  • Mesostigmatid mites were collected from forest soils in Korea from December 1998 to October 1999. Eleven species were recognized including a new species, Neparholaspis bisunensis n. sp., and three new records, Holaspina communis (Ishikawa, 1966), Holaspina multidentatus (Ishikawa, 1980) and Holaspulus montanus Ishikawa, 1995.

  • Predaceous phytoseiid mites can be important components in integrated mite management program including bio-logical control of spider mites. While conducting population study of prey-predator system in pear orchards, 6 predaceous phytoseiids were found. Amblyseius womersleyi, A. eharai, A. kokufuensi and A. finlandicus were mostly found from tree canopy. While A. rademacheri was restricted in ground vegetation, A. makuwa was equally distributed in ground vegetation and tree trunk. Some ecological information for each species was reviewed. Strate-gies for their potential utility in pest management program and future study area were discussed.

  • Six species of the phytoseiid mites were recorded from the pear field of Naju District in Korea: Amblyseius womersleyi, A. eharai, A. orientalis, A. makuwa, A. bakeri and Proprioseiopsis nemotoi. Of these, A. bakeri and p. nemotoi were previously unrecorded in this field, and genus Proprioseiopsis is recorded for the first time in Korea.

  • Mites in the family Ascidae are soil dwelling predators of small insects which would have potential to be used as biological control agent. In Korea, 10 genera of 24 species were recorded in the family. During the soil acarine biodiversity study, Asca bicornis Canestrini & Fanzago, 1877 was discovered from moss habitat on Muljangori craer lake 936 m alt in Hallasan mountain in Jeju which was designated as UNESCO Biosphere reserve and World herigate site. We reports this as a new record to Korean Mesostigmata fauna, and provide the morphological description. This species has morphologically characteristic as all dorsal setae nude and needle shaped, lateral caudal projection of Z4 shaped, which are different from the con-general species of A. aphidioides.

  • For greenhouse crops, thrips is one of the major insect pests, but its control is difficult owing to short generation time, rapid escaping behavior, and development of pesticide resistance. Stratiolaelaps scimitus (Womersley) is a soil-dwelling predatory mite attacking various soil invertebrate species, including thrips. Using the method by growers' self-production, we mass-reared S. scimitus colony and investigated thrips control in the greenhouse chrysanthemum. The initial density of thrips was six individuals/flower. The treatment with one S. scimitus box in the greenhouse was estimated to be $1,000individuals/m^2$. From August to September 2018, the greenhouse was released with a total of 10 boxes of S. scimitus. The density of thrips in the untreated and the treated cultivar was $53.7{\pm}7.0$ and $13.5{\pm}1.7$ on the late September, respectively, which indicated a reduction of 74.9% in the treated cultivar. Our results suggest that S. scimitus was highly effective for the control of thrips in the greenhouse chrysanthemum although temperature is very high during the summer season.
