  • Based on centrifuge model tests, the failure mechanism of reinforced earth retaining wall under strip load was investigated in this paper. Tests were performed by changing the materials of reinforcing strips, strip lengths, and strip arrangements. The strips were strain-gauged to measure the tensions in strips. The results were analyzed and compared with various design methosds in use to verify their feasibility. Consequently, a centrifuge model test was an effective method of investigating the behavior of reinforced earth retaining wall. The 2 : 1 stress diffusion method showed comparable results with tests in estimating the capacity of the reinforced earth wall under strip load. The superposition of tensions due to selfweight of the backfill and strip load was valid to estimate total tensions mobilized in strips. Using the elasticity theory to estimate the maximum tension mobilized in strips due to surcharge, while solutions of Boussinesq and Westergaard underestimated less tensions than the measured valises, Frohlich solution showed the comparable results with tests.

  • In this study, consolidation test and numerical analysis were performed with the aim of investigating the characteristics of consolidation behavior of mixed soil with the amount and particle shape of inserted materials. Mixed soil was made up of matrix (dredged clay) and inserted material (crashed oyster shell and/or sand). The concept of stress share ratio was introduced to evaluate the consolidation characteristics of mixed soils. And the finite differential numerical analysis was carried out by applying the Mikasa's consolidation theory. From the results of experiments and numerical analysis, it was verified that mixed soil consolidation behavior is affected by changes in inserted material. When a similar amount of granular material was inserted, the compressibility of the clay matrix of oyster shell mixed soil was smaller than that of sand mixed soil.

  • Underground flexible pipes for electric cables are subject to external loads and surrounding soil pressure. Particularly, strain of flexible pipes is of great concern in terms of safety and maintenance for electric cables. In this paper, stress and strain of flexible pipes with various depth are compared using traditional formula, FEM analysis and model soil box test. The results show that theoretical values are more conservative in strain in comparison with model soil box test and FEM analysis. Considering the strain criteria - maximum 3.5%, flexible pipes can be buried at the depth of 40cm without additional soil improvement. From the result of this study, deformation formula compatible with the field condition was proposed.

  • In the present study, an analytical solution method is proposed for the seismic design of cantilever sheet pile walls and anchored sheet pile walls used in harbor construction. Seepage pressures, together with a change in magnitudes of effective horizontal soil pressures, are included in the proposed solution method. Also, the Mononobe-Okabe analysis as well as the Westergaard and Matsuo-Ohara theory of hydrodynamic pressures is used in the proposed method. Further, the choice of values for safety factors is examined for the seismic design of anchored sheet pile walls, and the effects of various parameters(dredge line slope, differential in water levels, anchor position, and wall friction angle) on embedment depth, anchor force, and maximum bending moment are analyzed for anchored walls in dense sand deposits. In addition. the tables that could be used for preliminary seismic design of anchored walls in dense sands are presented. The proposed method deals with the sheet pile walls with free earth support.

  • This study is intended to propose an approach to reliability-based safety evaluation as well as LRFR(Load and Resisitance Factor Rating) type capacity classification of military or civilian bridges based on the limit state models which are delived by incorporating all the uncertainties of resistance and load random variables including deterioration, and are used in a practical AFOSM (Advanced First Order Second Moment) method. The proposed methods for the assement of safety and load carrying capacity are applied for the evaluation of rating and classifications of several practical bridges against the crossing of military vehicles. Based on the observation of the numerical results, it can be concluded that the current NATO classification method which is based on the traditionl allowable stress concept can not provide real load carrying capacity but results in nominal classification, and therefore the reliability-based safety evaluation and LRFR-classification method or the corresponding rational allowable stress method proposed in this paper may have to be introduced into the classification practice.

  • In recent years, the structural shock response to UNDEX (UNDerwater EXplosion) has been studied as much, or more, through numerical simulations than through testing for several reasons. Very high costs and sensitive environmental concerns have kept destructive underwater explosion testing to a minimum. Increase of simulation capabilities and sophisticated simulation tools has made numerical simulations more efficient analysis methods as well as more reliable testing aids. In this study, the main issue is the fluid-structure interaction. Here, appropriate relations between the acoustic pressure on the fluid surface and displacements on the structure surface are formed internally. The analysis was carried out using ABAQUS/Explicit and the results have been visualized in ABAQUS CAE. The shock loading history, acoustic pressure, stress of stand-off point, the velocity and strain energy time histories were presented.

  • Fiber-reinforced composite laminates have high specific stiffness and strength and are expected to be useful for weight reduction in weight-sensitive industries, such as automotive and aerospace. However, designing composite laminates is often dependent on designer's experience and intuition because of difficulties in determining the number of plies and stacking sequence, which tends to lead to over-design. In this study, optimal design of composite laminates was performed to minimize weight, while withstanding the given load. Based on the enumeration method, all combinations of stacking sequence satisfying the design guideline for composite laminates were considered. Composite laminates were discretized into panels. Optimal number of plies and stacking sequence for each panel were determined considering local load on each panel and contiguity across adjacent panels. Failure index from Tsai-Wu criteria was optimized for strength and buckling analysis was performed for compressive load. Stacking angles of 0, ±45 and 90° were used.

  • The flash lamp annealing (FLA) process has been considered highly promising for manufacturing low-temperature polysilicon on large-scale backplanes. Based on a theoretical estimation, this study clarifies the critical mechanisms of glass backplane deformation during the FLA process. A simulation using a commercial FEM code with viscoelastic models shows that the local region, whose temperature is larger than the glass softening point, undergoes permanent structural shrinkage owing to stress relaxation. For larger backplanes (4th Gen), structural shrinkages and gravitational deflection are critical to deformation in the FLA process, resulting in an "M" shape; in smaller backplanes (0th Gen), the latter is negligible, resulting in a "U" shape.

  • Shape memory alloys (SMA) are often used in smart structures as active components. Their ability to provide large recovery forces and displacements has been useful in many applications, including devices for artificial muscles, active structural acoustic control, and shape control. Based on the 3-dimensional SMA constitutive equation in this paper, the radial displacement control of externally pressurized circular and semicircular composite cylinders under external pressure with a thin SMA layer bonded on its inner surface or inserted between composite layers in investigated using 3-dimensional finite element analysis. Upon actuation through resistive heating, SMAs start to transform from martensitic into austenitic state, simultaneously recover the prestrain, and thus cause the composite cylinders to go back to their original shapes of the cylinder cross-sections.

  • In order to investigate the short-term performance of polyethylene electrofusion joints, the mechanical tests and stress analysis have been conducted to the artificially defected weld joints. The defects of lack of fusion with a square-type were fabricated with 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60$\%$ size of the width of heat-ing wire zone, respectively. In this defect sires range, both tensile and bending test results showed the dependence of defect size to the electrofusion joints performance, but both sustained pressure and crush test results didn't. The numerical stress analysis results including the soil and internal pressures, tensile and bend-ing stresses clearly showed the dependence of fusion defect size. Based on both mechanical test and stress analysis results, the maximum acceptable defect size in polyethylene electrofusion joints is discussed.
