  • Polypropylene (PP) powder/cellulose nanofibers (CNF) 1 wt% slurry composites were prepared by filtering their suspension under reduced pressure and dried them in an oven followed by the use of a twin screw extruder. PP modified with side branches and polar groups was used. The side branches and polar groups were introduced into PP by using divinylbenzene and maleic anhydride (MAH), respectively. As a result of examining the dispersibility of CNF and the physical properties of the composite, it was confirmed that the composite prepared from PP powder/CNF 1 wt% slurry showed equal or higher levels in tensile and flexural strength as compared with those using the composite prepared from CNF powder.

  • Development of pellet-type artificial diet for insect was tried by using a twin screw extruder(TSE). Screws were arranged several times and two reverse screws were equipped on the foreparts of 2 axes of TSE. Pellet-type diet could be produced successfully under conditions of TSE set as the following. : 300 rpm of main motor speed, 228 rpm of feed motor speed, $75m{\ell}/min$ of running water speed and 5 mm of extrusion diameter. The optimum adding quantity of water to the manufactured diet was $1.2{\sim}1.5$ times of dry diet. On the rearing results of beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua and common cutworm, Spedoptera litura with the pellet-type diet, the final survival ratio (emergence rate) of these two species was over than 50%, and so it was concluded that the manufactured pellet-type artificial diet was sufficient dietetically to rear those insects.

  • The recycling of waste XLPE(crosslinked polyethylene), which is a major source of scraps from high voltage power transmission cables, has been discussed. The waste XLPE scraps were ground into fine powder with various sizes from less than $100{\mu}m$ up to about $1000{\mu}m$ using two types of tailor-made pulverizers. The compounds were prepared in a modular intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder at various conditions such as different compositions, types and powder sizes of waste XLPE, screw configurations and various polymer matrices (LDPE, HDPE, PP, PS). The mechanical and rheological properties and the fracture surface or the compounds were investigated. It was found that an improved impact strength was obtained from the compound with white XLPE powder pulverized from the scraps without outer/inner semi-conductive layers. Generally, the impact strength increases with the content of XLPE but decreases with the size of XLPE. Especially for LDPE, the extrusion was possible up to 80 wt% loading of XLPE. Also, the impact strength increases with the number of kneading disc blocks in the given screw configurations. The melt viscosity of the compounds increases with increasing XLPE loading. However, the higher shear thinning behavior of the compounds at common shear rates implies proper processibility of the compounds. In addition, the impact strength for other polymer matrices used increases with XLPE and it is noticeable that the impact strength of PS/XLPE (80/20 wt%) compound was improved twice that of pure PS.

  • Mechanical properties and morphology of pectin/starch blend films depending upon the composition and plasticizer ratio were studied. Blends were prepared continuously in a twin-screw extruder. Films were prepared using a single-screw extruder with slit die. Most of the blends showed a good thermoplastic behavior, while the blends with very high ratio of pectin/starch had a poor thermoplasticity. Tensile properties of blend films were changed significantly by the amount of glycerol and relatively little by the ratio of pectin/starch. Differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) curves of wet blends showed a transition similar to glass transition temperature(Tg) at about $125^{\circ}C$. It was found by Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) study that there exists a good interfacial adhesion between pectin and starch.

  • We studied in-line monitoring the dispersion of highly energetic material simulant by a twin screw extruder having a high temperature ultrasonic system. The simulant suspension system consisted of ethylene vinyl acetate and Dechlorane plus 25 as binder and filler, respectively. With increasing filling fraction, the ultrasonic velocity was not changed but the attenuation linearly decreased. It was possible to estimate the solid fraction of well dispersed suspension system by measuring ultrasonic attenuation. The ultrasonic attenuation of samples filled over 60 v% approached straight line with increasing filling fraction when the samples was extruded repeatedly. It was due to the enhanced dispersion of solid particles in the suspension system. It was believed that the degree of dispersion and filling fraction could be obtained by combination of on-line measurement like ultrasonic attenuation and off-line analysis like TGA and SEM with image analyzer.

  • Polypropylene(PP : continuous phase)/poly (styrene-co-acrylonitrile)(SAN : dispersed phase) blends, and PP/poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS : dispersed phase)blends, containing various amounts of compatibilizer(PP-SAN graft copolymer), were prepared at various shear rates by using twin-screw extruder. In the PP/SAN blend, the average size of the dispersed particles(SAN) was increased with SAN content, while the flexural strength and tensile strength were decreased with SAN content. When the screw rpm was increased from 10 to 60 rpm, the size of the dispersed phase was decreased while the flexural strength and the tensile strength were increased. Maximum mechanical strength and minimum droplet size were observed when the 5 phr compatibilizer was added to the PP/SAN blends. The mechanical strength of PP/ABS blends such as flexural strength and tensile strength increased by adding compatibilizer was reached maximum when blends contained 5 phr compatibilizer.

  • Wood Plastic Composite(WPC) has been mostly used for outdoor purposes such as deck materials and trails so far. In this study, WPC panels with improved antibacterial properties, total volatile organic compound emissions (TVOC), and flame retardant were manufactured to use Wood Plastic Compound as interior materials for indoor use. WPC compound was prepared by mixing Chamaecyparis obtusa wood flour with high density polyethylene(HDPE). The prepared WPC compound exhibited excellent antibacterial and antifungal properties, and the total volatile organic compound emission(TVOC) was 0.062 mg/m2·h. The WPC panel(303mm×606mm×10mm) manufactured by a twin screw extruder with the manufactured compound achieved the flame retardant grade 2 standard of KS F 2271.

  • In this study, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was modified by reactive extrusion with a functional monomer GMA(glycidyl methacrylate), MMT(montmorillonite), and initiator to enhance the melt strength. Each modified PLA was prepared with different amounts of GMA and MMT and was characterized by measuring thennal- and melt-viscoelastic properties. The degree of dispersion of MMT was measured by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). The glass transition temperature($T_g$) of modified PLA-GMA-MMT nanocomposite decreased with increasing GMA content, but was a little affected by the amount of MMT. Surface analysis showed that the nanocomposite became more intercalated than exfoliated as the amount of MMT increases. The complex viscosity and storage modulus of the nano-composite were greatly increased by addition of MMT.

  • In this study, we were manufactured wood flour-HDPE composites by modular co-rotating twin screw extruder with L/D ratio of 42. We was measured cone calorimeter test and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to find the combustion characteristics and thermal properties for wood flour-HDPE composites. We then evaluated the effect of three additive-type flame retardants on fire resistance performance. The cone calorimeter test showed that the heat release rate (HRR) of untreated composites was the highest Peak HRR ($446.6kW/m^2$) as well as Mean HRR ($185.5kW/m^2$). From the TGA, it was shown that composites added flame retardants began early thermal decomposition and improved thermal stability.
