  • Until recently tensile stresses in concrete have not been considered, since it does not affect the ultimate strength of reinforced concrete flexural members significantly However, to verify the load-deflection relationship, the effect of tensile stresses between reinforcing bars and concrete, so-called tension stiffening effect must be taken into account. Main parameters of the tension stiffening behavior are known as concrete strength, and bond between concrete and reinforcing bars. In this study total twenty specimens subjected to bending were tested with different concrete strength, coverage, and de-bonding length of longitudinal bars. The effects of these parameters on the flexural rigidity, crack initiation and propagation were carefully checked and analyzed.

  • Tensile behavior in concrete has been neglected until recently. However, the effect of tensile stresses in concrete must be considered where the member primarily carries tensile forces or when ultimate strength is affected by the cracking history. In this paper, a series of experiments were performed with a reinforced rectangular beams of 15 specimens in order to investigate the effect of tension stiffening into the nonlinear analysis and cracking behavior. The experimental results were analyzed in terms of load-deflection curves and strain fracture energy with respect to the main experimental variables such as types of specimen, strength of concrete and steel ration. The results from experiments and finite element analysis were compared in terms of load-deflection relationship and cracking pattern. The results are as follows ; The tension stffening effects of reinforced concrete beams were observedc up to yielding of members after cracking showing strain energy difference of 35 % at the beam of 0.57% steel ratio compared with that of beam ignoring the tension stiffening effect. The tension stiffening of concrete strength 400kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 600kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ increased by 8% and 13%, respectively, compared with that of concrete strength 200kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The tension stiffening effects were greater at a ductile member rather than a brittle one. The load-deflection results of finite element analysis showed very similar results from experiment. The crack growth and pattern might be predicted from the nonlinear finite element analysis considering concrete stiffening.

  • The end plate connection is applied to beam-column moment connections in various forms. Such end plate connection displays changes in the behavioral characteristics, strength and stiffness, and energy dissipation capacity based on the thickness and length of the end plate, the number and diameter of the high strength bolt, the gauge distance of the high strength bolt, prying action force of the high strength bolt, and dimensions and length of the welds. Accordingly, this study has apprehended the axial tensile stiffness and prying action force of the high strength bolt connected on the tensile side based on the difference in thickness of the end plate, and was conducted to propose an analysis model for the prediction of such variables that affect the operating properties of the end plate. To achieve this, this study has conducted a three-dimensional non-linear finite-element analysis of the unstiffened expanding end plate connection by selecting only the thickness of the end plate as the variable.

  • In this study, material nonlinear finite element program is developed to analyze reinforced concrete shell of arbitrary geometry considering tension stiffening effects. This study is capable of tracing the load-deformation response and crack propagation, as well as determining the internal concrete and steel stresses through the elastic, inelastic and ultimate ranges in one continuous computer analysis. The cracked shear retention factor is introduced to estimate the effective shear modulus including aggregate interlock and dowel action. The concrete is assumed to be brittle in tension and elasto-plastic in compression. The Drucker-Prager yield criterion and the associated flow rule are adopted to govern the plastic behavior of the concrete. The reinforcing bars are considered as a steel layer of equivalent thickness. A layered isoparametric flat finite element considering the coupling effect between the in-plane and the bending action was developed. Mindlin plate theory taking account of transverse shear deformation was used. An incremental tangential stiffness method is used to obtain a numerical solution. Numerical examples about reinforced concrete shell are presented. Validity of this method is studied by comparing with the experimential results of Hedgren and the numerical analysis of Lin.

  • In urban area, many design projects related to geotechnical projects are controlled by serviceability rather than stability requirements. Accordingly, control of ground deformation has become more crucial and many researchers have studied soil stiffness. Recent experimental studies on the stress-strain response of Chicago glacial clays showed that the nonlinearity and anisotropy are the two key factors in evaluating the soil stiffness. In this study, experimental results are applied to analyze the deep excavation site locating in downtown Chicago. The stress paths observed from the observation points located behind and front of the supporting wall yield typical stress paths. Changes in soil stiffness nonlinearity and anisotropy were discussed by comparing experimental and computed stress paths. The stiffness anisotropy were significant even at the first few excavations. The stiffness degradation characteristics are significantly different according to relative location to the support wall even at the same elevation.

  • Experimental research was performed on the 6m-6m two-span, continuous composite beams. Background research for the crack width control of continuous composite bridges in the Eurocode-4 is reviewed and equationsfor the calculation of crack width considering tension stiffening are presented. The behavior of the continuous composite beams was investigated using the initial and stabilized cracking process of the concrete slab in tension. Test results showed that the current requirement of minimum reinforcement for ductility in Korea Highway Bridge Design Codes could be reduced. The flexural stiffness of cracked continuous composite beams can be evaluated by the uncracked section analysis until the stabilized cracking stage. An empirical equation for the relationship between the stress of tensile reinforcements and crack width was obtained from the test results.

  • This study demonstrated that a slag, an industrial solid waste, can be used as a structural reinforcement. The mechanical properties(tensile strength and Elastic modulus) of slag reinforced composite(SRC) was investigated as functions of slag particle size (8~12 ${\mu}m$ and 12~16 ${\mu}m$) and volume fraction (0-40 vol.%). In order to investigate the interface and a degree of particle dispersion which have an effect on mechanical properties, optical microscopic images were taken. The results of tensile tests showed that the tensile strength decreased with an increase in slag volume fraction and particle size. The elastic modulus increased with an increase in slag volume fraction and particle size except for 30 vol.% SRC. The tensile strength decreased with an increase in slag particle size. The microscopic picture showed SRC has fine degree of particle dispersion at low slag volume fraction. SRC has a good interface at every volume fraction. However particle cluster was incorporated with an increase in slag volume fraction.

  • The structural behaviour of concrete beam was examined by the three points bending test after the completion of the electrochemical chloride extraction (ECE), rather than bond strength mostly measured in previous studies. It was found that the flexural rigidity of concrete was lowered by the ECE, but the strength was enhanced in terms of the maximum load. The flexural rigidity, in the linear elastic range, was reduced by the loss of effective cross-section area. In fact, the inertia moment was substantially subjected to 70 % loss of the cross-section by the tensile strain at the condition of the failure. However, a lower rate of the inertia moment reduction was achieved by the ECE, implying the higher resistance to the cracking, but the higher risk of deformation.
