  • Two cases of benign mediastinal tumor were treated by complete resection under the video-thoracoscopic guidance. The procedure has been performed on the 2 patients, allowing definite treatment and was less invasive than standard surgical treatment. The 2 patients have been benefited by decreased postoperative pain, reduced scarring of the skin and rapid recovery. Two patients had benign mediastinal tumors; teratodermoid on anterior mediastinum and neurilemmoma on posterior mediastinum. There were no operative death and complication, median hospital stay was four days.

  • Studies were carried out with specimens collected throughout the country during $1984{\sim}1986$, and preserved specimens kept in the Insect Museum within the Dept. of Agricultural Biology, College of Agriculture, Seoul Nat'l Univ., and the Dept. of Entomol., Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Suweon, Korea. As the result of this study, 10 species and 1 subspecies are presented here with a key and descriptions. Among them, 7 species and 1 subspecies are already reported by others, while the rest 3 species (Agrypnus setigera, A. miyamotoi, A. hyponicola) are reported here for the first time in Korea.

  • Three species belonging to genera Acaphylla Keifer and Calacarus Keifer (Prostigmata: Eriophyidae) that cause damage to Camellia (Theaceae) plants, have been newly recorded in Korea. The three species, Acaphylla theae (Watt), Acaphylla theavagrans Kadono, and Calacarus carinatus (Green), have been redescribed and illustrated. Keys to Korean species of the genus Acaphylla; their distribution; and biological information, such as host plants and damage symptoms, are also presented.

  • Mushrooms growing in the Wolchulsan National Park were surveyed from April to October 2018. As a result of this survey, 2 divisions, 9 classes, 24 orders, 71 families, 177 genera, and 407 species were found. Among them, 3 classes, 16 orders, 55 families, 150 genera, and 370 species belonged to Basidiomycota, while 6 classes, 8 orders, 16 families, 27 genera, and 37 species belonged to Ascomycota. The species richness was the highest in September at the altitudes between ~100 and 200 m. Among the investigated sites, the most diverse species occurred in the Gyeongpodae area. In this survey we found, Macrolepiota procera, Suillus bovinus, and Amanita pantherina, all of which have been known as climate-sensitive biological indicator species (CBIS). Based on the DNA sequence analyses, Craterellus parvogriseus was confirmed as a new record for Korea.

  • We collected fishes at the 12,873 sites in stream order (1~7) from 2008 to 2016. In the results, two populations(Zacco platypus and Zacco koreanus) represented distributional differences in the stream order gradient, and correlation analysis showed that the two populations had a potential competitive relationship. The ecological characteristics of the fish except for the Z. platypus and the Z. koreanus, according to the gradient of stream order showed a pronounced gradient in the species such as intermediate species, sensitive species, carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. The two populations showed a high correlation between intermediate species, sensitive species of the tolerance guild and omnivores, insectivores of the trophic guild. Fish assessment index (FAI) was negative relation with stream order. According to the stream order gradient, the two populations showed different correlations with FAI.

  • The Baekdudaegan Mountain Range is home to a wide range of organisms inhabiting the Korean Peninsula. This study monitored butterfly communities of Guryongryeong (Myeonggye-ri) and Gojingkyeong (Seobyeok-ri) from April to September in 2013 to 2014, and the results were compared with previous data to determine changes in their distribution. We found 1,098 butterflies of 65 different species in Myeonggye-ri, and 1,161 butterflies of 63 different species in Seobyeok-ri. Comparing the two regions, 13 species appeared only in Seobyeok-ri and 15 species appeared only in Myeonggae-ri. When species were ranked according to number of individuals, the top species three species were as follows: Artogeia melete (127, 11.6%), A. napi (100, 9.1%), and Papilio maackii (90, 8.2%) in Myeonggye-ri; and Libythea celtis (146, 12.6%), A. napi (134, 11.5%), and Polygonia c-aureum (69, 5.9%) in Seobyeok-ri. The number of species with fewer than three individuals each was 24 in Myeonggye-ri and 23 in Seobyeok-ri, accounting for a high percentage among the total number of species. The similarities between the two regions were relatively high, and many of the butterflies are on the Red List of Korea. Compared with previous distribution data, there were no significant changes. This consistency indicates that the butterflies of the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range have been conserved well, and therefore the continuity in the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range is necessary to keep in the big picture.
