Eavesdropping prevention performance is evaluated on a commercial window shaker, which is used to prevent a glass window from eavesdropping. Speech transmission index (STI) is introduced in order to estimate quantitatively the speech intelligibility of the sound detected on the glass window. Objective test by IEC standard using modulation transfer function (MTF) is performed to determine STI. Using Maximum Length Sequency (MLS) signal as a sound source, MTF is measured by accelerometers and laser doppler vibrometer. STI under different level of disturbing wave are compared to confirm the disturbing effect on the speech intelligibility.
The purpose of this study was to show the characteristics of phonetic contrasts of one-syllable words and speech intelligibility in hearing-impaired adults. Seven subjects with hearing-impaired participated in this experiment(2 males, 5 females). The test materials are 77 pairs of one-syllable words with phonetic contrasts. The results of this study were as follows: (1) The average score of intelligibility(scored accuracy) was the highest in contrasts of onset feature. (2) The scored percentages of error(except for combinations of contrasts) were the highest in articulatory manner contrasts of onset, tongue height contrasts of nucleus, and articulatory place contrasts of coda, respectively.
This study was designed to investigate the relationship between intelligibility and phonemic contrasts, and acoustic features in terms of speech development. A total of 212 Putonghua speaking children was participated in the experiment. There were phonemic contrasts significantly related with speech intelligibility: aspirated vs. fricative, retroflex vs. unretroflex, and front vs. back nasal vowel contrast. A regression analysis showed that 88% of the speech intelligibility could be predicted by these phonemic contrasts. Acoustic values were significantly related to the intelligibility of the Putonghua-speaking children's speech: voice onset time of unaspirated stops, and the duration of frication noise in fricatives.
Possibility of the remote eavesdropping through window glass is investigated using a laser sensor. Various thicknesses and types of glass windows are excited by maximum length sequency (MLS) signal and the vibration sound is detected by a laser doppler vibrometer. Intelligibility of the detected sound is evaluated using the speech transmission index (STI), which is based on the modulation transfer function (MTF). In order to identify the disturbing effect, different level of disturbing wave is generated by an outside speaker and a window shaker attached on the glass window. On the different thickness of glass windows, decrease effect of the speech intelligibility is analysed.
The present study examined two acoustic characteristics(duration and intensity) of vowels produced by 4 cerebral palsic adults and 4 nondisabled adults in conversational and clear speech. In this study, clear speech means: (1) slow one's speech rate just a little, (2) articulate all phonemes accurately and increase vocal volume. Speech material included 10 bisyllabic real words in the frame sentences. Temporal-acoustic analysis showed that vowels produced by two speaker groups in clear speech(in this case, more accurate and louder speech) were significantly longer than vowels in conversational speech. In addition, intensity of vowels produced by cerebral palsic speakers in clear speech(in this case, more accurate and louder speech) was higher than in conversational speech.
Intelligibility of speech transmitted to listeners can significantly be degraded in noisy environments such as in auditorium and in train station due to ambient noises. Noise-masked speech signal is hard to be recognized by listeners. Among the conventional methods to improve speech intelligibility, consonant-vowel intensity ratio (CVR) approach reinforces the powers of overall consonants. However, excessively reinforced consonant is not helpful in recognition. Furthermore, only some of consonants are improved by the CVR approach. In this paper, we propose the corrective weighting (CW) approach that reinforces the powers of consonants according to syllable-type such as consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC), consonant-vowel (CV) and vowel-consonant (VC) in Korean differently, considering the level of listeners' recognition. The proposed CW approach was evaluated by the subjective test, Comparison Category Rating (CCR) test of ITU-T P.800, showed better performance, that is, 0.18 and 0.24 higher than the unprocessed CVR approach, respectively.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of syntactic complexity (sentence length and sentence structure) on sentence repetition performance and intelligibility between specific language impairment (SLI) and normal children. Thirteen SLI children and twenty-six normal children, matched by 3 years of language, participated in this study. The sentence repetition performance of the subjects were analyzed based on the sentence length (3-word simple sentences and 5-word simple sentences) and sentence structure (5-word simple sentences, 5-word conjoined complex sentences, and 5-word embedded complex sentences). The results of this study indicated the sentence structure influenced sentence repetition performance and intelligibility of SLI children only. The implication of these findings were discussed.
There are many factors that affect speech intelligibility and speech acceptability. Structural anomalies and neuromotor pathologies are known for the reasons of abnormal speech sounds. And there are minor variations related to oral mechanism. Speaking with restricted mouth opening related to therapeutic procedure or habitual speech pattern might affect the quality of speech sounds. So this study compared speech intelligibility and speech acceptability of recorded 24 words in two conditions (restricted mouth opening condition and normal mouth opening condition) by 30 normal hearing adults. The results showed that speech intelligibility and speech acceptability were significantly lower in restricted mouth opening condition. And speech acceptability was significantly lower than speech intelligibility in restricted mouth opening condition. Speech acceptability in restricted mouth opening condition was significantly lower especially in open vowel. These findings indicated that the mouth opening condition could affect vowel shape and could be an adverse effect on speech intelligibility and speech acceptability.
