  • Recently, a new developed petroleiun spray oil(PSO; D-C Tron $Plus^{(R)}$) has been used to control key pests in integrated pest management (IPM) system of citrus orchards in Australia. The efficacy and phytotoxicity of the PSO against the citrus red mite (Panonychus citri) were compared with conventional pesticides (e.g.Tebufenpyrad, Bifenazate and Sun spray oil) in field condition in Jeju. And under PSO mixing spray with some fungicides, the occurrence of phytotoxic symptoms on citrus leaf was investigated. All concentrations of PSO spraying (0.25%, 0.33%, 0.5% and 1.0%) were significantly suppressed the citrus red mite to similar levels of other conventional pesticides. And the spraying of PSO levels ${\geq}0.5%$ was induced not only occurrence of some oil-sucked symptoms on leaf, but also increase of the dropping leaf and fruit rates. As results from mixing PSO spraying test with other fungicides, little burning on new flush shoot was founded only in PSO 1% plus Fluazinam treatment. From the results of this study, with the consideration of pesticidal efficacy and phytotoxicity, 0.25% and 0.33% PSO spraying level will be recommended for the control of citrus red mite during summer season in Jeju.

  • Population fluctuation of O. kashmirica benefica, a major natural enemy of citrus red mite (Panonychus citri), was surveyed from 1997 to 2000 in yuzu orchards in Goheung region and, developmental periods, developmental threshold temperature (DT) and effective cumulative temperature (ET) were estimated. Under four constant temperatures of 15, 20, 25 and 30$\^{C}$, developmental periods from egg to adult of the beetles were 67.3, 31.4, 19.4 and 15.3 days, respectively. The period of each stage was long in the order of pupa> egg > 3rd larva> 2nd larva> 1st larva. Mean numbers of eggs oviposited by a female per day were 3.3, 5.6, 7.3 and 7.7 under the temperatures, respectively. The highest hatchability (92%) and adult emergence (60%) were shown under 25$\^{C}$. Adult longevity was 54.3 days for females, and 58.6 days for males. In natural condition, the sex ratio of the beetle was 0.58. Developmental thresholds (DT) for egg, 1st, 2nd, 3rd larva, pupa, and egg to adult were 12.7, 10.0, 10.8, 7.9, 10.1 and 10.6$\^{C}$, respectively. The effective cumulative temperatures (ET) were 41.4, 22.9, 22.7, 46.6, 165.3, 292.9 day-degree at the same development stage, respectively. The beetle occurred from early April to early December in yuzu orchards. The population peak of the beetles was dependent on the amount of prey mite (Panonychus citri), and the ratio of the predator to prey mite was 1 to 100-200 at predator peak stage in the field.

  • The first occurrence of the tomato russet mite, Aculops lycopersici Massee was in mid-late April, and the maximum occurrence was in mid-late June in 2013 and 2014. However, in 2015, the density of tomato russet mites increased in July. This pattern is thought to be attributed to temperature fluctuations, in which, low temperatures at night promoted their reproduction and long periods of high temperatures during the day promoted their dispersion. Comparison of the use of 11 Eco-friendly organic insecticides (EOIs) showed that, the mortality rates after application of 0.6% matrin(EOIMa) and 10% clove oil (EOICo) were 92.1% and 95.1%, respectively, when administered at 500-fold diluted concentrations. At 1,000-fold and 2,000-fold diluted concentrations, the mortality rates of EOIMa were 90.4% and 88.2%, respectively. In a field test, the mortality rates of EOIMa at the 1,000-fold diluted concentration and of EOICo at the 500-fold diluted concentration were 91.5% and 93.9%, respectively. In conclusion, theses two EOIs are sufficient to replace pesticides, and EOIMa seems to be particularly useful as a prophylactic given that it induced a mortality rate of 88.2% at a 2,000-fold diluted concentration.

  • A field colony of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, was selected with tetradifon for 4 mousing whole-plant residual method. This strain showed 371-fold resistance to tetradifon. The log dosehatchability lines of $F_{1}$ eggs(RS cross; Td5female$\times$Smale, and SR cross; Sfemale$\times$Td5male) were closer to the line of the resistant colony than to that of the susceptible. These differences could be due to cytoplasmic inheritance or maternal effect. The estimate of dominance index (D) for the $F_{1}$ eggs of RS cross was 0.998 and that for $F_{1}$ eggs of SR cross was 0.262. This indicates that tetradifon resistance is completely dominant in RS cross and incompletely dominant in SR cross. Td5 strain exhibited high levels of resistance to clofentezine, benzoximate, and chlorfencon, and no cross resistance to fenazaquin, pyridaben, flufenoxuron, tebufenpyrad, and fenothiocarb.

  • This research was carried out to investigate the seasonal occurrence of major pests and the effects of releases of natural enemies for biological control of the major pests in eggplant greenhouse. A total of 8 pest species in 7 families were identified. Among these pests, Myzus persicae, Aphis gossypii, Frankliniella occidentalis, Tetranychus urticae and Trialeurodes vaporariorum were the dominant species in eggplant greenhouse. Two aphid species occurred mainly from May to June, but their populations decreased rapidly from July. The population density of F. occidentalis was high from June to July and T. urticae and T. vaporariorum were abundant from July to September during the growing season of eggplant. In the trials of biological control of pests, aphids could be suppressed within the range of $87{\sim}97%$ by two times releases of Chrysopa pallens eggs. F. occidentalis and T. urticae could be suppressed within the range of $76{\sim}90\;and\;87{\sim}91%$ by three times releases of Orius sauteri adults, respectively. The releases of C. pallens eggs and O. sauteri adults were as effective as three times applications of insecticides for the control of aphids, F occidentalis and T. urticae from May to September.

  • Development of 3,700 folds resistance to etoxazole was found in the population of twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, collected from rose greenhouses in Buyo, Chungnam Provience in August 2000. This population was selected for 3yr with etoxazole to get 5,000,000 folds increase in resistance as compared to susceptible (S) strain. The etoxazole resistance was stablized for 16 months under the condition of no acaricide application. Inheritance and cross resistance in etoxazole to some acaricides of the etoxazole resistance strain (R) were investigated. There were differences of susceptibility in the etoxazole concentration-mortality relationships between $F_1$, $F_2$ progenies obtained from reciprocal cross with the S and R strains (R$_{♂}$${\times}$S$_{♂}$${\times}$R$_{♂}$). Degrees of dominance were 0.98 and 0.98 in $F_1$ and $F_2$ progenies of R$_{♂}$${\times}$S$_{♂}$, and -0.97 and -0.68 in $F_1$ and $F_2$ progenies of S$_{♀}$${\times}$R$_{♂}$ respectively. Inheritance in $F_1$ and $F_2$ progenies of R$_{♀}$${\times}$S$_{♂}$ were complete dominant. However $F_1$ and $F_2$ progenies of S$_{♀}$${\times}$R$_{♂}$ were incomplete recessive. These results suggest that inheritance of etoxazole resistance is controlled by a complete dominance. The R strain exhibited cross resistance to acequinocyl and emamectin benzoates in adult females, and milbemectin, amitraz and pyridaben in eggs. However they showed negatively correlated cross-resistance to bifenazate, a carbazate acaricide. These results may indicate bifenazate could be useful for the control of etoxazole resistant T. urticae population.

  • The ecological characteristics of the specialist insect predator, Oligota kashmirica benefica, were investigated for developing artificial rearing method with special interest on the oviposition behavior, the pattern of adult emergence and temperature in storage, and its effect on the density of the citrus red mite, Panonychus citri. Female beetle oviposited eggs mainly, $95\%$ of the eggs, on the bottom of leaves of the yuzu tree, and $91.3\%$ of them were covered with ecdysis skin of the red mites or the feces of themselves. The rate of adult emergence of the beetle rose up to $86.7\%$ when the horticultural media was provided for pupation from $60\%$ when it pupated in upland soil. Most larvae, $88\%$ of them, were found from the surface to the depth of 2 cm in the horticultural media. The optimum temperature for the storage of the adult beetle was found to be $12^{\circ}C$, at this temperature the 96.7, 73.3 and $70.0\%$ of the beetle survived for 10, 20, and 30 days, respectively. The control effect of the citrus red mite was appeared highest by releasing the beetle at the rate of one beetle against 150 mites.

  • The development of resistance to bifenazate (resistance ratio of egg=40.3 folds) was found in population of the twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, collected from rose greenhouses in Chilgok, Gyeongbuk Province in December 2000. This population was selected for 4 years with bifenazate treatment (over 150 times), and showed 248.8 folds increase in resistance as compared to susceptible (S) strain. Inheritance of bifenazate resistant strain (R) and cross resistance of this strain to 9 acaricides were investigated. There were differences of susceptibility in the bifenazate concentration-mortality relationships in F1 progenies obtained from reciprocal cross with the S and R strain $(R{\times}S,\;S{\times}R)$. Degrees of dominance were 0.48 and 0.94 in adult females and eggs of $R{\times}S$ and -0.85 and -0.17 in adult females and eggs of $S{\times}R$, respectively. Inheritance type in the F1 progeny of $R{\times}S$ was incomplete dominant, and F1 progeny of $S{\times}R$ was incomplete recessive. These results suggest that inheritance of bifenazate resistance is controlled by a complete dominance. The R strain exhibited cross resistance to acequinocyl and fenpyroximate in adult females, and amitraz, emamectin benzoate, fenpyroximate, milbemectin, pyridaben and spirodiclofen in eggs. However they showed negatively correlated cross-resistance to emamectin benzoate and milbemectin in adult females, and abamectin in eggs.

  • A fixed-precision-level sampling plan was developed to establish control of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, in two strawberry greenhouses (conventional plot, natural enemy plot). T. urticae was sampled by taking a three-leaflet leaf (1 stalk) from each plant (3 three-leaflet leaves) from each sampling position. Each leaflet was divided into three different units (1-leaflet, 2-leaflet, and 3-leaflet units) to compare relative net precision (RNP) values for selection of the appropriate sampling unit. The relative net precision values indicated that a 1-leaflet unit was more precise and cost-efficient than other units. The spatial distribution analysis was performed using Taylor's power law (TPL). Homogeneity of the TPL parameters in each greenhouse was evaluated by using the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). A fixed-precision-level sequential sampling plan was developed using the parameters of TPL generated from the combined data of the conventional plot and natural enemy plot in a 1-leaflet sampling unit. Sequential classification sampling plans were also developed using the action threshold of 3 and 10 mites for pooled data. Using the results obtained in the independent data, simulated validation of the developed sampling plan by Resampling validation for sampling plan (RVSP) indicated a reasonable level of precision.

  • Powdery mildew and two-spotted spider mite are detrimental to strawberry plants and are controlled with traditional pesticides. To accommodate consumer demand, eco-friendly methods of pest control are required. Strawberries were cultivated (in soil and in a hydroponic system) for two years, and ultraviolet B (UV-B) irradiation was used as an alternative pest control during the harvesting season. Three varieties were grown (Seolhyang, Kingsberry, and Durihyang), and four UV-B lamp/mulch (black, green, and light reflection sheet [LRS]) combinations were used during harvesting: UV-B+black or green mulch, UV-B+black or green+LRS, no UV-B+black or green, and no UV-B+black or green+LRS. In all varieties, powdery mildew was 65% more controlled when UV-B irradiation was used. The adult two-spotted spider mite density was lowest in the UV-B lamp+black or green+LRS treatments. Therefore, UV-B irradiation during the strawberry harvesting season could effectively control powdery mildew and two-spotted spider mite with little side effect on the plants.
