In this study, Br-PPO was developed by applying additive organic particles through a suspension polymerization synthesis method. The anion exchange membrane fuel cell system performance was evaluated using it to an anion exchange membrane. To improve the performance, organic ion exchange particles were prepared and added to the anion exchange membrane. Chemical structure analysis and synthesis were determined through FT-IR and NMR, and tensile strength and thermal stability were measured through TGA and UTM to determine whether it could be driven. Before the anion exchange membrane fuel cell test, the performance was evaluated by measuring the ion conductivity and ion exchange capacity. Finally, the Br-PPO-TMA-SDV (0.7%) anion exchange membrane with excellent ion conductivity and ion exchange capacity was introduced into the fuel cell system. Its performance was compared with FAA-3-50, a commercial membrane, to determine whether it could be introduced into a fuel cell system.
The anion exchange membrane using the blending polymer of poly(ether sulfone) and poly(phenylene sulfide sulfone) was prepared. It was confirmed by EDXS and FT-IR analysis that the prepared anion exchange membrane had the -N- as an anion exchange group. The ionic conductivity in 1 mol/L $H_2SO_4$ aqueous solution was measured. The ionic conductivity of the prepared anion exchange membrane was 0.015~0.083 S/cm, and had a high value compared with AFN and APS as a commercial anion exchange membrane. Permeabilities of the vanadium ions through the prepared anion exchange membrane were tested to evaluate the possibility as a separator in vanadium redox flow battery. Vanadium ion permeation rate in the prepared anion exchange membrane had a low value compared with Nafion 117 as a commercial cation exchange and AFN as a commercial anion exchange membrane.
In this study, we sought to verify the applicability of anion exchange membrane water electrolysis system using FAA-3-50, Neosepta-ASE, Sustainion grade T, and Fujifilm type 10, which are commercial anion exchange membranes. The morphology of the commercial membranes and the elements on the surface were analyzed using SEM/EDX to confirm the distribution of functional groups included in the commercial membranes. In addition, mechanical strength and decomposition temperature were measured using UTM and TGA to check whether the driving conditions of the water electrolyte were satisfied. The ion exchange capacity and ion conductivity were measured to understand the performance of anion exchange membranes, and the alkaline resistance of each commercial membrane was checked and durability test was performed because they were driven in an alkaline environment. Finally, a membrane-electrode assembly was manufactured and a water electrolysis single cell test was performed to confirm cell performance at 60℃, 70℃, and 80℃. The long-term cell test was measured 20 cycles at other temperatures to compare water electrolysis performance.
The anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis for high purity hydrogen production is attracting attention as a next-generation green hydrogen production technology by using inexpensive non-noble metal-based catalysts instead of conventional precious metal catalysts used in proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis systems. However, since AEM water electrolysis technology is in the early stages of development, it is necessary to develop research on AEM, ionomers, electrode supports and catalysts, which are key elements of AEM water electrolysis. Among them, current research in the field of catalysts is being studied to apply a previously developed half-cell catalyst for alkali to the AEM system, and the applied catalyst has disadvantages of low activity and durability. Therefore, this review presented a catalyst synthesis technique that promoted oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) using a non-noble metal-based catalyst in an alkaline medium.

An anion exchange membrane was prepared for a separator in the alkaline water electrolysis. An anion exchange membrane was prepared by the chloromethylation and amination of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) used as a base polymer. The membrane properties of the prepared anion exchange membrane such as the membrane resistance and ion exchange capacity were measured. The minimum membrane resistance of the prepared anion exchange membrane was $2.9{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ in 1M NaOH aq. solution. This membrane had 2.17 meq./g-dry-membrane and 43.4% for the ion exchange capacity and water content, respectively. The membrane properties of the prepared anion exchange membrane was compared with that of the commercial anion exchange membrane. The membrane resistance decreased in the order; AHT>IOMAC> Homemade membrane> AHA>APS=AFN. The ion exchange capacity decreased in the order; Homemade membrane>AFN>APS>AHT>AHA>IOMAC.

Anion exchange membranes have been used for water electrolysis, which can produce hydrogen, and fuel cells, which can generate electrical energy using hydrogen fuel. Anion exchange membranes operate based on hydroxide ion (OH-) conduction under alkaline conditions. However, since the anion exchange membrane shows relatively low ion conductivity and alkaline stability, there is still a limit to its commercialization in water electrolysis and fuel cells. To address these issues, it is important to develop novel anion exchange membrane materials by rationally designing a polymer structure. In particular, the polymer structure and synthetic method need to be controlled. By doing so, for polymers, the physical properties, ionic conductivity, and alkaline stability can be maintained. Among many anion exchange membranes, poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) is commercially available and easily accessible. In addition, the PPO has relatively high mechanical and chemical stability compared to other polymers. In this review, we introduce the recent development strategy and characteristics of PPO-based polymer materials used in anion exchange membranes.

In this study, functional anion-exchange membranes have been prepared and characterized to improve the permeation fluxes of the anion and urea for peritoneum dialysis. They were prepared by UV and radiation graft polymerization methods. The separation-membrane prepared by UV graft polymerization showed the highest grafting degree when HEMA and VBTAC were mixed by 1:2 ratio. However, the grafting degree decreased slightly at compositions above the 1:2 ratio because of the disruption of UV penetration caused by build-up of homopolymer. In the case of photo-initiator, the grafting degree increased up to 0.2 wt%, above which it decreased to a small extent. For the two membranes prepared by radiation graft polymerization, the VBTAC/HEMA membrane showed 96% grafting degree for 6 h reaction time and the GMA membrane showed over 100% grafting degree for 2 h reaction time. Anion-exchange membranes were prepared with 113% grafting degree and with DEA and TEA exchange groups. The DEA membrane showed the conversion degree of 70% in 4 h reaction time while the TEA membrane showed 30% in 2 h reaction time. The prepared anion-exchange membranes were permeable to only anions and urea, but not cations.
In this study, sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) as cation exchange membrane and blended and crosslinked poly(vinyl amine) (PVAm) with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membrane as anion exchange membrane were used and then the performance experiments of the membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) installed with both membranes were carried out. The newly prepared anion exchange membrane were characterized through water content, ion exchange capacity and FT-IR. The crosslinking time of 3 h to 5 h indicated that the salt removal was reduced from 81.3, 65.7% to 53.8%. The effect of PVAm contents from 40, 60, to 80% on the salt removal was shown 81.3, 75.2 and 37.7%, respectively. As a result, it was concluded that the crosslinking time and the content of PVAm had an influence on the salt removal efficiency.
Crosslinking of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) anion exchange membranes, which can be used for capacitive deionization (CDI), was investigated. PPO Anion exchange polymer was prepared through bromination and amination reaction steps and crosslinked with bisphenol A diglycidylether (BADGE), m-phenylenediamine (m-PDA), and hexamethylenediamine (HMDA). The gelation time by crosslinking was short in the order of HMDA > m-PDA > BADGE. The anion exchange membranes crosslinked at room temperature over a certain amount of crosslinking agent did not dissolve in an aprotic solvent such as 1-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) and the chemical durability of their membranes to organic solvent increased. The ion exchange capacity and water uptake of anion exchange membranes crosslinked with different crosslinker (BADGE) contents were measured and compared. The CDI performance of the crosslinked PPO anion exchange membrane immersed in the HMDA solution was almost the same as that of the non - crosslinked membrane except for the initial stage of the adsorption step.
