  • In order to develop stretchable substrate technology for stretchable devices, locally stiffness-variant stretchable substrates were processed with two polydimethylsiloxane elastomers of different stiffnesses and their deformation behavior was characterized. Low-stiffness substrate matrix and embedded high-stiffness island of the stretchable substrate were formed by using Dragon Skin 10 of the elastic modulus of 0.09 MPa and Sylgard 184 of the elastic modulus of 2.15 MPa, respectively. A stretchable substrate was fabricated to a configuration of 6.5 cm length, 0.4 cm thickness, and 2.5 cm width. The elastic modulus of a stretchable substrate was increased from 0.09 MPa to 0.13~0.33 MPa by embedding a Sylgard 184 island of 1 cm width and 1~6 cm length into the center part of the Dragon Skin 10 substrate matrix. The elastic modulus of a stretchable substrate was improved to 0.16~0.2 MPa by embedding a Sylgard 184 island of 4 cm length and 0.5~1.5 cm width and to 0.1421~0.154 MPa by embedding a Sylgard 184 island of 2 cm length and 0.5~1.5 cm width. With increasing the tensile strain of a stretchable substrate, deformation restriction of the locally stiffness-variant Sylgard 184 island was further enhanced due to substantial increase in the strength difference between Sylgard 184 and Dragon 10 at large strain.

  • Composite slab structures consisted with steel deck plate and concrete material show generally anisotropic structural behavior because of different stillness between the major direction and sub-direction of deck plate, and also the structures can be regarded as the laminated slab structures. It is necessary for the composite deck slab structures to carry out the exact vibration analysis to evaluate the serviceability. Also, it is needed to evaluate the exact structural behavior of composite deck slab with a layered orthotropic materials. In this paper, the thickness of lopping concrete and deck plate are used to calculate the material coefficient stiffness of a sub-direction, and an equivalent depth calculated from sectional stiffness of concrete and deck plate is applied to get the silliness of a major direction. The stiffness of two layered composite plates with different depth is determined by laminated theory. It is concluded that the presented method car efficiently analyze the structural behavior of composite deck slab consisted with steel deck plate and concrete material in the practical engineering field.

  • The objective of this paper is to assess the potential use of the geogauge and the light falling weight deflectometer (LFWD) and the soil impact hammer as quality control/quality assurance $Q_C/Q_A$ devices for compacted soil layers. A comprehensive field experimental program considering variation of number of compaction, water contents and thickness of compaction layer was conducted on compacted layers of gravel sand. The geogauge, LFWD, the soil impact hammer and static load test (PLT) as a reference test were performed for the compacted layers. The geogauge elastic modulus, $E_G$, the LFWD dynamic modulus, ELFWD, empirical soil stiffness, $K_{30}$, obtained from soil impact hammer and soil stiffness directly obtained from PLT, $K_{30}$, were correlated with increasing number of compaction. The results of this study show that the geogauge, LFWD and the soil impact hammer, which are very simple to test, can be used as substituting devices for static PLT which is a conventional quality control/quality assurance $Q_C/Q_A$ devices for compacted soil layers.

  • It is generally considered that differences of axial stiffness between exiting pile and reinforcing pile affect the load distribution ratio during vertical extension remodeling. But there are few cases to verify the effect of stiffness by field load test on load distribution ratio in Korea. In this paper, a series of load tests for micropiles were carried out to evaluate the effect of axial stiffness on the load distribution ratio. First, different types of micropiles were constructed so that conventional micropiles simulated existing piles and waveform micropiles simulated reinforcing piles. Secondly, load tests were performed to evaluate the stiffness of each piles. After then, the raft was installed to make a piled raft system and load tests were applied on foundation to verify the effect of axial stiffness on the load distribution ratio. The experimental results show that the stiffness of waveform micropiles were 2.5 times larger than that of conventional micropiles, and the load distribution ratio between existing and reinforcing piles was increased according to axial stiffness of piles.

  • In recent years, the development of complex urban areas has become saturated and much attention has been focused on the development of underground space, and deep excavation is frequently performed in order to increase the utilization of underground space due to the enlargement of buildings and the high rise of buildings. Therefore, in this study, we tried to understand the behavior of the braced wall and the behavior of the tunnel adjacent to the wall according to the stiffness of the wall and the distance between the tunnel and wall. As a result of the study, the deformation of the braced wall tended to decrease with increasing the stiffness of the wall, and the axial force acting on the struts was also different according to the stiffness of braced wall. When the stiffness of the braced wall is small (2 mm), the point at which the axial force of the braces maximizes is near 0.3H of the wall. When the stiffness of the braced wall is large (5 mm), the axial force is maximum at around 0.7H of the wall. Also, the tunnel convergence occurred more clearly when the separation distance from the braced wall was closer, the stiffness of the wall was smaller, and the tunnel convergence was concentrated to the lower right part. The ground settlement due to the excavation of the ground tended to decrease as the distance between tunnel and braced wall was closer to that of the tunnel, which is considered to be influenced by the stiffness of the tunnel.

  • In this study, pile load tests have been carried out to develop new P-y curves and then, to investigate the effects of pile rigidities on laterally loaded offshore drilled shafts in Incheon marine clay. This paper consists mainly of two parts: the first part, performance of a series of lateral load tests on small- and full-scale piles under one- and two-way loadings and the second part, comparison between the measured and predicted results by using O'Neill's and Matlock's clay models. Based on the results obtained, it is shown that relatively good agreements in bending moments and lateral displacements were obtained between the measured results using calculated P-y curves and predicted ones by O'Neill's and Matlock's clay models. The cases were considered with varying rigidity factors based on pile diameter, length and subgrade soil reaction. Through comparisons, it is found that soil P-y curve influences highly the behavior of flexible pile rather than that of rigid pile.

  • The purpose of this study is to recommend the simulation method and procedure of behaviors of CFRD(Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam) concrete face slab with impoundment by centrifuge tests, to examine the effects of the flexural rigidity of the concrete face slab on the face slab deformation from the centrifuge tests, and to evaluate the effects of the stiffness of face supporting zone on the displacement and moment of face slab by numerical analysis which is verified by the centrifuge tests. In this study, the centrifuge tests on the two model dams with the concrete face slab of different flexural rigidity were carried out. Also, the centrifuge tests were simulated by numerical analysis of which input material properties were obtained by the triaxial tests on the model materials. The validity of numerical analysis was evaluated by comparison between the results of centrifuge tests and numerical simulation. The deformation pattern of the concrete face slab was examined with the various stiffness of the face supporting zone by numerical analysis. From the results of centrifuge tests, the effects of face slab thickness on the deformation of face slab were negligible. From the results of centrifuge tests and numerical analysis, it was found that the amplitude of the maximum displacement of face slab and the position where the maximum displacement was mobilized with impoundment were affected by the stiffness of face supporting zone rather than the flexural rigidity of concrete face slab.

  • Web openings of large beams provide space for wiring, piping, and duct work to provide for proper drainage, pipes and duct must be slightly sloped with the attendant result that all web openings can not be centered on the centroidal axes of the beams. Test specimens are made for opening-depth to beam-depth ratio of 0.5 and for eccentricities of the opening center line of 10% from middepth of the beam because of the proximity of the opening edge to the flange. In this paper, available test results and theories relating to the strength of composite beams having eccentric rectangular openings are surveyed and experiments were carried out to examine the structural behaviors. In all the tests in this paper good agreement is demonstrated with maximum loads measured in tests, and observed failure modes Furthermore, compared with analytical values and experimental values of interaction diagram between moment and shear capacity were safed as it is scattered with outer part of the analytical values.

  • Damages of the main engine aftmost bearing and the after stern tube bearing tend to increase due to misalignment. And as the shafting system becomes stiffer due to the large engine power, whereas the hull structure becomes more flexible due to optimization by using high tensile thin steel plates. And this is the reason that more sophisticated shaft alignments are required. In this study, the optimum shafting alignment calculation was carried out, considering the thermal expansion effect, exploiting the sensitivity index, which indicates the reasonable position of forward intermediate shaft bearing for shaft alignment. and as the main subject in this study, the elastic deformation on intermediate shaft and main engine bearings occurred by vertical load of shaft mass were examined thoroughly and analyzed allowable load of bearings, reaction influence numbers of all bearings. As the result, a reliable optimum shafting alignment was derived theoretically. To verify these results, they were referred to the engine maker's technical information of main engine installation and being used shafting alignment programs of both Korean Register of Shipping and Det Norske Veritas, their reliability were reviewed.
