  • Identifying and searching for characters appearing in scenes during multimedia video editing is an arduous and time-consuming process. Applying artificial intelligence to labor-intensive media editing tasks can greatly reduce media production time, improving the creative process efficiency. In this paper, a method is proposed which combines existing artificial intelligence based techniques to automate character recognition and search tasks for video editing. Object detection, face detection, and pose estimation are used for character localization and face recognition and color space analysis are used to extract unique representation information.

  • The movie "Beautiful Mind" directed by Ron Howard is about a genius global mathematician, John Nash's life. In the movie, the main actor, John Nash is a schizophrenic patient who suffers from hallucination and delusion, and his illusion appears as three distinct characters. Each researcher has had a different opinion on the interpretation of these three characters, but many parts of their opinions are losing consistency. Especially the girl is assumed to be a character from the main actor's hallucination because she is ageless or there is no interpretation of the girl. Although the director Ron Howard did not adopt Aldous Huxley's theory "the more you know the more you see" for the movie, he analyzed the characters in the way of his own with thinking that he can analyze them in accordance with the knowledge level of audience. The imaginary characters come out from John Nash's head and who he wants to be. They are the basic human needs, earthly desire, sexual desire and the desire for honor. John Nash minutely reflects these three kinds of desires in an imaginary world through the three characters. This thesis is to newly suggest the symbolic meaning of the imaginary characters in the movie by clearly analyzing the meaning of the controversial three characters.

  • To establish a foundation to objectively interpret Chosun history, we construct people network of the Chosun dynasty. The network shows scale free network properties as if most social networks do. The people network is composed of 1,379 nodes and 3,874 links and its diameter is 14. To analysis of the network dynamics, whole network that is composed of 27 king networks were constructed by adding the first king, Taejo network to the second king, Jeongjong network and then continuously adding the next king networks. Interestingly, betweenness and closeness centralities were gradually decreased but stress centrality was drastically increased. These results indicate that information flow is gradually slowing and hub node position is more centrally oriented as growing the network. To elucidate key persons from the network, k-core and MCODE algorithms that can extract core or module structures from whole network were employed. It is a possible to obtain new insight and hidden information by analyzing network dynamics. Due to lack of the dynamic interacting data, there is a limit for network dynamic research. In spite of using concise data, this research provides us a possibility that annals of the Chosun dynasty are very useful historical data for analyzing network dynamics.

  • Identifying characters who appear in a story and analyzing their relationships is essential to understanding the story. This paper aims to identify the two actants (or character roles) as Helper and Opponent in Greimas's Actantial model by identifying Subject (i.e., protagonist) and analyzing the emotional interactions between the Subject and the two actants (Helper/Opponent). Our proposed method consists of three steps. First, we identify objects (i.e., characters) appearing in the text story. Next, we extract relational information through the interaction of the characters, and then classify emotions in the text expressed as relational information. Finally, we represent the flow of emotional relations among characters as a directed graph. The node with the highest degree is considered as the Subject because it includes the most relational information. The node that sends the most positive/negative emotions to the Subject is considered as the Helper/Oppenent, respectively. Our research contributes to the computer-based narrative understanding by providing a computational method that automatically extracts the three key character roles (Subject, Helper, and Opponent) from the text story.

  • Video instance segmentation is an intelligent visual task with high complexity because it not only requires object instance segmentation for each image frame constituting a video, but also requires accurate tracking of instances throughout the frame sequence of the video. In special, human instance segmentation in drama videos has an unique characteristic that requires accurate tracking of several main characters interacting in various places and times. Also, it is also characterized by a kind of the class imbalance problem because there is a significant difference between the frequency of main characters and that of supporting or auxiliary characters in drama videos. In this paper, we introduce a new human instance datatset called MHIS, which is built upon drama videos, Miseang, and then propose a novel video data augmentation method, CDVA, in order to overcome the data imbalance problem between character classes. Different from the previous video data augmentation methods, the proposed CDVA generates more realistic augmented videos by deciding the optimal location within the background clip for a target human instance to be inserted with taking rich spatio-temporal context embedded in videos into account. Therefore, the proposed augmentation method, CDVA, can improve the performance of a deep neural network model for video instance segmentation. Conducting both quantitative and qualitative experiments using the MHIS dataset, we prove the usefulness and effectiveness of the proposed video data augmentation method.

  • In this paper, we propose and describe the system to visualize the story of contents such as movies and novels. Character-net is applied as story model in order to visualize story. However, it is the form to be accumulated for total movie story, though it can depict the relationship between characters. We have developed the system that analyzes and shows the variation of Character-net and characters' tendency in order to represent story variation depending on movie progression. This system is composed by two windows that can play and analyze sequential Character-nets by time, and can analyze time variant graph of characters' degree centrality. First window has a function that supports to find important story points like the scenes that main characters appear or meet firstly. Second window supports a function that track each character's tendency or a variation of his tendency through analyzing in-degree graph and out-degree. This paper describes the proposed system and discusses additional requirements.

  • This study has attempted to explore the audience's visual attention about the subtitles types of CATV entertainment program. To achieve this, this research has measured the dwell time and average fixation data through the eye-tracking test and analysed the reason of particular visual attention by in-depth interview. According to the eye-tracking research findings, four types of subtitles(character metaphor, character metonymy, event metaphor, event metonymy) were measured the highest dwell time and average fixation time. Also, according to in-depth interview, visual attention was clearly turned up that event metonymy constructs the conflicts between characters and overstates the trip place romantically. This results means that staffs of intensify the reality and visual pleasure through event metonymic subtitles.

  • A drama, generally composed of dozens of times, is one of the most popular broadcasting program genres, and it has the characteristics that the status and interrelationships of characters are changing as time goes on and important acts affecting the story occur sporadically. Therefore, when viewers missed some times in the middle of a drama, it is difficult to understand the drama without the changed information on the characters and notable actions. This paper proposes a data service which provides the updated information of the characters and important acts based on the drama scene. The data service has the characteristics that it provides the information on the characters shown in the current drama scene, and the information about the people mentioned in the dialogue in the scene. This paper includes a general introduction to the data services, the formal definition of the drama scene identification and character information, and an DVB-SI-based method for transmitting the information to the data service.

  • is a movie about the frustration and the despair of young people in Korean society today. It is different from the previous Lee Chang-dong's film in that it provides the main character's perception and feelings about the world as the ultimate cause of the protagonist's actions. Lee Chang-dong's characters begin to change from . The main character of Burning goes one step further. He seems to believe that the main character's only weapon to overcome the logic and constraints of reality is obsessive and compulsive behaviors. Unlike previous movies, the character in Burning is a person who practices awareness and proves his character through action. I will analyze characters in to suggest the change of film form. Especially I will look at how the character's actions and the writer's own voice can meet and what results it bring about in this movie. It will lead to his changes in film form and an idea on the young people in Korean society today.

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze the psychological dynamics of the characters in the novel 'vegetarian' of the Han Gang and the relationship patterns in the system by applying object relation theory. 'Vegetarianism' has already been analyzed and reinterpreted in various angles, but if you look at it from the object relationship theory and the systematic perspective, you can understand the inevitable history of the generation through psychological analysis and relation dynamics of the person. First, we will analyze the psychological dynamics of the characters by analyzing the meanings and exploring the meaning with the object relation theory and concept. The psychological analysis and the search process of the characters based on the theory are enough evidence for the counselor to reinterpret the life story of the client in the future clinical scene. In addition, in order to realize ethical but practical clinical education, the field of clinical practice will be extended when analyzing the characters using art. It is suggested that the meaning search through various character analysis needs to be accumulated culturally.
