Hopkinson's effect tests were carried out for various strain rates on three different types of rock in both saturated and dry states in order to examine the effects of strain rate and water saturation on tensile strength. The tensile strength increased with the increase of the strain rate not only in dry state but also in saturated state. It was also especially recognizable that the dynamic tensile strength of rock in the dry state was proportional to approximately a one-third multiple of strain rate no matter what the type of rock. It was found that water saturation decreased tensile strength in the dry state of sandstone and tuff, both with high porosity, but no significant difference could be recognized between the dry and the saturated states of granite, which has a low porosity of 0.49%.

The purpose of this study was to experimentally investigate the effects of curing methods on the compressive strength and tensile behavior of alkali-activated slag-based fiber-reinforced composite with a water-to-binder ratio of 15%. Three kinds of mixtures according to the curing conditions were prepared and compressive strength and tension tests were performed. Test results showed that the compressive strength and the first cracking strength of composites decreased when high temperature curing and air curing were adopted, while tensile strain capacity of composites increased. It was also observed that crack spacing and crack width of composites decreased by applying high temperature and air curing.
The characteristics of tensile strength of fiber-reinforced grouting (cement paste) injected into rocks or soils were studied. A tensile strength of such materials utilized in civil engineering has been commonly tested by an indirect splitting tensile test (Brazilian test). In this study, a direct tensile testing method was developed with built-in cylinder inside a cylindrical specimen with 15 cm in diameter and 30 cm in height. The testing specimen was prepared with 0%, 0.5%, or 1% (by weight) of a PVA or steel fiber reinforced mortar. A specimen with 5 cm in diameter and 10 cm in height was also prepared and tested for the splitting tensile test. Each specimen was air cured for 7 days or 28 days before testing. The tensile strength of built-in cylinder test showed 96%-290% higher than that of splitting tensile test. The 3D finite element analyses on these tensile tests showed that the tensile strength from built-in cylinder test had was 3 times higher than that of splitting tensile test. It is similar to experimental result. As an amount of fiber increased from 0% to 1%, its tensile strength increased by 119%-190% or 23%-131% for 7 days or 28 days-cured specimens, respectively. As a curing period increased from 7 days to 28 days, its strength decreased. Most specimens reinforced with PVA fiber showed tensile strength 14%-38% higher than that of steel fiber reinforced specimens.
In this study, Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber was used to increase strength (unconfined compressive strength and tensile strength) of bio-cemented sand using microorganism. Ottawa sand was mixed with PVA fibers having three fiber contents (0, 0.4, and 0.8%). The fiber mixed sand was treated 14 times by using Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) which included culture (2 times per day) during 7 days to improve its engineering properties. The Bacillus Sporosarcina pasteurrii (Bacillus sp.) was used for urease activity. The specimen was prepared as a cylindrical specimen of 5 cm in diameter and 10 cm in height. Unconfined compressive strength and tensile strength were measured after cementation. Moreover, calcium carbonate content and SEM analyses were performed with a piece of sample. An average value of unconfined compressive strength increased and then slightly decreased but an average value of tensile strength ratio increased with increasing carbonate content the in same condition. Unconfined compressive strength and tensile strength increased about 30% and 160%, respectively. A strength ratio of unconfined compressive strength to tensile strength representing the brittleness decreased from 8 to 4 when fiber content increased from 0.0 to 0.8%. Such bio-cemented sand can be applied into slope area to prevent its shear failure or increase its tensile strength.

Laboratory and meta-analyses were done for 9% NI Steel for use in a liquefied natural gas carrier. The meta-analysis is based on a previous study. The laboratory analysis examines the effects of a single pass and multiple passes on the tensile strength through an impulse-response test. The tensile strength increased from pass one to pass three and decreased from pass four to pass ten. The pass and multi-pass welding had a positive effect on the tensile strength. Lastly, the welding and tensile time had a positive effect on the tensile strength.
The main object of this paper is to investigate the effects of high temperatures on the physical and mechanical properties of natural sand concrete(NSC) and crushed sand concrete(CSC). Test samples were exposed to high temperature ranging from $200^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$. After exposure, various tests were conducted. Color image analysis and weight losses were determined and compressive strength test and splitting tensile strength test were conducted. The results indicated that weight losses increased as exposure temperature increased with comparable decreasing rate. The results also showed that compressive strength and splitting tensile strength and modulus of elasticity decreased as exposure temperature increased. The results also showed that residual compressive strength of NSC decreased more drastically than that of CSC at $200^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$. Residual splitting tensile strength of NSC decreased more than that of CSC at $200^{\circ}C$, while NSC and CSC showed comparable residual strength ratio at $800^{\circ}C$.
In this paper, to investigate the influence of installation damage, a variety of full-scale field installation tests with 15 geosynthetics reinforcements and fill materials of various grain size distribution have been performed. The full-scale field installation test was conducted with reference to the FHWA (2009) guidelines. The tensile strength tests were performed by sampling up to 20 specimens randomly from the excavated geosynthetics reinforcements after compaction of fill material, and the degree of decrease in tensile strength of reinforcements due to compaction was analyzed based on the experiment results. It was found that the degree of tensile strength reduction of geosynthetics reinforcements due to the compaction of fill material is greatly influenced by the type of reinforcement and the maximum diameter of fill material. In addition, it was found that the strength reduction ratio of PET geogrid (PVC coating) with relatively small stiffness was greatest, and that the larger the maximum grain size of the fill material, the greater the strength reduction ratio. And also, a more reasonable evaluation method for the installation damage reduction factor of geosynthetics reinforcements is proposed based on the results of full-scale field installation tests in present study and the existing test results.
At low normal stress levels, tensile strength of sand characteristically varies with either saturation or suction of soil in an up-and-down manner with a peak tensile strength that can occur at any degree of saturation. A theory that accurately predicts tensile strength of wet sand was presented in the previous study. In this study, the results of uniaxial tensile, suction-saturation and direct shear tests obtained from three sands (Esperance sand from Seattle, Washington, clean sand from Perth, Australia, and Ottawa sand) are used to validate the proposed theory. The closed form expression of the proposed theory can predict well the experimental data obtained from these sands in terms of the variation patterns of tensile strength over the entire saturation regimes, the magnitude of the tensile strength, its peak value, and the corresponding degree of saturation when the peak strength occurs.
In this study, a series of accelerated creep tests (SIM) was carried out on geosynthetic strip reinforcements with folding grooves having different tensile strengths (15 kN, 25 kN, 35 kN, 50 kN, 70 kN, and 90 kN) to analyze creep characteristics and to assess creep reduction factors. In particular, long-term creep tests were conducted on geosynthetic strip reinforcements with 25 kN tensile strength, which is widely used, to compare and analyze the accelerated creep test results. As a result, the creep reduction factor increased with an increasing design life of reinforcement. In addition, geosynthetic strip reinforcement using the same material and manufacturing method showed similar creep reduction factors at the same design life for different tensile strengths. When both long-term and accelerated creep test data were used, the creep reduction factors from the accelerated test were estimated to be 5.9%~7.1% less than those from the long-term creep test for the design life ranging from 50 to 100 years.
