New Miniature Phalaenopsis 'Snow Angel' Having White Flower with Pink Lip as Pot Flower (백색에 분홍립 소형의 분화용 팔레놉시스 'Snow Angel' 육성)

  • 'Snow Angel' was developed by National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science in 2008. A cross was made between phalaenopsis '0361', a white and red lip small-medium variety, and Phalaenopsis 'S98PN1', a white and dark pink lip small-medium variety with pink net pattern. The seedling materials were cultivated to 83 seedling lines from 2000 to 2002. The white and pink lip small-phalaenopsis '99-0404-13' with flowers of round shape was selected by individual selection. The selected line was multiplicated and the growth characteristics were investigated for the first characteristic trial from 2003 to 2007. It was named as 'Wonkyo F2-18' in 2008 and investigated for the second characteristic trial of growth characteristics. The examination was executed for stability, uniformity, yearly reproducibility, and public fancy. It was selected as a high quality cultivar with excellent flower shape and flower color from the selection council of new cultivars for agricultural products, there after it was registered as 'Snow Angel' in 2008.

Breeding of New, Orange Mini/Medium Type, High Yielding Cut Flower Gerbera hybrida 'Sweety' (오렌지색 중.소륜 절화용 다수성 거베라 신품종 '스위티' 육성)

  • A new orange-colored, cut flower gerbera (Gerbera hybrida Hort.) cultivar 'Sweety' was developed from a cross between 'Grandeur' and 'Songsongee', followed by selections of seedlings and lines at the Flower Breeding Research Institute, Gyeongnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services (ARES) from 1999 to 2004. Three time evaluations were conducted from 2003 for the detailed characteristics of the new cultivar. 'Sweety' has semi-double type mini- or medium-sized flowers in good harmony with orange(RHS, 38-A) ray florets and a green center. It has good, stable flower shape and strong peduncle, and its vase life was 10.4 days. The average flower yield was about 51.0 stems per plant/year in greenhouse trails during 2003 and 2004. This cultivar was registered to the Korea Seed and Variety Service for commercialization in 2006. Year-round production of this cultivar is possible in the greenhouse condition in Korean climate.

A New Pale Yellow Large Gerbera hybrida Cultivar, 'Honey Cream' with High Yield for Cut Flower (크림색 대륜 절화용 다수성 거베라 신품종 '하니크림' 육성)

  • A new pale yellow gerbera(Gerbera hybrida Hort.) cultivar 'Honey Cream' was developed from a cross between 'Princessa' and 'Picasso', followed by seedling and line selections at the Flower Research Institute, Gyeongnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services(ARES) in 2006. Three times evaluations were conducted from 2003 for the detailed characteristics of the new cultivar. 'Honey Cream' has semi-double type large flowers in good harmony with pale yellow(RHS, 11-D) ray floret and green center. It has good, stable flower shape and strong peduncle, and its vase life was 12.3 days. The average flower yield of 'Honey Cream' was about 48.5 stems per plant/year in greenhouse trails during 2003 and 2006. This cultivar was registered to the Korea Seed and Variety Service(KSVS) for commercialization in 2007. Year-round production of this cultivar is possible in the greenhouse condition in Korean climate.

Three times evaluations were conducted from 2004 for the detailed characteristics of the new cultivar, 'Yetty' has single type mini flower in good harmony with orange (RHS 25-A) ray floret and browen center. It has good stable flower shape and strong peduncle, and its vase life was 14.8 days. The average yield of 'Yerty' was 98.5 flowers per plant a year in greenhouse yield trials carried out from 2004 to 2006. This cultivar registered for commercialization in 2007. 'Yerty' would be cultured under greenhouse condition in Korea.

  • In this paper, remote sensing is used to estimate trophic state which is primary concern in a lake. In using remote sensing, this study estimated trophic state not with conventional method such as regression equations but with classification methods. As europhication is caused by the extraodinary proliferation of the algae, chlorophyll a and transparency are applied to remote sensing data.. Maximum Likelihood Classification and Minimum Distance Classification which are kinds of classification methods enabled trophic state to be confirmed in a lake. These are obtained as the result of applying remote sensing to classify trophic state in a lake. Firest, when we evaluate tropic state in a large area of water body, the application of remote sensing data can obtain more than 70% accuracies just in using basic classification methods. Second, in the aspect of classification, the accuracy of Minimum Distance Classification is usually better than that of Maximum Likelihood Classification. This result is caused that samples have normal distribution, but their numbers are a few to apply statistical method. Therefore, classification method is required such as artificial neural networks which are not influenced by statistical distribution. Third, this study enables the trophic state of water body to be analyzed and evaluated rapidly, periodically and visibly. Also, this study is good for forming proper countermeasure accompanying with trophic state progress extent in a lake and is useful for basic-data.

Temperature Control of Seed Germination in Carex jaluensis Kom. Native to Korea (온도조건에 따른 자생 참삿갓사초 발아 특성)

  • 참삿갓사초는 전국에 분포하는 여러해살이풀로 사료용, 사방용 소재로 사용되며 조경용, 관상용 지피식물로 사용되기도 한다. 참삿갓사초의 대량증식을 위해 가장 효과적인 파종 시기를 추정하기 위해 생장상을 이용해 인공적인 온도조건을 주고 참삿갓사초 종자의 발아율을 조사하였다. 실험을 위해 온도를 항온조건(30, 25, 20, 15, $5^{\circ}C$)과 변온조건(15/30, 20/10, $25/15^{\circ}C$) 총 8가지 조건으로 설정하여 발아율을 매일 측정하였다. 광조건은 명/암을 매일 12시간씩 반복하였다. 항온조건에서 발아율은 $20^{\circ}C$$17{\pm}7%$로 가장 우수하였고, $25^{\circ}C$ ($12{\pm}2.8%$), $30^{\circ}C$ ($3{\pm}1.9%$) 순으로 나타났으며, $15^{\circ}C$, $5^{\circ}C$에서는 발아하지 않았다. 그러나 $20^{\circ}C$$25^{\circ}C$조건에서 통계적인 유의차는 발생되지 않았다. 한편, 변온조건에서의 발아율은 $15/30^{\circ}C$$91{\pm}3.8%$로 가장 우수하였고, $25/15^{\circ}C$ ($89{\pm}4.1%$), $20/10^{\circ}C$ ($69{\pm}3.4%$) 순으로 나타났다. 그러나 $15/30^{\circ}C$$25/15^{\circ}C$조건에서 통계적인 유의차는 발생되지 않았다. 따라서 참삿갓사초의 종자발아를 위해서는 변온이 필요하며, $25^{\circ}C$ 이상의 온도가 필요하다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 가장 효과적인 파종 시기를 추정할 때, 낮-밤 $10^{\circ}C$ 이상의 기온차가 있는 초여름~늦여름 사이가 가장 적절할 것으로 판단된다.

Characteristics of the new cultivar were evaluated three times from 2003 to 2004. 'Summer Ring' has semi-double type mini flower in good harmony with pink (RHS, 56-D) ray floret and green center. It has good stable flower shape and strong peduncle, and its vase life was 14.7 days. The average yield of 'Summer Ring' flower was 69 per plant/year in greenhouse yield trails during 2003 and 2004. This cultivar was registered for commercialization in 2005. Commercial production of 'Summer Ring' could be possible throughout the country under greenhouse condition.

Fermentative Water Purification based on Bio-hydrogen (생물학적 수소 발효를 통한 수처리 시스템)

  • Among various techniques for hydrogen production from organic wastewater, a dark fermentation is considered to be the most feasible process due to the rapid hydrogen production rate. However, the main drawback of it is the low hydrogen production yield due to intermediate products such as organic acids. To improve the hydrogen production yield, a co-culture system of dark and photo fermentation bacteria was applied to this research. The maximum specific growth rate of R. sphaeroides was determined to be $2.93h^{-1}$ when acetic acid was used as a carbon source. It was quite high compared to that of using a mixture of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). Acetic acid was the most attractive to the cell growth of R. sphaeroides, however, not less efficient in the hydrogen production. In the co-culture system with glucose, hydrogen could be steadily produced without any lag-phase. There were distinguishable inflection points in the accumulation of hydrogen production graph that resulted from the dynamic production of VFAs or consumption of it by the interaction between the dark and photo fermentation bacteria. Lastly, the hydrogen production rate of a repeated fed-batch run was $15.9mL-H_2/L/h$, which was achievable in the sustainable hydrogen production.

Breeding of 'Daemani' Cultivar of Gomchwi with Big Leaf and Resistance of Powdery Mildew Disease (흰가루병 저항성이면서 잎이 큰 곰취 '대마니' 품종 육성)

  • 곰취는 주로 쌈용, 장아찌, 나물용 등으로 이용되고 있으며 주로 자생 곰취의 일종인 '곤달비' 라고 하는 종이 많이 재배되고 있다. 일반 곰취에 비해 곤달비는 향이 진하지 않고 씁쓸한 맛이 적어 인기가 많은 종이다. 또한 농가에서는 엽수가 많아 수량이 높기 때문에 재배를 선호하게 된 종이기도 하다. 그러나 곤달비는 수확후 여름을 지나면서 고온건조기에 흰가루병과 식물체가 위축되는 로젯현상으로 잎이 작고 진록색으로 되거나 고사하여 다음해의 수량을 저하시키는 원인이 되고 있다. 이렇게 2~3년 재배를 하면 연작장애와 더불어 결주가 생기기 시작하고 수량이 급격히 감소하는 문제가 발생되는 실정이다. 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위하여 흰가루병에 저항성이면서 세력이 우수한 한대리곰취와 일반곰취를 교배하여 흰가루병에 강하고 수량성이 뛰어난 계통을 선발하여 그 동안 '쌈마니', '다목이', '곰마니', '수마니', '그린베어' 등 5품종을 육성한 바 있다. 이번에는 용도 다양화를 위하여 잎이 매우 커서 김밥처럼 곰취 밥말 이용을 선발하여 품종을 만들고자 하였다. '대마니' 품종은 2007년 7월에서 9월까지 인공교배를 하여 종자를 얻었으며 2008년 3월에 파종하여 육묘후 포장에 정식하여 생육관리를 하였다. 2013년 생육 및 수량특성 조사에서 일반적으로 많이 재배되는 '곤달비' 종보다 우수한 7033-1번 개체를 선발하였다. 선발된 7033-1번 개체는 2014년부터 2020년까지 노지포장에서 증식되면서 고농G-7호로 계통화 되었으며 2019년부터 2년간의 생육특성 검정을 통하여 최종 선발하였다. 그리고 2020년 농작물직무육성 품종선정위원회에서 신품종으로 선정되어 '대마니(Daemani)'로 명명되었다. '대마니' 품종의 특성은 엽병귀의 색이 연녹색을 띠고 엽병에 털이 있으며 잎 뒷면에 털은 없으나 광택이 없고. 엽맥밀도는 보통이다. 쌈용, 데침쌈용, 묵나물용으로 이용이 가능하다. 특히 엽장과 엽폭이 39cm와 49cm로 '잎이 커서 밥말이용으로 적당하다. 주당 엽수는 54개로 '쌈마니' 품종보다 매우 적다. 주당 수량은 4,961g 으로 '쌈마니' 1,362g 보다 3배 정도 많았다. 추대시는 8월 28일, 개화시는 9월 16일로 '쌈마니' 품종보다 약 6일 정도 늦었다. 흰가루병 저항성 정도는 '쌈마니' 품종의 중도 저항성에 비하여 전혀 병에 감염되지 않는 강한 저항성을 보였다. 이와 같은 특성의 흰가루병 저항성 품종이고 잎이 큰 '대마니' 품종이 농가에 보급되어 출하된다면 밥말이용 등 용도다양화를 통한 새로운 소비창출이 가능할 것으로 기대된다.

FACTORS AFFECTING THE FORMATION OF SOLUBLE GLUCAN BY LACTOCOCCUS LACTIS 1370 (유산구균 1370의 수용성 글루캔 형성에 영향을 미치는 인자)

  • The water-soluble glucan produced by Lactococcus lactis 1370 affects the formation of dental plaque by Streptococcus mutans. In this study the factors affecting the formation of water-soluble glucan were assessed as the optical density of culture supernatant of Lactococcus lactis 1370 in the spectrophotometer. 1. The optical density of culture supernatant was high when Lactococcus lactis 1370 was cultured in M17 broth with 5% sucrose, while being low in culture supernatant of Streptococcus mutans. 2. The optical density of culture supernatant was higher when Lactococcus lactis 1370 was cultured in M17 broth with 10% sucrose than when being cultured without sucrose (p<0.05), and was higher at pH 7 than pH 5 (p<0.05). 3. The optical density of culture supernatant was the highest at $37^{\circ}C$ among $32^{\circ}C,\;37^{\circ}C\;and\;42^{\circ}C$, and was higher in the anaerobic incubator than in the aerobic incubator (p<0.05). 4. The optical density of culture supernatant was the highest in the media containing 1.0mM $CaCl_2$ (p<0.05), 2.5mM KCl (p<0.05), and 1.6mM $MgCl_2$. 5. When Streptococcus mutans was cultured in the media containing a quarter culture supernatant of Lactococcus lactis 1370 grown in M17 broth, the mean weight of produced artificial plaque was 103.0mg on the wire, whereas being significantly reduced to 5.6mg in the media containing a quarter culture supernatant of Lactococcus lactis 1370 grown in M17 broth containing 5% sucrose (p<0.05). These results indicate that the water-soluble glucan is more formed by Lactococcus lactis 1370 in the media containing sucrose or under the adequate conditions for the growth of bacteria, and inhibits the formation of artificial plaque by Streptococcus mutans.
