  • To measure the fertility rate and pregnancy wastage of women in rural area, 3,780 married women under 50 years old who were not sterilized either woman or husband in Gunwee county were followed up for 2 years. Seventeen Myun health workers visited these women periodically to check the status of their family planning practice and menstruation. Pregnant women were interviwed for their past obstetric history and followed up to the time of delivery. Family planning was practiced in 51.6% of the 6,826 women-years observed during the period from April 1, 1985 to March 31, 1987. Pregnancy, abortion and delivery covered 7.6% of the observed women-years and family planning was not practiced in 36.5% of the women-years. When sterilized women at the beginning of the study were included, the family planning practice rate was 72.1% which was slightly higher than the national family planning practice rate. However, 28% of the women of 30-39 years old had not practiced family planning although they had 2-3 children and they used more such less effective methods as safe-period method and condom than the women of 20-29 years old. Overall pregnancy rate was 14.3 per 100 woman-years. Women of 25-29 years old had the highest pregnancy rate of 27.4 per ,100 woman-years. Pregnancy wastage including spontaneous and induced abortions and still births was 22.0% of all pregnancies and it increased with the age of women; 15.8% in women less than 30 years old and 43.7% in women of 30 years and over. Women who terminated the pregnancy with induced abortion had more pregnancies, more previous induced and spontaneous abortions and shorter pregnancy interval than those women who terminated with live birth. Pregnant women terminated with a live birth had received 4.2 prenatal cares on the average. Eighty-five percent of deliveries occurred at a medical facility and 15% at home which was substantially lower home delivery rate than the other rural area of Korea. This may be due to the effects of the demonstration project for the primary health care in 1970s in Gunwee county. These findings suggest that family planning service in rural area should be strengthened by promoting the use of more effective contraceptive method among women over 30 years of age.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the actual vegetation and the DGN(Degree of Green Naturality) from Namdeogyusan of the Deogyusan National Park to Sosagogae in the Baekdudaegan in 2003. The actual vegetation of the surveyed site were classified into 14 plant communities and cropland, etc.; Natural forest were classified into 9 plant communities; Quercus mongolica communities, mixed forest, deciduous broadleaf plant communities, Pinus densiflora communities, etc. And afforested lands were classified into 4 forest types; Larix leptolepis communities, Pinus rigida communities, etc. The DGN 9 was appeared the widest area as 57.97% and the DGN 8 was 26.80%. The DGN 1 and 2 were appeared as 5.18% at Sosagogae and Paejae district in outside of the Deogyusan National Park.

  • This study was carried out to provide the basic information for the implementation of population quality policies by analyzing fetal life. The outcomes and process of all the pregnancies of women with spouses living in Gapyung-gun, Kyunggi province from November 3, 1993 through December 31, 1995 were analyzed. The results of the study are as follows: According to the fetal life table, the estimated probability of pregnancy outcome showed 53.5% of live birth, 14.5% of fetal death, 32.0% of induced abortion, which resulted in 46.5% of pregnancy wastage throughout gestation period. The curve of the estimated probability of pregnancy outcome by gestation weeks showed L shape in case of total pregnancy rate, induced abortion rate and fetal death rate. The estimated probability of fetal death was 21.9% in case that the induced abortion was excluded, which was 7.4% higher than the case that induced abortion was included. The expected duration of pregnancy was 22.9 weeks until the fourth week of gestation and then started to become the highest, 26.6 weeks at the tenth week. At the 11th week, it declined to decrease to 26.4 weeks. This is attributed to the fact that the pregnancy wastage including fetal death and induced abortion occurred in the early period of pregnancy. The establishment of appropriate policies to cope with this situation are needed.

  • Forty species of lactic acid bacteria isolated from gajami sikhae were identified as Lactobacillus plantarum, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Lactobacillus brevis, and Weissella paramesenteroides. 10 of the 40 strains were selected and used for the test. In this study, experiments such as those using acid and artificial gastric juice resistance, bile acid resistance, autoaggregation, coaggregation, and cell surface hydrophobicity were conducted to utilize lactic acid bacteria separated from gajami sikhae as probiotics. The separated lactic acid strains showed high survival rates through displaying resistance to acidic and artificial gastric juices; L. plantarum GS11 showed the best resistance. Also, as a result of a measurement of bile acid resistance, all lactic acid bacteria stocks showed survival of more than 100% with a probiotic number of 108 to 109 log CFU/ml. After evaluating cohesion to indirectly measure cell surface adhesion, autoaggregation ability was shown to be more than 46%. Measurement of xylene adhesion for cell surface hydrophobicity evaluation revealed better cell adhesion than B. subtilis, which has 32.2% hydrophobicity in isolated lactic acid strains. Antibacterial force measurement found antibacterial activity in lactic acid bacteria, excluding L. plantarum GS12 and L. plantarum GS13. Therefore, it was judged that lactic acid bacteria separated from gajami sikhae could be used as probiotics with various probiotic properties.

  • This study explores the integration of cutting-edge technology with records management, aiming to create new value not only in work processes but also in record information services. The research focuses on the case of constructing an "AI-based cultural heritage research record learning data and search system," carried out by the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (NRICH) Archives, and analyzes user satisfaction results. "Discovering Cultural Heritage with ZOOM" is a system designed to proactively predict research data demand by constructing big data (learning data) from images (675,338 items) contained in 1,421 volumes of publications in the cultural heritage field, spanning from 1973 to the present, and simultaneously presenting 50 similar images. This initiative aims to foster change and development in the field of records management and cultural heritage in response to the Fourth Industrial Revolution's advanced technologies. It is expected to provide valuable information to researchers, practitioners, and the general public alike.

  • Lactic acid bacteria showing alginate-degrading and cellulolytic activity were isolated and identified as a starter for seaweed fermentation. A total of 331 strains of lactic acid bacteria isolated from various Korean traditional foods, such as Kimchi, Jeotgal, and Makgeolli, were examined alginate-degrading and cellulolytic activity by the plate assay method. Six strains showed strong alginate-degrading and cellulolytic activity among the isolated 331 strains. Among these six strains, four strains (strain No. 162, 164, 192, and 196) showed probiotic properties (antimicrobial activity, tolerance to simulated gastric juice, artificial bile acid, and NaCl). No. 192 strain (Gram-positive cocci, catalase negative, and homofermentative) showed the best probiotic properties among selected strains and was identified as Enterococcus faecium by 16S rRNA sequencing. Strain No. 192 (E. faecium) showed the best growth and antioxidative activity during seaweed (sea mustard and sea tangle) fermentation for 72 h at $37^{\circ}C$ among the four selected strains.
