The purpose of this research is particle shape evaluation of granular soil and aggregate using Digital Image Process(DIP). DIP is very useful to measure the roughness and particle shape of aggregates. Couple of aggregates, like standard sand, two different crushed stones, and two different marine aggregates, have been employed. Shape factor of two different marine aggregates is ranged 0.35 to 0.54. Crushed stone I is that of 0.74 which is highly flat, but standard sand is elongated shape. Especially, two marine aggregate showed a big difference of width and length which meaned a long shape. There is any significant difference of elongation ratio and flakiness for each aggregate with different measuring system, like direct measurement of vernier calipers and DIP method. Within the limited test results, DIP is one of useful to get the particle shape of aggregate with limitation of measuring errors and to apply the particle distribution curve.

Surface of fine-size exposed aggregate Portland cement concrete pavements is consists of exposed coarse aggregate by removing upper 2~3mm mortar of concrete slab. Fine-size exposed aggregate PCC pavements have advantages of maintaining low-noise and adequate skid-resistance level during the performance period. In order to provide the successful exposed concrete aggregate pavement, uniform distribution of the coarse aggregate on pavement surface through adequate the mix design and exposing method. In this study, evaluated initial performance of fine-size exposed aggregate PCC pavement by experimental construction. And it was known that fine-size exposed aggregate concrete pavement which can reduce the noise and maintain the adequate level of skid resistance and strength.
In Korea, the production of reclaimed concrete materials has been increased due to the increase in the concrete structures taken down every year. The reclaimed concrete materials have been reused as road materials. However, the studies on their mechanical and environmental properties have been very limited. The recycled rate of the materials is currently low in Korea. This paper presents the investigation of mechanical and environmental properties of the reclaimed concrete materials, as well as the comparisons with those of gravel. For the evaluation of the mechanical and environmental characteristics, following tests were conducted on both reclamed materials and gravel; liquid limit, plasticity index, CBR, sand equivalent test, abrasion test, pH test, and column leaching test. The test results showed that the reclaimed concretes satisfy the requirements for use as roadbase, subbase, and subgrade materials, except base materials. The pH of reclaimed concrete materials was less than 11 and the leaching test results satisfied the regulatory requirement of Waste Management Act in Korea. Based on the investigations, it appears that the reclaimed concrete materials are environmentally safe and applicable for use as road materials.

Ultra-high strength concrete becomes one of the main research areas because recently concrete structure is larger. The quality of aggregate (ultra-high strength and uniformity) as well as chemical admixture and mineral additives is a key factor for ultra-high strength concrete development. However, natural aggregate including crushed aggregate is inappropriate for ultra-high strength concrete because ultra-high strength quality cannot be maintained uniformly over whole natural aggregate lot. In this study ceramic aggregate was applied for ultra-high strength concrete in order to assure uniform quality of ultra-high strength aggregate. Ultra-high strength concrete was achieved by applying coated ultra-high strength ceramic aggregate to enhance the bonding strength between aggregate and cement paste. Also for actual application light weight ceramic aggregate(density 2.2 $g/cm^3$) with zero water absorption was tested.

Lightweight aggregate which is composed of sintered polycrystalline materials usually has a certain portion of pores inside of it. Because of such a structural characteristics, it tends to that movement of water in aggregate shows an abnormal behavior against the change of outside environment. In general, water movement behavior is controlled by porosity, distribution of pore size; however, dense surface layer will also affect water movement behavior in case of artificially sintered aggregates. Factors affecting water movement behavior in the aggregate are pore distribution, pore shape, pre-wetting method, etc. In this study, absorption characteristics of aggregate under the pressure and absorption rate according to water dipping time are analyzed for the basis of pressure pumping of lightweight concrete. Two kinds of aggregates were used for the test: one is made by 'L' company in Germany and the other is of our own made at the pilot plant in Kyonggi University. Absorption rate of aggregate is measured according to water dipping time, vacuum pressure, and quenching condition. Absorption rate of aggregate with $300^{\circ}C$ quenching is higher than that of aggregate with 24 hr water dipping. Generally the more vacuum the higher water absorption rate. Water absorption rate of 'L' aggregate under -300 mmHg is 54 % higher than that of aggregate with 24 hr water dipping; however, only 2 % increase in water absorption was measured for the K622 and K73 which were of our own.

With the increase of decrepit facilities, construction waste increased to a certain level and now the increase is more or less stabilized. Yet construction waste still constitutes the largest portion of the overall wastes. Also, it is inevitable to spend a huge amount of the national budget due to the aggravating shortage of aggregate caused by prohibition on collection of natural aggregates as well as due to the damage to the land and environment caused by development of the sources of aggregates. As a countermeasure to the situation, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport promulgated the quality standard for recycled aggregate to manage the usage of recycled aggregate according to its quality. But use of recycled aggregate for the purpose of high added value still remains nominal. Therefore, this research aims to study the applicability of recycled aggregate concrete as structural concrete by evaluating the quality improvement effects and the performance of the recycled aggregate concrete including recycled fine aggregate and recycled coarse aggregate that have undergone carbonation for 4 days and 14 days respectively in the condition of 60% RH, 20% $CO_2$ and $20^{\circ}C$ temperature, suggested for carbonation modifying from the advance research. The result shows carbonation modify contributed to quality improvement with 0.91% decrease in absorption rate for recycled fine aggregate and 0.7% decrease in absorption rate for recycled coarse aggregate. The physical properties and durability of the recycled aggregate made of aggregate modified by carbonation showed results similar to general concrete, which confirmed the possibility of applying the recycled aggregate made of recycled aggregate modified by carbonation to structural concrete.
A method for lmprovlng strengths of recycled concrete was studied to make use of it in nolmal
concrete structures. Recycled conc~ete was prepared by replacing 50% by weight of coarse aggregate with recycled aggregate. Mix design rnet hod for crushed aggregates was used and specirriens were cured by normal moisture curing method. A plastlciser and a fly ash were added to the mix to improve performance of recycled concrete. Compressive strength, flexural strength,
tensile strength, elastic modulus, stress-strain relationship, long-term compressive strength and fracture toughness were evaluated and compared with those of rlormal concretes. Recycled concrete showed, in general, lower compressive strength than normal concreks. It also showed lower elastic modulus, lower tensile and flexural strengths, and higher strain under the same stress
level. However, by reducing w /c ratio down to 35% using the plasticiser. average compressive strength(${\alpha}_{28}$) of recycled concrete was reached. with slump of $16{\pm}2$cm, to $225kg/cm^2$ or hlgher,
which is an acceptable strmgth level for normal structural concrete. I-Iowevei., elastic modulus
and strain should be improved further for practical use of recycled concrctc: in normal structure.
Fly ash addition in both concretes showed an effect of irnprovilig long term compressive strength
and reducing strengths.

Recently, the use of recycled aggregates from construction waste has been introduced as a solution for environmental problems and aggregate shortage. In spite of the various methods to promote recycling of recycled aggregate, the use of recycled aggregate as the structural aggregate has been limited because the quality of recycled aggregate(especially recycled fine aggregate) has been considered lower than that of natural aggregate. In this work, recycled fine aggregate was immersed for an hour in acrylic resin solutions of various concentrations to improve its quality, the appropriate immersion concentration was selected by measuring the absorption capacity and skeletal density of the recycled fine aggregate, and mortar specimens were prepared to evaluate the mechanical performance in order to propose a applicable treatment process to promote the use of recycled fine aggregate. According to the experimental results, as the acrylic resin concentration increased, the absorption capacity and skeletal density of the recycled fine aggregate decreased. The absorption capacity was lowest at acrylic resin concentrations around 6 to 8 %. However, among mortar specimens made of recycled fine aggregate immersed in acrylic resin solution, the compressive strength was the highest at 4 % acrylic resin concentration, suggesting that the use of higher concentration acrylic resin solution can actually lower the compressive strength of mortar.

It is very important to experimentally evaluate concrete behavior at elevated temperature because aggregates make up approximately 80 percent of volume in concrete. In this study, an experiment to evaluate mechanical properties of normal weight and light weight concrete of 60 MPa was conducted. Based on loading level of 0, 20 and 40 percent, the tests of 28 days compressive strength, elastic modulus, thermal strain, total strain, and transient creep using ${\phi}100{\times}200mm$ cylindrical specimens at elevated temperature were performed. Then, the results were compared with CEB (Committes Euro-international du Beton) model code. The results showed that thermal strain of light weight concrete was smaller than normal weight concrete. Also, the results showed that compressive strength of light concrete at $700^{\circ}C$ was higher than normal weight concrete and CEB code, similar to that obtained at ambient temperature. Transient creep developed from loading at a critical temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ caused the concrete strains to change from expansion to compression. The transient creep test result showed that internal force was high when the ratio of shrinkage between concrete and aggregate was more influential than thermal expansion.
