The railway system has been recognized as one of the best eco-friendly advanced transportation systems. Furthermore, the improvement of the passenger transportation quality and the energy saving have been studied for being the most competitive transportation system. However, most of the studies have been mainly focused on the improvement of the transportation efficiency and energy saving because of the characteristics of the urban railway which serves the unspecified multiple passengers. In this paper, the 3-dimensional vibratory lateral acceleration has been measured in various environments for the automatic and manual operation modes of the general train and express train in the urban railway lines. In terms of the improvement of the passenger transportation quality, the comparison analysis of the ride quality is carried out based on the measured 3-dimensional vibratory lateral acceleration and the statistical techniques of UIC513R suggested by the International Union of Railways.

This paper presents the analysis of the current as stray current and supplied current of the substation, on the DC railway power system. In DC railway power supply system, the running rails are usually used as the return conductor(negative-polarity) for traction load current. This condition mainly focuses on economic considerations, since it does not require the installation of an additional return conductor. But, problems of low resistance between the running rails for the return conductor and earth allows a significant part of the return load current to leak into the earth. This current is normally called to as leakage or stary current. This stary currents creates serious problems for any electrified matter in the underground. Therefore, reduction of stray current of the DC railway power supply system is also of direct benefit to the operational and safety aspects of the DC railway systems. In this paper, deal with the analysis of the current distribution on the DC railway power system applied the common grounding system, using SPLIT of CDEGS program.
The feasibility of soil washing was investigated in the laboratory to treat heavy metals-contaminated railway soil. Various organic acids including ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and citric acid as well as inorganic acids such as hydrochloric acid (HCl) and phosphoric acid were tested to evaluate washing efficiency. Generally, inorganic acid showed higher removal efficiency compared to organic acids. Specially, EDTA, which are well known as most effective washing agent to remove heavy metals from soil, was not efficient to remove heavy metals in this study. Among washing agents tested in this study, HCl was most effective. The removal of Cd, Cu, and Pb was high, however, that for Zn and Ni was less than 30% with 0.5 M HCl. This difference comes from analytical methods (Korean Standard Test Method for Soil). Aqua regia was used to extract Zn and Ni, however 0.1 N HCl was used for other metals. As a result, simple washing technology is not effective, to treat railway contaminated soil with heavy metals.
This study investigates the diurnal pattern of transit ridership in the Metropolitan Seoul area. For the purpose, we use a weekday Smart Card passenger transaction data in 2005. Eleven passenger trip patterns are found from 2.74 million passengers moving on the Metropolitan Seoul Metro system. Among them, we analyze 2.4 million passengers blonging to five trip types having only one or two transaction record during a day. A total of 357 metro stations are classified to four types according to their diurnal pattern of passenger riderships. We analyze the relationships between passenger's trip chain patterns and subway station's diurnal transit ridership patterns. The result shows that the ratio of the number of passengers of particular time of the day is hierarchically related with trip chain patterns.
Concrete structures become more common in railway systems with an advancement of high speed train technologies. As the service life of concrete structures increases, structural strengthening for concrete structures may be necessary. There are several typical strengthening techniques using steel plate and fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials, which have their own inherent shortcomings. In order to enhance greater durability and resistance to fire and other environmental attacks, basalt fiber material attracts engineer's attention due to its characteristics. This study investigates bonding performance of basalt fiber sheet as a structural strengthening material. Experimental variables include bond width, length and number of layer. From the bonding tests, there were three different types of bonding failure modes: debonding, rupture and rip-off. Among the variables, bond width indicated more significant effect on bonding characteristics. In addition the bond length did not contribute to bond strength in proportion to the bond length. Hence this study evaluated effective bond length and effective bond strength. The effective bond strength was compared to those suggested by other researches which used different types of FRP strengthening materials such as carbon FRP.
An important source of noise from railways is rolling noise caused by wheel and rail vibrations induced by acoustic roughness at the wheel-rail contact. In conventional approaches to predicting rail noise, the rail is regarded as placed in a free space so that the reflection from the ground is not included. However, in order to predict rail noise close to the rail, the effect of the ground should be contained in the analysis. In this study the rail noise reflected from the ground is investigated using the wavenumber domain finite element and boundary element methods. First, two rail models, one using rail attached to the rigid ground and one using rail located above rigid ground, are considered and examined to determine the rigid ground effect in terms of the radiation efficiency. From this analysis, it was found that the two models give considerably different results, so that the distance between the rail and the ground is an important factor. Second, an impedance condition was set for the ground and the effect of the ground impedance on the rail noise was evaluated for the two rail models.
It has been built or remodeled in every year train maintenance centers including subways. However, there is no standard to measure exact capacity. In today, most of criteria is referenced on Japanese. In general, we can standardize the process for 'Train Overhaul Maintenance' because its processes are similar or same patterns. The processes can be the base standard of train maintenance after being classified in detail and validating it. This study is adapt BPR methodology to present standardizes processes and the processes are mapping to layout drawing to constraint from the real world, and then evaluate the capacity using simulation. To guarantee objectivity of input data, we use research data by the National Railroad Administration and Association of Japanese Railway Engineering. Using these data to simulation, we compare to the 'Allowances' and evaluate its adequacy.
It is generally not preferable to install a turnout on a sharp curves but it is not desirable for the safety of a train. However, in a mountainous area or a depot where a sufficient space can not be secured to secure a straight line. In this study, in order to analyze the cause of train derailment accident that occurred in the place where turnout is installed in a sharp curves, we performed derailment analysis using line data and accident vehicle data measured at the location where the accident occurred. This derailment coefficient maximum turnout at the start of the track and derailment curve analysis showed that even big enough to cause a derailment as 1.37 in size, which was found to be consistent with the actual site survey results derailment occurred.

In the railway, the delay of a train may affect the schedule of other trains. Hence, the timetable management activity involving overtaking and transferring becomes an important issue. The timetable rescheduling is the conflict resolution of the disrupted schedule and a matter of deciding the sequence of moves among trains and the place for meeting. In Korea, there are few cases where operations research models were applied to railway timetable rescheduling problem in consideration of the transfer between Korea Train eXpress (KTX) trains and conventional trains. Hence, we present a mathematical approach that can minimize the total delay of the whole trains secondly. We applied the model to the exemplary section of a double-line track, the Gyung-Boo Line, and it is confirmed that the mathematical model could effectively address the transfer service as well as the complicated railway conflicts of Gyung-Boo Line.

In this study, the relationship between the track support stiffness and the track impact factor for a sleeper floating track and a turnout system with wood ties currently employed in Korean urban transit was assessed by performing field tests using actual vehicles running along the service lines. Field tests were performed on four track systems (i.e., sleeper floating track, and point, lead and crossing sections of turnout system). The theoretically designed track impact factor and track support stiffness were compared with the corresponding track impact factor and track support stiffness measured through field tests for the target tracks on the service line. The track impact factor for the service line appeared to increase with the deviation of track support stiffness according to vehicle driving direction; therefore, it was inferred that the deviation of track support stiffness between each track section directly affected the track impact factor.
