and the age. These variables explained 50% of variance. 6. The length of illness was a statistically significant affecting variable for ADL performance in OPD and assistive device in IPD. In conclusion, the higher the hemiplegic patients perceived the degree of family support, the better they performed ADL. We should develop nursing methods which enhance the family support for the hemiplegic patients in order to increase their performance of ADL.
