  • This study is to analyze environmental problems which have caused by changes of the population and agriculture in North Korea. Main results of the research are following. First, Population of the North Korea shows lower increase ratio less than 2% growth from 1970's to middle of 1990's. This is interpreted by food shortages. Second, population distribution by provinces represented that northern and eastern part of the North Korea were comparatively lower and other western areas were higher. Third, Food situation of the North Korea was relatively better in 1970's, but, 1990's was the worst in the way. Fourth, on the agricultural productivity according to each province, western areas possessing more plains were more higher than mountainous areas of the northern and eastern parts of North Korea. Fifth, Growth ratio of food production and population have grown very steadily until 1990's, but the increase ratio of population exceeded food productivity after 1990's. Sixth, Cropland reclamation for improving these situation have caused deforestation and environmental problems and especially eastern and northern areas became more serious. For the solving these problems of North Korea, it is necessary to get the help of South Korea and international societies with efforts by itself.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the trend of urbanization and population distribution in North Korea. Although North Korean data lack comparable details, attention has been given to the comparison of urban system between North and South Korea. In North Korea, the pace of urbanization was most rapid just after the Korean War, from 1954 to 1960. However, the pace slowed down markedly in the early 1970s and has remained sluggish since then. North Korea is currently much less urbanized than South Korea. As specific features of urbanization in North Korea, emergence of new cities along inland borders, prominence of intermediate-sized cities, and sudden population growth of major cities due to boundary expansion are stressed. Available demographic data also indicate an overwhelming primacy of Pyongyang Municipality in the urban system, and rapid growth of satellite cities in the west-central region. It appears that, in North Korea, urbanization process has been a product of the government's development policies rather than individual's socioeconomic motivation to migrate urbanward. Finally, migration issues after unification of the Korean Peninsula and related problems are discussed in this study.

  • While South Korea's universal healthcare system has garnered attention in public health, the issue of inequality in healthcare service provision among different age groups has incessantly become a significant concern. The focus of this concern is primarily on essential healthcare services, encompassing fundamental aspects of healthcare such as internal medicine, family medicine, and pediatric and adolescent care. This inequality is not limited to differences among age groups (both junior and senior demographics) but also extends to potential disparities in healthcare services based on geographic location, particularly in urban and rural contexts. This paper aims to investigate disparities in primary healthcare service resources in South Korea's evolving economic landscape between 1995 and 2021. We utilize a set of inequality indices with a spatial perspective through geographic cluster analysis. The findings reveal that concerns about inequality have been amplified during various economic events, including the IMF crisis in 1999, the global financial crisis in 2008, and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. These years are identified as significant phases that have contributed to manifesting spatial disparities in primary healthcare provisions, with a particular emphasis on the senior-aged population rather than junior or all population groups. Our findings underscore the pressing need to address the unequal distribution of essential healthcare resources as part of preparedness for potential economic impacts, requiring a comprehensive consideration of the interconnected nature of demographic and spatial dimensions in healthcare services.

  • For a water distribution system, it is necessary to evaluate the superiority between different valve distributions in order to improve the reliability of the water distribution system. In cases of placing more valves to an exiting system or building a new system, we suggest a methodology to select a proper valve distribution after various valve distributions are compared. The suggested methodology is based on simulations of pipe and valve failures to estimate failure impacts of the water distribution system due to pipe and valve failures. It is quantified by the number of customers out of service per pipe failure resulted from pipe and valve failures. To demonstrate its applicability, the methodology is applied to a real water distribution system with two different valve distributions and determines the superiority between those valve distributions. Also, customers out of service along with various valve reliabilities are estimated for those valve distributions to prove the effect of the valve reliability on the reliability of a water distribution system.

  • This study is to construe the spatio-temporal characteristics of temperature in cities and the changes of climatical regions by analyzing a climate change in Korea peninsular. We used daily mean air temperature data which were collected in South and North climate stations for the past 34 years from 1974 to 2007. We created temperature maps of 500m resolution with Inverse Distance Weight in application with adiabatic lapse rate per month in linear relation with height and temperature. In the urbanization area, the data analyzed population in comparison with temperature changes by the year. The south climate region in Korea by the Warmth index was expanded to the middle climate region by the latitude after 1990s. A rise of mean temperature was $0.5{\sim}1.2^{\circ}C$ in urban areas such as Seoul, metropolitan and cities which had a rapid urbanization and industrialization with the population increase between 1980s and 1990s. In case of North Korea, cities such as Pyeongyang, Anju, Gaecheon, and Hesan had the same pattern.

  • A number of case studies that find distribution of longevity population and influencing factors through the spatial data fusion using GIS techniques are growing. The majority cases of these studies are adopt census administrative boundary data for the spatial analysis. However, these methods cannot fully explain the phenomenon of longevity because there are a variety of spatial characteristics within the census administrative boundaries. Therefore, studies of spatial unit are required that realistically reflect the phenomenon of human longevity. The dasymetric mapping method enables to product of spatial unit more realistic than census administrative boundary map and statistic estimates of small area utilizing diversity spatial information. In this study, elderly population of small area has been estimated within statistically significant level that applied the vector based dasymetric mapping method. Also, the cluster analysis confirmed that the variation of local spatial relationship within census administrative boundary. The result of this study implied that the need for local-level studies of the human longevity and the validity of the dashmetric mapping techniques.

  • Urban parks are public spaces that provide various services for any urban resident to use and enjoy. Parks should be fairly distributed so that the urban parks can be equally used amongst different regions, generations and classes. Researches on spatial distribution of urban parks have been continuously conducted from the past based on the principles of fairness with variety, and it was evident that their techniques have become more elaborate and sophisticated. Yet, there have been limitations in the analysis of residents who are the main users of the urban parks. The research done so far was unable to apply the real number of the residents and it was carried out by only classifying and analyzing the population by the same scale(grid in the same sizes), postal(zip) code and administrative district. The actual population that resides within the usable range of urban parks was not used. This study analyzes and evaluates the spatial distribution that the residents can use on foot, by utilizing the service areas and the residents' registration data by addresses. In this study, to analyze the square measure of the service areas of neighborhood parks in Daegu Metropolitan City and the number of residents within and outside of the service area, network analysis techniques were employed and the residents' registration data were utilized. Major findings were that the Square measure of service areas of neighborhood parks turned out to be 31.23% of the square measure of the residential areas and also, that only 43.03% of the population of the Daegu Metropolitan area lives within the service areas of the neighborhood parks.

  • This study assessed the water provisioning and climate mitigation ecosystem services of the urban forest in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The ecosystem service assessment is conducted based on natural function, natural function and population, and natural function and the beneficiary of the ecosystem service. Then, the impact of climate change on ecosystem services is analyzed to figure out the sensitivity of the impact on the beneficiary when the natural function of forest destroys under climate change. Gyeonggi-do has higher function-based water provisioning ecosystem service than Seoul. And population-based water provisioning ecosystem service appears to be higher in the densely populated area. On the other hand, beneficiary-based water provisioning ecosystem service by applying both natural water supply function and beneficiary distribution appears different with the result of population-based water provisioning service assessment. In other words, regions with high beneficiary population show higher ecosystem service than those with a low beneficiary population even though they have the same water storage function. In addition, climate change has a negative impact on the water provisioning ecosystem service. Under climate change, water provisioning service is expected to decrease by 26%. For climate mitigation service, regions close to the forest seem to have a low temperature, which indicates their high climate mitigation service. The center of the city with high beneficiary population shows high beneficiary-based ecosystem service. The climate change impacts the forest growth to decrease which affect the beneficiary-based climate mitigation ecosystem service to decrease by 33%. From this study, we conclude that beneficiary-based function and ecosystem service assessment is needed as well as the supply-based classification of forest function suggested by Korea Forest Service. In addition, we suggest that not only supply-based function classification and ecosystem service assessment but also beneficiary-based function classification and ecosystem service assessment is needed for managing the urban forest, which has been destroyed by climate change. This will contribute to revaluing cases where a forest with low natural function but high beneficiary-based ecosystem service, which is not considered under the current forest function-based assessment system. Moreover, this could assist in developing a suitable management plan for the urban forest.

  • This paper investigates spatial distribution of the knowledge-information occupations by utilizing Geographical Information System(GIS). The knowledge-information occupations, comprised mainly of professionals, engineers and managers, have played a key role in the knowledge-based information society. The uneven development of bureaucratization and informatization among regions have resulted in unequal spatial distribution of the knowledge-information occupations. Analysis of 1995 and 2000 Census shows that these occupations tend to concentrate in some major metropolitan areas, while the other areas show rather traditional occupational structure. This spatial unequality has been also found in the occupational distribution within Seoul. This tendency of spatial concentration in the occupational distribution inherited from the industrial society and is not going to diminish in the knowledge-information society. More aggressive policies to make the most of decentralizing impacts of information and communication technologies should be implemented to counter-balance this tendency.
