  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of transverse reinforcement in reinforced concrete tied columns subjected to monotonically increasing axial compression. Eighteen large-scale columns(260$\times$260$\times$1200 mm) were tested. Effects of main variables such as the concrete compressive strength, the tie configuration, the transverse reinforcement ratio, the tie spacing, and the spatting of the concrete cover were considered. High-strength concrete columns under concentric axial loads show extremely brittle behavior unless the columns are confined with transverse reinforcement that can provide sufficiently high lateral confinement pressure There is a consistent decrease in deformability of column specimen with increasing concrete strength. Test results were compared with the previous confinement model such as modified Kent-Park, Sheikh-Uzumeri, Mander, and Saatcioglu-Razvi model. The comparison indicates that many previous models for confined concrete overestimate or underestimate the ductility of confined concrete.

  • Confined concrete has enhanced strength and ductility compared with unconfined strength. Cause of these merits of confined concrete, many researches have been performed for confining effects of concrete and been studied in many fields. Although many researches about concrete confined by FRP sheets have been studied recently, it is difficult to apply concrete confined by FRP in real structures because FRP is a brittle material. In this study, the enhanced strength and ductility of concrete which is confined by steel tubes or steel plates were investigated. Fifty one specimens were tested and each specimen has different confining condition. Test results showed enhanced ductility and strength of confined concrete and concrete models were suggested under various confining conditions by regression of experimental data.

  • In the h-version of F.E.M., all piecewisely smooth curved boundaries can be approximated by a sufficient number of straight-sided elements. However, in the p-version the size of the element is usually large and hence the probability of distortions is more. An attempt has been made to generate a curved boundary by using a transfinite interpolation technique to avoid the discretization errors. In the following sections, it will be shown how to construct transfinite interpolants both in h-version and in p-version over polygonal and nonpolygonal regions. Three numerical tests are shown to validate the applicability and superior capability of transfinite interpolation technique.

  • In this study, a low-velocity impact test was performed to obtain the dynamic properties of solid propellants. The dynamic behavior of the solid propellant was examined by measuring the force and displacement of the impactor during the low-velocity impact test. The bending displacement was calculated by compensating for the local displacement caused by the low-velocity impact test in the form of three point bending and the shear displacement caused by using a short and thick solid propellant specimen. Stress and strain were calculated using compensated displacements and measured force, and dynamic properties of solid propellants were obtained from the stress-strain curve and compared with static bending test. The dynamic properties of solid propellant under the low-velocity impact loading at various operating temperature conditions such as room temperature(20 ℃), high temperature(63 ℃), and low temperature(-32 ℃) were compared and investigated.

  • In this paper, the effect of J-R curve changes on the determination of parameters in a failure model owing to the presence or absence of a side groove in a C(T) specimen is investigated. A stress-modified fracture strain model is implemented for FE damage simulations. C(T) specimens were taken from SA508 grade 1a low-alloy steel piping material, and some of them were processed with a side groove. Fracture toughness tests were performed at room temperature and at $316^{\circ}C$. The parameters of the failure model were determined by damage simulations using the J-R curves obtained from the tests. Finally, the results show that the determination of failure model parameters is not affected by variations in J-R curves owing to the presence or absence of a side groove.

  • The influence of thermal treatment and cold drawing was investigated for poly(ethy1ene terephthalate) films fabricated with various experimental conditions. Samples were elongated at room temperature under stepwise-drawing condition with the cross-head speed kom 0.5 to 500 mrdmin in an universal tester. Stress oscillation was observed in the stress-stnin curve of the samples heat-treatd at 50, 72 and $129^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, but it was not observed in the samples heat-treatd at $83^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. Thermal analyses of the samples were carried out in differential scanning calorimeter at the heating rate df $10^{\circ}C$/min/min, and the glass transition temperature, crystallization peak, enthalpy of fusion and degree of crystallinity were measured. The dynamic mechanical analyses of the samples were also carried out in a multiplefimction internal kiction pendulum at 1 Hz with the heating rate of $1.5^{\circ}C$/min, and it was found that the elastic modulus increases in the order of non-treated, heat-treated, and elongated samples.

  • Finite element simulations of tensile tests were performed to determine the equivalent stress - equivalent plastic strain curves, critical equivalent stresses, and critical equivalent plastic strains. Then, the curves were used as inputs to finite element simulations of fracture toughness tests to determine the plane strain fracture toughness. The critical COD was taken as the COD when the equivalent plastic strain at the crack tip reached a critical value, and it was used as a crack growth criterion. The relationship between the critical COD and the critical equivalent plastic strain or the reduction of area was found. The relationship between the plane strain fracture toughness and the product of the critical equivalent stress and the critical equivalent plastic strain was also found.

  • Uniaxial tensile tests of ETFE membrane are performed in this paper. Three kinds ETFE membrane with different thickness are used in the tests. The tensile strength, the tensile strain at break and the stress-strain curve are obtained from the tests. Futhermore, The cycle loading test of ETFE membrane is carried out through using different values of cycle stress. The residual strain, the relaxation of stress and the change of the elastic modulus of foil are investigated. In the creep test, three kinds of temperature (25, 40 and 60 $^{\circ}C$)and three kinds of stress(3,6and9 MPa) are set respectively and the creep time lasts 24 hours.

  • The film-type specimen of poly ethylene terephthalate (PET) was stepwise elongated under tension with various speed range of about 0.5~500 mm/min, and then the necking behavior during its plastic deformation was observed. When elongated at the speed range of about 20~100 mm/min, stress oscillation was apparently occurred in the stress-strain curve. When elongated at the speed range of about 200~500 mm/min, stress oscillation was not did. The transparent/opaque zone and cross-section area in the specimen elongated at the speed of about 50 mm/min were examined using the optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The corrosion characteristic of the specimen elongated at the speed of about 50 mm/min in 3.8 M NaOH alkali solution was examined using the optical microscopy.

  • An analytical model for predicting the shear strength of prestressed concrete beams without shear reinforcement was developed, on the basis of the existing strain-based shear strength model. It was assumed that the compression zone of intact concrete in the cross-section primarily resisted the shear forces rather than the tension zone. The shear capacity of concrete was defined based on the material failure criteria of concrete. The shear capacity of the compression zone was evaluated along the inclined failure surface, considering the interaction with the compressive normal stress. Since the distribution of the normal stress varies with the flexural deformation of the beam, the shear capacity was defined as a function of the flexural deformation. The shear strength of a beam was determined at the intersection of the shear capacity curve and the shear demand curve. The result of the comparisons to existing test results showed that the proposed model accurately predicted the shear strength of the test specimens.
