  • Learning at the elbow of scientist is a well-known educational approach to improve students' understanding of science and scientific practice. This study, in the perspective of legitimate peripheral participation in a community of practice, explores how students' scientific practice and perception could be shifted through R&E program with the development of participation. Data from participant observation for 18 months and in-depth interviews were analyzed based on constant comparative method to extract common characteristics of students' participation and major shifts in their scientific practices and perceptions. Students' development of participation was categorized into three stages: legitimate, peripheral, and full participation. In the stage of peripheral participation, students perceived themselves as mere students and showed passive engagement. They just followed the directions of researchers and didn't know what they should be doing. But through continuous participation, students showed enhanced engagement like voluntary article reading, role assignments, and establishing norms in a community of practice with the reference of scientists'. In this stage of transitional participation, students also showed a deepened perception on everyday life of scientist and the community of scientist. And finally in the stage of full participation, students showed responsibility and ownership on research and continuous efforts to refine their research. They recognized themselves as beginning scientists. With these findings, this paper highlighted the dynamic processes of students' development of scientific practices and identity through R&E participation. It also suggests implications for research programs for education, especially for students who have already articulated a science-related career but still have only foggy notions about science.

  • This research purposed to verify the effects of children's peer attachment, community spirit, and multi-cultural acceptability on their adaptation to school. Also, I verified the difference of school life adaptation according to the degrees of peer communication, trust, alienation, community spirit, and multi-cultural acceptability. This research utilized Korean Children and Adolescent Panel Survey data to get more comprehensive and objective research result. As a result, the children who had higher peer attachment relationships (with more peer communication and better trust), higher community spirit, and higher level of multi-cultural awareness and acceptability adapted to school better. In particular, peer attachment had the highest effect on the children's school adaptation, community spirit next, followed by multi-cultural acceptability. Therefore, children's education needs to enhance their intimacy with peer groups, compliance with basic norms in school communities, and arouse rightful multi-cultural awareness in order to help them adapt to school better.

For the purpose of this study, perception on service performance is defined as "the perception of the changes in daily life as a result or in the course of using Cultural Welfare Services, i.e., the users' own perception of the tangible changes made through the community experience, the perception of others arising from interaction within the community, and the perception of future social relations or vision of the future." The study was conducted by using the qualitative research method of phenomenological approach aimed at understanding the essential aspects of interpersonal phenomena as they occur in a sociocultural context. The outcomes of the study that users' perception on performance of Cultural Welfare Services is principally "a process of enabling users who have hitherto led a life devoid of meaning and values to explore the opportunities of changing the course of life by awakening their cultural sensitivity." With regard to the essence of performance, which is a higher category, the analyses have led to the following findings: "perception of 'me' within the community", "emotional stability acquired in the course of task performance", "perception of a new 'me' through community activities", "perception of 'others' face to face with me", and "exploration of opportunities for a new life".

  • This study is to demonstrate that public libraries help community to become an active 'Community of Practice(CoP)'. In order to prove this hypothesis, 'Libraries Transforming Communities(LTC)' initiative of American Library Association is analyzed. Public libraries participating in LTC program solved problems of communities through making CoPs by librarians as a catalyst. People's recognition about public libraries is altered by the problem-solving practice. The followings are 4-level transforming relationship model of public library and community: Leadership Development for Librarian CoPs; Librarian CoPs for improving library services; Community CoPs with library for solving problems; Community as CoP.
