  • In this paper, the mongrel singular element with 6 node triangle and 8 node quadrilateral element with J-integral are developed and applied to the various plane crack problems for the isotropic material. The convergence nature is excellent for various crack size with even coarse mesh using the direct method. But the results of the mongrel element with J-integral are worse than the former's ones. Fracture tests were conducted on precracked CT specimens. Results show that, for 7075-T6 aluminum wing spar materials, the fracture toughness is 31.06 ksi.inch $\frac{1}{2}$ in the L-T direction.

  • Interfacial surface crack perpendicular to the surface, which is imbedded into bonded quarter planes under single anti-plane shear load is analyzed. The problem is formulated using Mellin transform, form which single Wiener-Hopf equation is derived. By solving the equation stress intensity factor is obtained in closed form. This solution can be used as a Green's function to generate the solutions of other problems with the same geometry but of different loading conditions.

  • The plane elastostatic boundary value problem with the sharp V-notched singularity is formulated by a contour integral method for determining numerically the stress intensity factors. The integral formula is based on Somigliana type of reciprocal work in terms of displacement and traction vectors on the plate boundary. The characteristic singular solutions can be identified on the basis of traction free boundary conditions of two radial notch edges. Two numerical example examples are treated in detail; a symmetric mode-I type of notched plate with various interior angles and a mixed mode type of cantilever subjected to end shear.

  • Recently, demand for the experimental analysis of crack, such as arbitrary or distributed ones which has been considered quite difficult to investigate by the theoretical and numerical method, is increasing. Among existent experimental methods applied to the analysis of stress intensity factors, the slab analogy method have the following merits; cracks can be replaced by similarity-shaped rigid body, and the distribution of stress is represented by slab curvature of duly bent specimen. For the accuracy improvement of this method, multi-point selection method was introduced and its accuracy proved by applying this method to the analysis of centrally linear and inclined cracks in a finite plate which are theoretically known. In this paper, moreover, the stress intensity factors of eccentric and skew-symmetric bent cracks were determined by multi-point selection method and newly developed moire tilted master grating method. The results obtained by this method showed good agreement with the reliably theoretical solutions.

  • The estimation of fatigue life at the design stage is very important in order to arrive at feasible and cost effective solutions considering the total lifetime of the structure and machinery compo-nents. In this study the practical procedure of prediction of fatigue life by use of cumulative damage factors based on Miner-Palmgren hypothesis and probability density function is shown with a $135,000m^3$ LNG tank being used as an example. In particular the parameters of Weibull distribution taht determine the stress spectrum are dis-cussed. At the end some of uncertainties associated with fatigue life prediction are discussed. The main results obtained from this study are as follows: 1. The practical procedure of prediction of fatigue life by use of cumulative damage factors expressed in combination of probability density function and S-N data is proposed. 2. The calculated fatigue life is influenced by the shape parameter and stress block. The conser-vative fatigue design can be achieved when using higher value of shape parameter and the stress blocks divded into more stress blocks.

  • The coefficient of consolidation has been evaluated using the conventional oedometer tests based on the one-dimensional consolidation theory. In the field, however, the actual response of the soil will be subject to the three-dimensional condition during consolidation. In this research, a new method f3r estimating the coefficient of consolidation for various stress-deformation conditions was proposed. The good agreement between the computed dissipation of pore pressure and the measured data confirms the usefulness and the applicability of the proposed method to predict the exact rate of consolidation.

  • The SGBEM-FEM alternating method has been known to be a very effective method for analyzing threedimensional cracks in a finite body. The accurate values of the stress intensity factor can be obtained for a general planar or nonplanar three-dimensional crack. In the existing method, eight-noded quadrilateral boundary elements are used to model a crack. In some cases, three-node triangle boundary elements are more convenient for the modeling of a crack with a general shape. In this study, a crack is modeled with three-noded triangular and seven-noded quadrilateral elements by using the advancing-front mesh generation method. The stress intensity factors are obtained for cracks with several shapes and the accuracy of results is examined.

  • Redistribution of residual stress and its effects during fatigue crack propagates from tensile residual stress region in weldment are investigated. Tests are performed by using welded CCT specimens of structual rolling steel (SS400) and it makes fatigue crack propagate from tensile residual stress region. For this study tension-tension loading type is selected by external loading condition and magnetizing stress indicator is used correctly to measure redistribution of residual stress according to fatigue crack growth and number of loading cycles. From this result, it is proved that redistribution of residual stress is mainly consist of residual stress released by fatigue crack growth. When fatigue crack propagates from tensile residual stress region residual stress are redistributed and it makes fatigue crack growth rate largely increase. Fatigue crack growth rate is low in case of redistributed residual stress compare with initial distributed residual stress.

  • In this study, relationships between CBR values tested by Korean Standards (KS CBR) and the elastic moduli from CU compression tests are developed for the subgrade soils. Triaxial compression and KS CBR tests are carried out on five types of samples from 15 points in Korean ezpressways. Triaxial compression tests are performed under 3 types of coifining pressures to generalize the CBR -elastic modulus relationship as functions of confining pressured and mean principal stresses. From the regression analyses of experimental results, equations for relationships between the KS CBR and elastic moduli of roadbed Boils are proposed. An equation for the relation- ship between the KS CBR and the maximum dry density of roadbed soil is also proposed.
