  • Characteristics of advective-diffusive transport of inorganic chemicals in clayey soils as well as in two hardened barrier materials of silica and lime are analyzed from the laboratory column test and compared with those of pure diffusive column test. The results show that the average dispersion coefficients of three materials are $4.39\times l0^{-10}\textrm{m}^2 /s,\; 1.98\times l0^{-10}\textrm{m}^2 /s,\; 1.99\times l0^{-10}\textrm{m}^2 /s$, respectively, and the value of clay is higher than that of hardened barrier materials. There was no significant difference between the dispersion coefficients of advective-diffusive column tests and the effective diffusion coefficients from the pure diffusive column tests, if advective velocity was lower than l0$^{-7}$$m^2$/s. The range of dispersion coefficients of advective-diffusive column tests was narrower than that of diffusion coefficients of pure diffusion tests.

  • We propose a Cubic-Interpolated Pseudo-Particle Lattice Boltzmann method (CIP-LBM) for the convection-diffusion equation (CDE) based on the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) scheme equation. The CIP-LBM relies on an accurate numerical lattice equilibrium particle distribution function on the advection term and the use of a splitting technique to solve the Lattice Boltzmann equation. Different schemes of lattice spaces such as D1Q3, D2Q5, and D2Q9 have been used for simulating a variety of problems described by the CDE. All simulations were carried out using the BGK model, although another LB scheme based on a collision term like two-relation time or multi-relaxation time can be easily applied. To show quantitative agreement, the results of the proposed model are compared with an analytical solution.

  • In this study, estimation of nonlinear adsorption isotherms(Langmuir & Freundlich adsorption isotherm) and advection-dispersion model parameters was conducted using genetic algorithm(GA) for Zn and Cd adsorption. Estimated parameters of nonlinear adsorption isotherms, which were obtained from the optimization process using genetic algorithm(GA), are nearly same with the parameters obtained from a linearization process of the nonlinear isotherms. Estimated effective diffusion coefficients, which were obtained from a finite element analysis of the advection-dispersion model and an optimization procedure using the genetic algorithm, for the metals were approximately in the order of $10^{-7}cm^2/s$ which could be obtained based on the linear distribution coefficient. The effective diffusion coefficients based on the nonlinear retardation factors were in the range of $10^{-6}{\sim}10^{-5}cm^2/s$. As a result, the correlation coefficient obtained between the measured and calculated concentration was over 0.9 which means that the genetic algorithm should be successfully applied to estimate the unknown parameters of the nonlinear adsorption isotherms and advection-dispersion model.

  • In underground spaces including nuclear waste repository, prediction of air quantity, temperature/humidity and pollutant concentration is utmost important for space construction and management during the normal state as well as for determining the measures in emergency cases such as underground fires. This study aims at developing a model for underground space environment which has capabilities to take into account the effects of autocompression for the natural ventilation head calculation, to find the optimal location and size of fans and regulators, to predict the temperature and humidity by calculating the convective heat transfer coefficient and the sensible and latent heat transfer rates, and to estimate the pollutant levels throughout the network. The temperature/humidity prediction model was applied to a military storage underground space and the relative differences of dry and wet temperatures were 1.5 ~ 2.9% and 0.6 ~ 6.1%, respectively. The convection-based pollutant transport model was applied to two different vehicle tunnels. Coefficients of turbulent diffusion due to the atmospheric turbulence were found to be 9.78 and 17.35$m^2$/s, but measurements of smoke and CO concentrations in a tunnel with high traffic density and under operation of ventilation equipment showed relative differences of 5.88 and 6.62% compared with estimates from the convection-based model. These findings indicate convection is the governing mechanism for pollutant diffusion in most of the tunnel-type spaces.

  • Numerical simulations on the suspended sediment transport in the Nakdong Estuary are carried out Uncoupled flow model and diffusion model of which the governing equations are two-dimensional depth integrated equations are used int his study. Four cases are tested in this numerical simulations in which the Gaduk waterway open boundary condition and Nakdong Estuary barrage boundary condition are considered as the boundary conditions. The simulated results are compared with the measured data which were obtained by NEDECO at hadan site on 1981.2.19. and by Dong-A university at one station in the study area on 1993.4.3. and show a good agreement with them. The construction of the Nakdong Estuary Barrage may affect to reduce the current near Jinudo an Daemadeung and the suspended sediment inflowed from the upstream in the wet season seems to be transported to the Dadae.

  • In order to analyze the density current due to salt and temperature difference, this study develops new numerical model (LES-WASS-3D ver. 2.0) by introducing state equation for salt and temperature and 3D advection-diffusion equation to existing 3D numerical wave tank (LES-WASS-3D ver. 1.0). To verify the applicability, the newly-developed numerical model is analyzed comparing to the experimental result of existing numerical model. In the result, it well implement the behavior and vertical salt concentration of advected and diffused seawater as well as flow velocity and temperature of the discharged warm water. This confirms the validity and effectiveness of the developed numerical model.

  • The effects of the selection for sediment transport equations and advection-diffusion equations according to different sediment transport modes on the modeling results of bed changes were analyzed using the CCHE2D and compared with field data in this paper. The most suitable sediment transport equation and sediment transport mode for advection-diffusion equation were suggested for the upstream approached channel of the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage. The bed changes simulated by the Engelund and Hansen formula were very small in the modeling case for the low and high flow discharges compared with the case of the Ackers and White formula. Also, the numerical modeling with the actual hydraulic event in 2002 presents that the bed change result with the bed load transport type for advection-diffusion equation was close to the field measurement more than the suspended load type.
