  • This study investigated the understanding level and the using level of mathematical language for middle school students in terms of Freudenthal' language levels. It was proved that the understanding level task developed by current study for geometric concept had reliability and validity, and that there was the hierarchy of levels on which students understanded mathematical language. The level that students used in explaining mathematical concepts was not interrelated to the understanding level, and was different from answering the right answer according to the sorts of tasks. And, the level of mathematical language that was understood easily as students' thought, was the third level of the understanding levels. Mathematics teachers should consider the students' understanding level and using level, and give students the tasks which students could use their mathematical language confidently.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate levels of mathematically gifted students' understanding of statistical samples through comparison with non-gifted students. For this purpose, rubric for understanding of samples was developed based on the students' responses to tasks: no recognition of a part of population (level 0), consideration of samples as subsets of population (level 1), consideration of samples as a quasi-proportional, small-scale version of population (level 2), recognition of the importance of unbiased samples (level 3), and recognition of the effect of random sampling (level 4). Based on the rubric, levels of each student's understanding of samples were identified. t tests were conducted to test for statistically significant differences between mathematically gifted students and non-gifted students. For both of elementary and middle school graders, the t tests show that there is a statistically significant difference between mathematically gifted students and non-gifted students. Table of frequencies of each level, however, shows that levels of mathematically gifted students' understanding of samples were not distributed at the high levels but were overlapped with levels of non-gifted students' understanding of samples.

  • This study was performed to identify older adults' self-reported difficulties in understanding and utilizing health information and their relationships with health status and to investigate the differences between age groups and among education levels. Data were collected from July 1 to August 31 in 2007 from older adults in senior centers located in Daegu, Kyungpook, and Busan area. A total of 103 subjects participated in the study. The level of understanding health information in older adults was 50 on average (possible score 15-75). The most difficult items to understand were patient educational materials, written information provided by health care providers, and medical forms. The lower level of difficulty in utilizing health information was associated with better physical and mental health status. There were differences in their self-reported difficulties between the young-old and the old-old as well as among different education levels. Health care providers may need to tailor educational materials and medical forms to the cognitive ability of older adults under the consideration of their age and education levels.

  • In modern society, a basic understanding of financial understanding is recognized as very important for stable economic activities. Advanced countries are operating various regular education courses and programs to improve their financial literacy, but this is not enough for Korea. Recognizing this reality, the study examined the level of financial literacy among students at K University and analyzed whether liberal accounting education could be a useful tool to improve financial literacy levels. The study found that the level of financial literacy among the students at K University after the education was conducted was very high, so it is deemed that liberal accounting education for improving financial literacy is very effective. However, there is a difference in each area by major and grade, so there is a need to develop customized education programs when preparing institutional programs to enhance financial literacy.

  • Current science education aims to guide students as future responsible citizens to make informed decisions on socioscientific issues (SSI). In the authors' previous study, it was found that conceptions of nature of technology (NOT) were explicitly represented in various contexts of SSI with differentiated levels of understanding, and cases of the informed NOT understanding included the key features of well-reasoned SSI decision-making. Therefore, enhancing NOT understanding could be one of the elements to leverage students' informed SSI decision-making. In this study, we developed a rubric to assess NOT understanding in the context of SSI and applied it to evaluate the impact of SSI instruction. Participants were 58 college students who took an SSI course for 6 weeks. Before and after the SSI course, they were asked to write decision-making essays on the Golden Rice issue (a type of genetically modified food). As a result of analyzing the pre- and post decision-making essay using the rubric, it was found that NOT understanding was improved after the SSI course; in addition, the salient patterns of NOT changes were analyzed in detail in order to gauge the influence of the SSI classes. Implications for science education were discussed.

  • In this study, we compared 8th graders' macroscopic and microscopic conceptions related to the properties of substances. A test for the basic particle concept and a test for the macroscopic and microscopic concepts of melting point, solubility, and density were developed and administered to 371 students. Their responses were classified into 4 categories on the bases of their understanding of the macroscopic and microscopic concepts. The proportions and characteristics of each category were also analyzed. The analyses of the results revealed that the students who understood the macroscopic concepts had various misconceptions at the microscopic level. Many students had difficulty in understanding not only microscopic concepts but macroscopic concepts. The microscopic responses of the students who did not understand the macroscopic concepts hardly corresponded with their macroscopic level responses. The students who responded correctly to the test for the basic particle concept also had difficulty in understanding the concept of the properties of substances. When they understood the macroscopic concepts, the proportions of the students who understood the microscopic concepts were high. On the bases of the results, educational implications for effective teaching and learning of concepts related to the properties of substances and for improving the future national curricular are discussed.
