  • In this paper, experimental test on the full scale model of steel and concrete composite plate girder with prefabricated slabs under hogging moments was conducted cautiously and observed in order to study cracking in precast decks. Details of prefabricated slab transverse joints were determined from previous research. A test specimen was overhanging simple support beam, totally 28 meter length. Through the 4-point flexural test, the behaviour of the composite girder under hogging moments was observed. From the test results, crack development and crack widths were observed.

  • In domestic composite bridges, it has been reported that most failure is occurred in deck and the type of failure was mainly punching shear failure. Therefore to increase a life of bridges and reduce maintenance costs, an improvement of a durability of slabs is needed. In these respects, precast deck can be very useful. In a composite bridge with precast decks, it is required to notice behavior of transverse joints between decks. In this paper, bending tests of precast deck with loop joints were conducted. From the results, the validity of loop joints for continuity of deck was observed and especially an interval of loop joint, diameter of loop and reinforcement were checked.

  • In this paper weld distortion both in butt and fillet welds by flux cored arc welding has been investigated by changing welding parameters such as heat input and plate thickness, and the weld distortion was expressed as a function of welding parameters adopting the inherent strain theory as proposed by Watanabe and Satoh in 1961. As results of the research it is proposed that transverse shrinkage in root pass butt welds in proportional to ln[(Q/t_-tan.theta.] where Q is heat input(cal/mm), t is plate thickness(mm), and 2.theta. is groove angle(degree), and angular distortion .phi.(radian) in one pass of fillet welds has the following relationship: .phi..var.(Q/ $t^{1.5}$)$^{3}$exp[-(Q/ $t^{1.5}$ )$^{2}$3/] These equations provide us with basic tools to predict the amount of weld distortion in welded structures.

  • Localized corrosions damages in their structural sections can be occurred affected by installed environment conditions with high temperature as near the coastline and humidity or their poor maintenance situation. In bearing supports of steel bridges, especially, lower web and vertical stiffener in end girder support can be easily corroded because of relatively higher humidity due to the narrow space in the end of girder and the wetted accumulated sediments affected by rain water or antifreezing admixture leaked from expansion joint. It can be related to change in their structural performance. In this study, thus, bearing strength test specimens were fabricated considering corrosion damage in the web and vertical stiffeners and the change in their bearing strengths were experimentally evaluated. From the test results, localized corrosion damage of structural members in the end girder affected the bearing strength of end girder support, especially, localized corrosion damage of the vertical stiffener relatively highly affected their bearing strengths.

  • Compressive strength of concrete compression members strengthend with carbon fiber laminate(CFL) were studied from the test results. Test parameters are spacing, thickness, width, ply and spliced length of carbon fiber laminates. Specimens strength with sheets failed with sudden tensile rupture of the laminate, which indicate very brittle failure mode. Test result shows that closer spacing and to increas thickness of CFL is more effective. But strengthening ratio with 1-ply CFL is more effective than that of specimen with 2-ply CFL. Compressive strength capacity of specimen splied 24cm shows almost similar strength to that of non-spliced specimen. The ultimate load carrying of specimen strengthened with CFL ranges 1.11~1.86 times of that of non-strengthened specimen.

  • The use of steel plates has been greatly increased in bridge construction, particularly for long-span bridges. For connections of those steel plates in the field, application of high-tension bold, such as M30, is highly demanded. However, the current steel construction specifications in Korea do not provide information for large-sized bolt connections. In order to evaluate the applicability of the large-sized high-tension bolt, this study experimentally investigates relaxation and slip behavior of M30 bolts with varying bolt size and plate thickness. In addition, internal compressive stress was computed using FEM analysis. The analyzed results were compared with the stress distribution measured from strain gages attached on bolts and bolt holes. From the study presented herein, the M30 high-tension bolts are anticipated to be successfully used with the relaxation less than 10% and the slip coefficient satisfying the specified limit.

  • Recently, the safety of the coal-mining tunnels has been improved greatly, but accidents occur continually. Most tunnel support failures occur because the fish plate part that connects the I-beams is unable to withstand ground pressure. In the case of XX coal mine, the arch part of tunnel support bends to the upper direction. In such a case, excessive horizontal load as well as vertical load acts on the tunnel support. Horizontal load is caused by the sudden loosing of underground rock mass or the leakage of underground water, so it is fairly complex to predict horizontal loading on a tunnel support. To predict the horizontal load on this component is defined as the problem that determines the horizontal load conditions in wedges of tunnel support. This is an optimization problem in which maximum bending stress and horizontal load are considered by an objective function and design variables, respectively. Therefore, in this study, design of experiments and optimization algorithm were applied to identify the horizontal load in tunnel support.

  • The tension type joint is a mechanically very efficient connection method, as it directly uses the load capacity of base metal or high tension bolt, the reduction of the number of drilling hole and fastening and the fatigue resistance. It is applied to the joint of girder and cross beam, horizontal joints of towers, beam to column joints, the secondary member joints of deck floor ends, and brackets. In this paper, static load tests for the T-type tension joint were conducted to investigate the structural behavior of the joint. The parameters were bolt diameter, flange thickness, and the reduction of clamping force of the joint. The failure modes and load capacity of joints and the effects of flange thickness, bolt diameter and clamping force were investigated.

  • This paper is concerned with a combination of experimental and analytical investigation aimed at identifying modeling errors, accounted for the lack of correlation between experimental measurements and analytical predictions of the modal parameters for lap joint panels. A nonlinearity vibration test methodology, initiated from the theoretical analysis, is suggested for measurements of dynamic stiffnesses in a lap joint using the rivet fastener. Based on the experimental evidence on discrepancies between measured and predicted frequencies, improved finite element models of the joint are developed using PATRAN and ABAQUS, in which the beam element size is evaluated from the joint stiffnesses readily determined in the test. The beam element diameter as a principal design parameter is tuned to match experimental results within the evaluated bound value. Frequencies predicted by the proposed numerical model are compared with frequencies measured by the test. Improved predictions based on this new model are observed when compared with those based on conventional modeling practices.
