  • Concrete structures exposed to fire produce changes in their internal structure, resulting in their service life reduction due to the deterioration of its strength and performance capacity. The deterioration level are dependent on the temperature, exposure time, concrete mix proportions, aggregate property, and material properties. This study was performed to evaluate the thermal behavior of ultra-high strength concrete for the parameters of water to cement ratio (compressive strength), fine to total aggregate ratio, and maximum coarse aggregate size. At room temperature and $500^{\circ}C$, tests of ultrasonic pulse velocity, resonance frequency, static modulus of elasticity, and compressive strength are performed using ${\varnothing}100{\times}200\;mm$ cylindrical concrete specimens. The results showed that the residual mechanical properties of ultra-high strength concrete heated to $500^{\circ}C$ is influenced by variation of a water to binder ratio, fine to total aggregate ratio, and maximum coarse aggregate size.

  • Fiber is an important ingredient in strain-hardening cementitious composite (SHCC), which can control fracture of cementitious composite by bridging action. The properties of reinforcing fiber, as tensile strength, aspect ratio and elastic modulus, have great effect on the fracture behavior of SHCC. To apply SHCC to structural member, SHCC must have economical efficiency and workability as well as own excellent tensile performance. For these purposes, four-point bending and direct tensile tests on SHCC with only hybrid synthetic fibers, total fiber volume fraction, $V_f$, is 1.5%, are carried out. The research emphasis is on the mechanical properties of SHCC made in Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and Polyethylene (PE) fibers, and how this affects the composite property, and ultimately its strain-hardening performance. Also, effect of hybrid type and water-cement ratio on the behavior of SHCC was evaluated in this paper.

  • In this study, crosslinked poly(POEM-co-AMPSLi-co-GMA)s were prepared by epoxy coupling of GMA after radical copolymerization of AMPS, POEM and GMA followed by acid-base titration reaction between sulfonic acid of AMPS and $Li_2CO_3$. It was observed that the crystalline melting temperature of POEM was effected by mol% of components and shifted to lower value by lithiation of AMPS group. The ionic conductivity of crosslinked polymer electrolyte was decreased by addition of GMA but maintained over $1.0{\times}10^{-6}S\;cm^{-1}$ until 16 mol%. Particularly, the self-doped polymer electrolyte with 2 mol% of GMA showed its ionic conductivity as high as $4.08{\times}10^{-6}S\;cm^{-1}$ at room temperature and electrochemical stability up to 6 V. In addition, 0.11 MPa of modulus and 270% of elongation were obtained from the free standing film of crosslinked polymer electrolyte.

  • This paper focused on square steel tubular column to H-beam connections (concrete filled tubular) with an outside-type diaphragm. Based on the yield line theory and the nonlinear static FEM analysis the specification equations were evaluated by comparing them with previous result of the simplified tensile experiment[please check. The yield line theory applied to the mechanical model theory revised by K. Morita, the nonlinear static FEM analysis using abaqus/standard, the ultimate strength equation in the specification equation using the factor for long-time loading, and the yield ratio according to material. The allowable strength in the specification equations applied the safety factors of 2.2 and 2.6 in the cases with and without filled concrete, respectively. Therefore, the evaluation of strength(for the previous result of the simplified tensile experiment in this study) was considered possible through the yield line theory, the nonlinear static FEM analysis, and the specification equations. Likewise, the specification equations were seen to be an underestimate of the previous result of the simplified tensile experiment. The strength and displaced mesh in the FEM analysis approximated the previous result of the simplified tensile experiment.

  • In general typically granular soils contain a certain amount of fines. It is also widely recognized that foundation soils under working loads show highly non-linear behavior from very early stages of loading. In the present study, a series of laboratory tests with sands of different silt contents are conducted and methods to assess strength and stiffiness characteristics are proposed. Modified hyperbolic stress-strain model is used to analyze non-linearity of silty sands in terms of non-linear Degradation parameters f and g as a function of silt contents and Relative density Dr. Stress-strain curves were obtained from a series of triaxial tests on sands containing different amounts of silt. Initial shear modulus, which is used to normalize Degradation modulus of silty sands, was determined from resonant column test results. From the laboratory test results, it was observed that, as the Relative density increases, values of f decrease and those of g increase. In addition, it was found that values of f and g increase and decrease respectively as a Skeleton void ratio $(e_{sk})$ increases.

  • In the stretchable electronic devices, the stretchable substrate is a very essential material which determines the stretchability, performances and durability of the stretchable electronic devices. In particular, the current stretchable materials have hysteresis making difficult to used as sensors and other electronic devices. In this study, we developed a PDMS-Ecoflex hybrid stretchable substrate mixed with PDMS and Ecoflex material in order to increase stretchability and improve hysteresis characteristics. Mechanical behavior of the hybrid substrate was evaluated using a tensile test, and optical transmittance of the hybrid substrate was also measured. As the content of Ecoflex increases, the PDMS-Ecoflex hybrid substrate becomes more flexible, and the elastic modulus decreases. In addition, the PDMS substrate failed a tensile strain of 270%, while the PDMS-Ecoflex hybrid substrate did not fail even at 500% strain indicating excellent stretchability. In the repeated tensile test, the hybrid substrate with 2:1 mixing ratio of PDMS and Ecoflex showed hysteresis. On the other hand, in the case of the hybrid substrate with the mixing ratio of 1:1, hysteresis did not occur at a strain of 50% and 100%. Hence, we developed a stretchable substrate with over 150% stretchability and no hysteresis characteristics. The optical transmittance of the Ecoflex substrate was 68.6%, whereas the transmittances of the hybrid substrate with mixing ratio of 2:1 and 1:1 were 78.6% and 75.4%, respectively. These results indicate that the PDMS-Ecoflex hybrid substrate is a potential candidate for a transparent stretchable substrate.

  • The objective of the research stated herein is to observe the actual responses of a low-rise nonseismic moment-resisting reinforced concrete frame subjected to varied levels of earthquake ground motions. First, the reduction scale for the model was determined as 1 : 5 considering the capacity of the shaking table to be used and the model was manufactured according to the similitude law. This model was, then, subjected to the shaking table motions simulating Taft N21E component earthquake ground motions, whose peak ground accelations (PGAs) were modified to 0.12g, 0.2g, 0.3g, and 0.4g. The lateral accelerations and displacements at each story and local deformations at the critical reginos of the structure were measured. The base shear was measured by using self-made load cells. Before and after each earthquake simulation test, free vibration tests were performed to find the change in the natural period and damping ratio of the model. The test data on the global and local behaviors are interpreted. The model showed the linear elastic behavior under the Taft N21E motion with the PGA if 0.12g, which represents the design earthquake in Korea. The maximum base shear was 1.8tf, approximately 4.7 times the design base shear. The model revealed fairly good resistance to the higher level of earthquake simulation tests. The main components of its resistance to the high level of earthquakes appeared to be 1) the high overstrength, 2) the elongation of the fundamental period, and 3) the minor energy dissipation by inelastic deformations. The drifts of the model under these tests were approximately within the allowable limit.

  • This paper deals with the characterics of the stability of uncontinuous plate structures with cracks. The relation between the J-intergal of the cracks existing in the stress-concentrated regions and local strain are investigated experimentally and theoretically. The BEM(boundary element method)analysis and test results lead to the follow conclusions: 1. A non-dimensional J was computed in a plate stress and strain condition for several kind of loads and crack types. The J design curves are defined as follows: J sub(E)/$\sigma$ sub(y) super(2) a=3.345(e/e sub(y) ) super(2) at e/e sub(y)$\leq$1 J sub(E)/$\sigma$ sub(y) super(2) a=3.345(e/e sub(y) ) at e/e sub(y)$\geq$1 2. Use of this curve provides a good estimation for the uncontinuous plate structures with cracks existing in the stress and strain concentrated region. 3. The stability of the characteristics is mainly depenent upon not the length of cracks but the type of the cracks.

  • Jurassic granite from Pocheon area were tested to investigate the effect of microcracks on mechanical properties of the granite. Three oriented core specimens were used for uniaxial compressive tests and each core specimen are perpendicular to the axes'R'(rift plane),'c'(grain plane) and'H'(hardway plane), respectively Among vacious elastic constants, the variation of Poisson's ratio as function of the directions was examined. From the related chart between ratio of failure strength and Poisson's ratio, H-specimen shows the highest range in Poisson's ratio and Poisson's ratio decreases in the order of C-specimen and R-specimen. The curve pattern is nearly linear in stage $I\simIII$ but the slope increases abruptly in stage H-3. As shown in the related chart, diverging point of a curve is formed when ratio of failure strength is $0.92\sim0.96$ Stage IV -3 is out of elastic region. The behaviour of rock in the four fracturing stages was analyzed in term of the stress-volumetric strain me. From the stress increment-volumetric strain equations governing the behaviour of rock, characteristic material constants, a, n, Q, m and $\varepsilon_v^{mcf}$, were determined. Among these, inherent microcrack porosity$(a, 10^{-3})$ and compaction exponent(n) in the microcrack closure region(stage I ) show an order of $a^R(3.82)>a^G(3.38)>a^H(2.32)\;and\;n^R(3.69)>n^G(2.79)>n^H(1.99)4, respectively. Especially, critical volumetric microcrack strain($\varepsilon_v^{mcf}$) in the stage W is highest in the H-specimen, normal to the hardway plane. These results indicate a strong correlation between two major sets of microcracks and mechanical properties such as Poisson's ratio and material constants. Correlation of strength anisotropy with microcrack orientation can have important application in rock fracture studies.
