This study is on the denitrification process using the sodium alginate and $CaCl_2$ as a flocculant. Removal techniques of nitrate nitrogen from waste water are reverse osmosis, ion exchange, electro dialysis and biological method etc. We tried to remove nitrate nitrogen with flocculation and sedimentation method in the present study. Calcium alginate is expected to form a chelate bond with nitrate nitrogen in the solution. So the effects of flocculantt component, flocculation reaction time, molar ratio of the flocculant, flocculant injection rate are studied to determine the best removal rate of nitrate nitrogen. In addition, we tried to determine the nitrate nitrogen removal mechanism by analyzing the structure and component ratio of the configuration after the agglutination precipitate by FE-SEM and EDS. As a result, the nitrate nitrogen removal mechanism is turned out to form calcium-nitro-alginate, and the best mole ratio of flocculating agent is 1 : 1, the injection rate of the flocculant was up to 2%, the removal rate of the nitrate nitrogen to be 56.7% in the synthetic wastewater.

This study was conducted to remove fluorine (F) (initial concentration of 9.5 mg/L) from leachate of reclaimed mine waste dump site via different methods: (1) co-precipitation using Ca-based materials; (2) adsorption using activated carbon and fly ash; and (3) coagulation and sedimentation using alum. The F removal efficiencies of each case were estimated as 65.6% (Ca co-precipitation), 27.9% (adsorption of activated carbon), 71.5% (adsorption of fly ash), and 96.6% (alum coagulation and sedimentation). In addition, the applicability of the continuous treatment process using alum coagulation was evaluated by lab-scale experiments using simulated mine drainage containing F of lower (6.4 mg/L) and higher (15.7 mg/L) concentrations, and it was confirmed that the treatment of both cases met the domestic standard (below 3 mg/L) for discharged water in clean areas. Furthermore, the results of bench-scale field tests indicated that the water quality standard of discharged water could be satisfied with the proper operation and management of the process.

Coagulation and precipitation process by using lime$(Ca(OH)_2)$ and calcium carbonate $(CaCO_3)$ were applied to remove heavy metals from groundwater in laboratory scale. From results of batch tests, by the addition of $0.3\;wt.\%$ lime, more than $90\%$ of As and Mn were removed and $70-80\%$ of Cd and Zn were removed by using $0.5\;wt.\%$ of lime. Removal efficiency of Pb almost reached $100\%$ with only $0.1\;wt.\%$ of calcium carbonate and more than $93\%$ of Cd were removed by the addition of $0.1\;wt.\%$of calcium carbonate. Pilot scale column experiments were performed to remove heavy metals in the separation process of precipitated Hoc to supernatant after the coagulation/ precipitation. For lime as a coagulant, more than $99\%$of As were removed from artificial groundwater and removal efficiencies of Cd, Mn, and Zn were over $80\%$. By using calcium carbonate, more than $95\%$ of Cd and Pb were removed in column experiment. Fe and Mn contaminated groundwater taken from a real landfill site, Ulsan was used for the column experiment and more than $99\%$ of Fe and Mn were removed by the addition of $1\;wt.\%$ lime in column experiment, suggesting that the coagulation/precipitation process by using lime and calcium carbonate have a great possibility to remove heavy metals from contaminated groundwater.
Compared to other industries, pulp and paper industry use a lot of water. As a result, a large amount of the waste water is discharged in the pulp and paper industry. This study was investigated to prevent the environmental pollution terribly faced with our society nowadays. In the waste water of pulp and paper, there are so many things in the waste water, like fiber, filler, and other organic solvent etc. so we must remove them from our environment. This study was investigated to experiment on test of impressed filtration with the kind and quantity of coagulant and the variance of pressure. In this study, we used feds, alums. $CaCl_2$, polymer as a coagulant and these pressure was 49, 98, 147, 196kpa. According to this study, we measured the speed of filtration and turbidity, measuring filtrated water. According to the values, we know the fact that as the consistency of coagulant and pressure were high, the filtration was good.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of coagulants and solid-liquid separation methods on algal removal in water treatment processes. Thus characterization of raw water quality in terms of turbidity. UV-254, $KMnO_4$ consumption, chlorophyll-a and correlation analysis of these parameters were conducted. In addition, the effect of commercial Al-based coagulants(Alum. PAC and PACS) on algal removal was studied by turbidity and organic removal, algal species removal, characteristic of pH drop and alkalinity consumption using laboratory jar tests. Organic components including UV-254, $KMnO_4$ consumption, chlorophyll-a in case of algal bloom were highly correlated with turbidity and the correlation coefficients of UV-254, $KMnO_4$ consumption, chlorophyll-a with turbidity were 0.775, 0674 and 0.623, respectively. In coagulation and sedimentation, the Al-based coagulants showed similar efficiency of organic and turbidity removal in low organic($KMnO_4$ consumption below 15mg/l) and low turbidity(below 30NTU). However, PAC and PACS showed better algal removal than alum in high organic concentration($KMnO_4$ consumption above 20mg/l) and high turbidity(above 100NTU) raw water conditions generated by high algal growth, which is considered to be due to the floc settleability. In comparison of sedimentation and flotation after chemical coagulation and flocculation, the removal efficiency of organic and turbidity were higher in case of alum dose with flotation than with sedimentation, while those were better in case or PAC and PACS with sedimentation than with flotation. Thus, Alum with flotation and PAC and PACS with sedimentation is recommended for efficient algal removal. The dominant phytoplankton in raw water were Microcystic and pediastrum simplex and the removal efficiency of algae with sedimentation using alum. PAC and PACS were 27%, 45% and 22% respectively, while those with DAF showed 100% removal of phytoplankton and zooplankton.

As a fundamental study to apply the new flocculation method using ballast in water treatment process, the optimal conditions for general and ballast coagulant dosage, and pH, which are known to have a significant influence, were derived by response surface methodology. Poly aluminum chloride (PAC) and magnetite ballast were used as a general coagulant and ballast, respectively. Coagulation experiments were performed by jar-tester using the kaolin based synthetic water. The effects of three independent variables (pH, PAC, and ballast) on response variables (turbidity removal rate and average settling velocity of flocs) and the optimum condition of independent variables to induce the optimum flocculation were obtained by 17 experimental conditions designed by Box-Behnken procedure. After performing experiments, the quadratic regression model was derived for each of response variables, and the response surface analysis was conducted to explore the correlation between independent variables and response variables. The $R^2$ values for the turbidity removal rate and the average settling velocity were 0.9909 and 0.8295, respectively. The optimal conditions of independent variables were 7.4 of pH, 38 mg/L of PAC and 1,000 mg/L of ballast. Under these conditions, the turbidity removal rate was more than 97% and the average settling velocity exceeded 35 m/h.
Homogeneous precipitation of $Y^{3+}$ with urea has been studied in order to investigate the effect of urea concentration on the preparation of monodispersed colloidal "Yttrium Hydroxycarbonate $(Y(OH)CO_3 \cdot nH_2O)$". As the initial concentration of urea increased, the mean size of colloidal precipitates decreased, and the rate of precipitation of $Y^{3+}$ increased. When the initial concentration of urea was higher than $4.0 \sim 7.0 M$, precipitates obtained were no more monodispersed colloidal particles, but coagulated big particles; and, although the initial concentration of urea increased over 4.0 M, the rate of precipitation did not increased. It is important to decide the proper initial concentration of urea, because excessive urea can cause the environmental problems such as water pollution.
