  • In this study, a method to reduce temperature rise due to hydration in mass concrete is investigated. It is to use retarder (glucose) for reducing heat of hydration and to use calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) for compensating the retardation effect due to its role as a nucleation seed. For this purpose, the temperature rise of cement paste due to hydration was measured and the effect of using both C-S-H and glucose on setting and 28-day compressive strength of mortar specimens was investigated. According to the experimental results, using C-S-H and glucose caused the reduction in the maximum temperature but accelerated the time to reach the maximum temperature compared to that of retarded cement paste using glucose. In addition, using C-S-H and glucose did not show significant effect on 28-day compressive strength of mortar specimens, indicating that the method shown in this study can be a successful alternative to control maximum temperature rise in mass concrete.

  • This paper investigates experimentally the effect of combined addition of expansive additive and shrinkage reducing agent(SRA) on setting time, compressive strength and drying shrinkage of concrete. An increase of EA and SRA content leads to a reduction in flowability, which causes the increase of superplasticizer dosage, while air content increases. For setting time, in spite of increased superplasticizer dosage, with the increase of EA and SRA, setting time shortens. This is due to the presence of alkali ion by SRA and the faster formation of ettringite. At dosage of 5.0% of EA, concrete has the highest compressive strength and above that dosage, compressive strength decreased. On the contrary, the increase of SRA dosage results in a decrease in compressive strength. Combined addition of EA of 5.0% and SRA of 1.0% shows a comparable strength with control concrete. For drying shrinkage, as expected, the increase of EA and SRA dosage leads to reduction of drying shrinkage markedly. Moreover, combined addition of EA and SRA has better drying shrinkage reduction effect than individual use of EA and SRA by as much as $5{\sim}16%$. Optimal combination of EA and SRA is fixed at 5.0% of EA and 0.5% of SRA based on the consideration of the effect of EA and SRA on fresh state, compressive strength and shrinkage of concrete.

  • Existing cast in place piles made by grouting cement mortar have many problems that cracks by autogeneous and drying shrinkage bring about the deterioration of force for piles, segregations by the submersion of ground water occur and also, high cement contents lead to rise the manufacturing cost. Therefore, this study is intended to investigate the mechanical properties of high performance mortar, incorporating expansive additives and fly ash. for cast in place piles. According to the experimental results, as the contents of expansive additives increase in mortar mixture, fluidity decrease and air contents shows inverse tendency. Setting time is delayed. Although compressive strength at 7days shows a decline tendency. compressive strength at 28days and 91days increase slightly with 5% of expansive additives. As fly ash increase in mortar mixture, high fluidity is shown, air contents increase and setting time is delayed at fresh state, and additives are, the larger length change is, whereas shrinkage decrease with the increase of fly ash.

  • In the construction industry, due to the cost rise of raw material for concrete, we have looked into recycling by-products which came from foundry. When using the Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag(SG), it is good for enhancing the qualities of concrete such as reducing hydration heat, increasing fluidity, long-term strength and durability, but it has some problems : construction time is increased or the rotation rate of form is decreased due to low development of early strength. In this study, therefore, to enhance the early strength of SG mortar, we used some alkali activators(KOH, NaOH, $Na_2CO_3$, $Na_2SO_4$, water glass, $Ca(OH)_2$, alum. This paper deals with reacted products, setting time, heat evolution rate, flow and the strength development of SG cement mortar activated by alkali activators. From the results, if alkali activators were selected and added properly, SG is good for using as the materials of mortar and concrete.

  • When concrete is worked in cold weather, the methods of using hot air, water and aggregate heating, accelerators are used to prevent early frosting and to improve early strength. But these methods raise problems such as implementation difficulty, high cost, and energy losses. Among the available cold weathering methods, accelerator method is the most economical but with the drawbacks of rapid setting and insufficient workability in the initial hydration stage. Therefore, the tablet method usually used for pharmaceutical field was applied to the accelerator method to compare the controlled reaction time of the new and old accelerator method. Based on the test results, physical and mechanical properties of concrete were tested and the possibility of delaying initial reactions to increase the total reaction time was evaluated. The results showed that when both accelerators and tablet were used, setting-time decreased. Physical properties of concrete were optimal for tablet 0.5% and 1.0%. Also, accelerator 0.5%, tablet 0.5% and 1.0% showed good early strengths.

  • In this study, initial crack index was evaluated by FEM analysis to find the crack propagation from hydration heat in precast concrete. As results, as the usage of hardening accelerator increased, initial compressive strength increased and setting time was shortened. Additionally, as amounts of hardening accelerators increased, the central temperature of concrete increased and the time to reach the highest temperature was shortened. It was demonstrated that the hardening accelerators accelerated the hydration reaction of cement, and caused the increase of hydration heat within the short period of time. Furthermore, the crack index for evaluating the heat level was performed by FEM. As results, there was no problem about the cracks, despite of the growth of initial high hydration heat. This is because of the increased tensile strength that is large enough to sustain the thermally induced-stress.

  • In recent years, the demand for the development of high quality and cost effective materials, as well as the competition to ensure a diverse and sufficient amount of ready-mixed concrete, has been increasing rapidly. In this experiment, concretes made with different admixtures are blended with each other in different combinations and ratios, in order to identify potential problems. The first test was a slump level test, in which all of the concretes met the required numbers, as they also did in the test for air content. Plain organic acid concrete scored the highest in bleeding amount, but organic acid mix in general showed a similar outcome. In the early measurement of compressive strength, plain naphthalene concrete was the strongest. Of the blends, the 5:5 mix of organic acid and naphthalene was the strongest. In the standard measurement, the 5:5 mix of naphthalene and lignin was the strongest. Tensile strength tests revealed similar results. Length change rate proved to be greater in blended concrete than in plain concrete, and dry shrinkage rate was highest in the 7:3 ratio blends. Through SEM photo analysis, it was confirmed that the 7:3 ratio blends contained more micro-voids. In conclusion, with the exception of a specific few combinations, it was found that the blending of different types of concrete is undesirable due to the delayed coagulation time as well as the early decrease in strength.

  • In this study, shrinkage reducing agent was fabricated with $12CaO{\cdot}7Al_2O_3(C_{12}A_7)$ of CA-based slag and anhydrite. Mortars added shrinkage reducing agent were experimented for enhancement of shrinkage reduction and compressive strength. The properties of setting time, length change and compressive strength of mortar changed with mixing ratios. From 0% to 6% $C_{12}A_7$-based slag, setting times got shorter and length changes of mortars were similar to 7days. From 1day to 7days, the more mortar had $C_{12}A_7$-based slag, the higher compressive strength. At 28days, compressive strength of mortars with 6% $C_{12}A_7$-based slag was about 36MPa. After 35days, mortar with 6% $C_{12}A_7$-based slag had the lowest ratio of shrinkage reduction. So mortar with 6% $C_{12}A_7$-based slag had the excellent characteristics such as compressive strength and shrinkage reduction ratio.

  • This study is to investigate the influence of the over-added chemical agents, such as water reducing agent(WRA) and AE water reducing agent(AEWRA), on the physical properties of concrete to estimate the degree of damage due to over-added chemical agents. For the fresh concrete, slump and slump flow increased with the increase of WRA and AEWRA as expected. Material segregation phenomenon was observed with the over dosage of lignin based AEWRA about 4 times larger than recommended dosage. The over dosage of AE water reducing agent about 4 times larger than recommended dosage resulted in an increase of air contents remarkably. The set retardation occurred greatly with the increase of AEWRA and WRA. For the properties of the hardened concrete corresponding to the over dosage of AEWRA, it is found that compressive strength of over added AEWRA and WRA concrete are much smaller than those of base and recommended dosage concrete proportionally due to associated increasing air content.

  • For some Korean newsprint mill, addition level of aluminum sulfate has been reduced because sulfur from aluminum sulfate has detrimental effect on the efficiency of anaerobic water treatment. At this moment, an unexpected decrease in sizing degree of TMP mixed newspaper was occurred. The phenomena means that hydrophobic substance usually originated from TMP cannot be fixed on the paper. This study focused on effect of alum and PAC on sizing of paper and contamination. Also, substitutability of PAC was discussed as a possible alternatives of aluminum sulfate under anaerobic condition of water treatment. Evaluation of sizing degree and pitch deposit potential were performed at the varied addition level of PAC and aluminum sulfate. Hydrophobic substance mainly derived from TMP could be fixed on the surface of fiber by PAC. Fines retention was not changed by replacing aluminum sulfate with PAC. Additionally, fixing of hydrophobic substance without excessive agglomeration can be enhanced by PAC with low molecular weight. Consequently, sizing degree of newspaper and contamination of recycling process of ONP can be controlled by low molecular weighted PAC.
