  • In this study, a simple, efficient, user-based program called SCAR was developed for evaluating the sliding and collapse of artificial reefs due to hydrodynamic forces in ocean environments. SCAR was developed by applying Delphi code and a Graphical User Interface (GUI) based on the Morison formula for evaluating and analyzing the stability of artificial reefs. SCAR can be applied widely for design and stability evaluation of fishery structures (such as artificial reefs or other underwater structures) in undergraduate and graduate courses and by experts in the field.

  • In Korea, quantitative growth rate of artificial reef construction is supposed to reach the peak point therefore, new approach is needed to the point of artificial reefs business. Functional reefs like shellfish reefs, recreational reefs, seaweed reefs as well as fish reefs are beneficial alternatives. This study conducted hydraulic testing to assess the stability of new types of artificial reefs (ARs) constructed to promote the growth of shellfish and seaweed. The results of this study revealed that some dimensionless design parameters affected the stability of new types of artificial reef under various wave and water depth conditions in the fixed bed condition. The findings also highlight the importance of hydraulic experiments in solving problems that have emerged in the design and construction of artificial reefs.

  • Old train carriages have been used to create artificial reefs (AR) as part of programs to enhance ocean fisheries and recreational resources. This study conducted hydraulic modeling experiments to estimate the structural stability of a train carriage AR. By applying fixed- and movable-bed conditions and Froude similitude, theoretical and hydraulic experiments revealed major design forces(e.g., water waves and currents). The results of this study showed that some dimensionless design parameters (e.g., surf similarity parameters, water particle velocity, scouring, and deposition) also affect the stability of an AR under various wave and current field conditions. In the fixed-bed condition, movement of the AR occurred when dimensionless water particle velocity based on the surf similarity parameter was larger than about 0.32. In the moveable-bed condition, the settlement depth (field values) of the AR ranged from 6 to 30 cm. The results indicated that characteristics of the sediment/bed condition and the direction of external forces acting on an AR should be considered when selecting AR sites.

  • Stability and durability of the artificial reefs (ARs) for wildstock enhancement have been a key issue. We surveyed the side scan sonar (SSS), multi beam echo sounder (MBES) and scuba diving surveys confirmed that the ARs stability was age and type-dependent. A case of the stability of 8,438 ARs (60 group ARs) installed at 4 sites (Yangyang, Gangeung, Donghae and Samcheok) along the Gangwon coast of the East Sea (Sea of Japan). And a confirmation amount to 85.4% ARs remained safe, the rest 14.6% being influenced by a physical parameter of the waters. The representative influences by their circumstances were of breakage (6.3%). capsizing (8.3%). A group of a ARs to 61.7% ARs remained safe, the rest 38.3% being influenced by a physical parameter of the waters. The representative influences by their circumstances were of buried.

  • The current study reviews the formula used to calculate the stability of an artificial reef in the breaking wave zone of coastal waters. A comparison was carried out between the existing formula and a new formula that takes into account the water particle velocity in the breaking wave zone. Water particle velocity was analyzed using the Fluent (CADMAS-SURF) software program. The new formula took into various factors, including the difference in the drag coefficient due to the direction of the current and the ratio of distance between two reefs. The drag coefficient of the artificial reef due to the direction of the current was 0.84 when the distance ratio was 0.5. When the artificial reef was placed at 45 degree angle to the current, the product of the drag coefficient and the project area were 40 to 46 % greater than when the reef was placed at 90 degree angle. Our results regarding the stability of an artificial reef indicate that the new formula provides the designers of artificial reefs with a more rational and economic design rationale rather than the existing formula.

  • This study conducted hydraulic testing to assess the stability of two types of pyramid-shaped artificial reefs (ARs) constructed to promote the growth of shellfish and seaweed. Previous theoretical and hydraulic experimental studies have clearly demonstrated Froude similitude. The results of this study revealed that some dimensionless design parameters affected the stability of both types of artificial reefs under various wave and current field conditions (e.g., surf similarity parameters, water particle velocity, wave pressure). In the fixed bed condition, the dimensionless water particle velocity based on the surf similarity parameter was large (about 0.4), and in the moveable bed condition, the relative water depth based on the dimensionless wave pressure was low (about 0.11). In addition, horizontal wave pressure and uplift pressure varied by relative water depth, demonstrating the tendency for wave pressure to decrease linearly with increased relative depth. These findings indicate that the development of more stable design technology forartificial reefs should be based on long-term data and additional study of sliding due to wave action. The findings also highlight the importance of hydraulic experiments in solving problems that have emerged in the design and construction of artificial reefs.

  • Sediment transport around artificial habitat which is induced by the change of flow due to installation of the structure plays a role not only as a defect function of subsidence and burial but also bottom-environment control function. Using Side Scan Sonar (SSS), Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) and Scuba diving equipment, we investigated a facility condition of a dice reef installed on Pohang coast of the East Sea. Investigation result, at total 139 place, 10,526 dice reef was discovered. As the level which affects function of the above 0.5m, the case 4 place of burial (0.5~1.2m, 2.9%), scour appeared with 3 place (0.5m, 2.2%) and broken was appeared with 183 artificial reefs (1.74%). As a result, dice reef installed Pohang coast appeared to mostly stable.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the stability of the arched and fan types of artificial reefs, which provide habitats for shellfish and seaweed. According to the Froude similitude, parameters affecting the stability of the artificial reefs were analytically, experimentally studied. First, the design parameters of the artificial reefs in wave and current fields were presented. Then, using dimensionless parameters, such as the surf similarity parameter and water particle speed, the stability of the arched and fan types of artificial reefs was investigated. From the hydraulic experiments, it is shown that the stability heavily depends on the way the artificial reefs are installed. Therefore, the installation of the artificial reefs on the surf zone should be carefully executed.
