  • The pull-out capacity of expansion anchor(heavy duty anchor and wedge anchor) was studied experimentally in this paper. Loading conditions included tension, shear, and combined tension and shear. The heavy duty anchor and wedge anchor were manufactured in domestic and installed In plain concrete. The failure mode of steel and concrete were studied carefully for the analytical formula of the anchorage design and the experimental data were compared with different models for the interaction of tension and shear capacities. Based on the research, the following conclusion may be drawn : The interaction of forces is well-described by an elliptical interaction relationship.

  • The nailed joints in wood construction are commonly designed to resist and carry the lateral load but also subject to withdrawal force like uplift load due to the wind. This research was conducted to evaluate the performance of nailed joint composed of dimension lumber and sheathing materials through the nail withdrawal and unsymmetric double shear joint test, and then compared to current design values. The withdrawal strength was greatly dependant on wood specific gravity, and the withdrawal strength of I-joist with OSB showed higher value in spite of low specific gravity. The maximum withdrawal loads were greater than that of derived current design values about 5 times. The lateral resistance of Japanese larch/OSB nailed joints was higher than that of SPF/OSB nailed joint, and derived allowable lateral strength of nailed joints in this study exceeded the current design values. The failure mode of nailed joints was primarily due to the nail bending and this tendency was notable in SPF/OSB nailed joint.

  • In this study, performance of the post-installed anchor system was evaluated with reduced strength of concrete and anchor. One of the post-installed anchors was selected to performance evaluation. Concrete strength was reduced by freeze-thawing test, and the post-installed anchor strength was reduced by corrosion test. The post-installed Anchor was installed in concrete of freezing and thawing and original concrete, and corroded anchor was installed in original concrete only. Anchor diameter and installation depth of the anchor were the variable for each specimen. Performance of post-installed anchor system of each specimen was evaluated by pullout test. Anchor diameter and installation depth of anchor, it may affect the performance of the post-installed anchor system from the experimental test results. Fracture mode of each post-installed anchor system had occurred differently depending on the durability of concrete and anchor. The anchor pullout strength from the experimental test results was used in order to compare with the results of CCD (Concrete Capacity Design) method, and CCD equation was modified. Modified equation was able to predict the anchor pullout strength of post-installed anchor system in Original concrete and freezing and thawing of concrete.

  • In RC structure, sufficient anchorage of reinforcement is necessary for the member to produce the full strength. Generally, conventional standard hook is used for the reinforcement's anchorage. However, the use of standard hook results in steel congestion, making fabrication and construction difficult. Mechanical anchor offers a potential solution to these problems and may also ease fabrication, construction and concrete placement. In this paper, the required characteristics and the design considerations of mechanical anchor were studied. Also, the mechanical anchor was designed according to the requirements. To investigate the pull-out behavior and properness of mechanical anchorage, pull-out tests were performed. The parameters of tests were embedment length, diameter of reinforcement, concrete compressive strength, and spacing of reinforcements. The strengths of mechanical anchor were consistent with the predictions by CCD method. The slip between mechanical anchor and concrete could be controlled under 0.2mm. Therefore, the mechanical anchor with adequate embedment could be used for reinforcement's anchorage. However, it was observed that the strength of mechanical anchors with short spacing of reinforcements was greatly reduced. To apply the mechanical anchor in practice (e.g. anchorage of the beams reinforcements in beam-column joint), other effects that affect the mechanical anchor mechanism, such as confinement effect of adjacent member from frame action or effects of shear reinforcement, should be considered.

  • The demand for large-scale horticultural complexes utilizing reclaimed lands is increasing, and one of the pending issues for the construction of large-scale facilities is to establish foundation design criteria. In this paper, we tried to review previous studies on the method of reinforcing the foundation of soft ground. Target construction methods are spiral piles, wood piles, crushed stone piles and PF (point foundation) method. In order to evaluate the performance according to the basic construction method, pull-out resistance, bearing capacity, and settlement amount were measured. At the same diameter, pull-out resistance increased with increasing penetration depth. Simplified comparison is difficult due to the difference in reinforcement method, diameter, and penetration depth, but it showed high bearing capacity in the order of crushed stone pile, PF method, and wood pile foundation. In the case of wood piles, the increase in uplift resistance was different depending on the slenderness ratio. Wood, crushed stone pile and PF construction methods, which are foundation reinforcement works with a bearing capacity of 105 kN/㎡ to 826 kN/㎡, are considered sufficient methods to be applied to the greenhouse foundation. There was a limitation in grasping the consistent trend of each foundation reinforcement method through existing studies. If these data are supplemented through additional empirical tests, it is judged that a basic design guideline that can satisfy the structure and economic efficiency of the greenhouse can be presented.

  • Recently, in retrofit of RC structures using FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer), researches about Near-Surface-Mounted Rertofit (NSMR) method have been widely performed. In NSMR, FRP bar is normally inserted in the slit formed in the cover concrete and then bonded by using epoxy mortar. In this paper, the bond characteristic of NSMR using FRP plate instead of bar was studied experimentally. Fracture behavior is observed from bond test using the parameters of embedment length, shear key, and FRP plate layer. In addition, an equation to predict the splitting strength of NSMR using FRP is proposed using the test result. The results showed that when the longer embedment length and more layers of FRP are used, the higher bond strength is achieved. There was a good co-relationship between the test and calculated results using the proposed equation.

  • This paper presents the evaluation of pullout strengths of expansion anchors and wedge anchors that can cause a failure of the concrete on the basis of the design for anchorage. Tests are conducted for heavy-duty anchors and wedge anchors domestically manufactured and to be installed in plain concrete member. The mainly testing parameters reflected the effects of edge distance. Design of post-installed steel anchors is presented by the Concrete Capacity Design(CCD) in European Organization for Technical Approval. This approach is compared to the well-known provisions, ACI 349-90 specification. The use of both methods to predict the concrete failure load of expansion anchor in uncracked concrete under monotonic loading for important applications is compared. In this study, the concrete tension capacity of fastenings with Heavy-duty Anchors and Wedge Anchors in plain concrete predicted by ACI 349-90 and the Concrete Capacity Design method has been compared with the results of tests.

  • In the post-beam structure, the infilled light-frame construction provides most shear strengths. Shear properties of the light-frame structure can be estimated from the shear properties of nailed connection for the sheathings, and those of nailed connections can be done from nail bending strengths. For the basic study to predict the yield strength and the slip modulus of a nailed sheathing shear wall, those of a nailed joint were examined from nail bending strengths. To estimate shear properties of a nailed connection, referenced bearing strength and bearing constant for the wood members and the experimental nail bending strengths of the helically threaded nail were applied. The yield strength using the diameter at grooves instead of shank diameter was well coincided with the experimental value, but the slip modulus was estimated much smaller. The effective factors, specific gravity for the main member, withdrawal by nail head diameter to the side member, and embedment and moment at the nail head were considered, and further examinations are needed for the precise prediction of the nailed connections.

  • This study was focused on the investigation of the distribution of trees which is an important factor for the improvement of the river environment, and the experimental examination of resistant force of trees to the external forces. The investigation of plant distribution performed in 11 major rivers in Korea showed that the willow family grows spontaneously over the whole country. The field experiments on the resistant force of trees were carried out on the 78 trees of 8 species in 3 different sites to estimate whether pulled out trees damage downstream hydraulic structure. The experiments were performed by the method that a backhoe drew trees and the forces were measured when the trees were overturned and pulled out. The analysis of the experimental results showed that there is a linear correlation between the resistant force and DHB (diameter at breast height).

  • This paper describes an experimental study on the mechanical characteristic and behavior of a structure that has a joint between the reinforced concrete (RC) member and steel plate concrete (SC) member. An out-of-plane flexural test on an L-type test specimen and in-plane shear test on an I-type test specimen were carried out by means of repeated cyclic loading until their failure. Based on the results, the former showed pull-out failure mode of anchored vertical bars while the latter exhibited flexural failure mode of the basement member. These results reveal that the maximum capacity of the specimens is 96% and 82%, respectively, compared with the theoretical value.
