  • This study has been undertaken with objective of studying the mechanism and condition of formation of hexagonal boron nitride from reduction of boric okide in the presence of carbon under nitrogen atmosphere. It was found that the formation of hexagonal boron nitride was started at 1400$^{\circ}C$ and almost completed its conversion at 1550$^{\circ}C$. The morphology of boron nitride synthesized in this study was very fine and platelet. It was considered as reaction pathway of hexagonal boron nitride that boron oxide was reduced to born and evaporated by activated carbon, and then it was reacted with nitrogen.

  • The effect of process parameter of plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD) on the variation of the ratio between cubic boron nitride (c-BN) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) in the film was in-vestigated. The plasma was generated by electric power with the frequency between 100 and 500 KHz. BCl3 and NH3 were used as a boron and nitrogen source respectively and Ar and hydrogen were added as a car-rier gas. Films were composed of h-BN and c-BN and its ratio varied with the magnitude of process parameters, voltage of the electric power, substrate bias voltage, reaction pressure, gas composition, sub-strate temperature. TEM observation showed that h-BN phase was amorphous while crystalline c-BN par-ticle was imbedded in h-BN matrix in the case of c-BN and h-BN mixed film.

  • In this paper, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) particles were added between the sheets of prepreg, and the effect of on many properties of BN-embedded carbon fiber reinforced plastics was investigated. The amount of BN particles which corresponds with 0 to 15 wt% of total resin weight was used as an additive material. The tensile strength and the inter-laminar shear strength of BN-embedded CFRP samples were improved by maximally 13.6%, and 6.7%, respectively. The tendency changes of thermal, electrical conductivities and the morphology of cross-section of CFRPs were also observed. This study suggests the possibility of controlling the characteristics of carbon fiber-BN-epoxy composites to use for aerospace applications.

  • According to a report in 2011, hexagonal boron nitride demonstrated good solubility in pure water, even without surfactants or organic functionalization. Hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets are an effective lubricant additive, and their solubility in pure water has motivated lubrication engineers to utilize aqueous solutions containing these nanosheets as water-based lubricants. In this study, we measure the width and height of the hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets dispersed in pure water by using the Zetasizer and atomic force microscopy. Without surfactants or functionalization, aqueous solutions containing 0.10, 0.07, 0.05, and 0.01 wt% of hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets are synthesized via sonication-assisted hydrolysis. The Zetasizer provides only a one-dimensional size of approximately 410 nm, regardless of the concentration of the solution. Thus, it does not allow the estimation of the shape of the nanosheet. To acquire the three-dimensional size of the nanosheets, atomic force microscopy is employed. The aqueous solutions containing 0.10, 0.07, 0.05, and 0.01 wt% of the hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets show average values of 740, 450, 700, and 610 nm in width, and 37, 26, 33, and 32 nm in thickness, respectively. No significant trend is observed between the concentration of the solution and size of the nanosheets. Therefore, when preparing a water-based lubricant, it may be appropriate to adjust conditions such as ultrasonication time rather than the concentration.

  • Hexagonal boron nitride was synthesized from boron oxide and sodium amide in ammonia gas stream. The reaction mechanisms and characteristics of as synthesized boron nitride was investigated by means of TG, DTA, IR, XRD, SEM and PSA. The results are ; 1) hexagonal boron nitride was synthesized from reactions at temperatures above 40$0^{\circ}C$ 2) Sodium metaborate was present as by-product after reaction so that the reaction mechanism is reduced as follows : 2B2O3+3NaNH2longrightarrowBN+3NaBO2+2NH3. 3) boron nitride obtained at the reaction temperature below 40$0^{\circ}C$ is found to have random layer strudcture but the structure transits to ordered layer structure rapidly with increasing reaction temperature, showing separation of (101) differaction line from (10)band in XRD pattern of the reaction product at 50$0^{\circ}C$.

  • In order to develop an integrated heat dissipating material and gas barrier film for electronics, new polymer was designed and synthesized for preparing composites containing hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) filler. Depending on the size and content of the hBN filler, both thermal conductivity and oxygen transmission rate can be adjusted. The composite achieved a high thermal conductivity of 28.0 W·m-1·K-1 at most and the oxygen transmission rate was decreased by 62% compared to that of the filler free matrix. Effective filler aspect ratios could be estimated by comparing thermal conductivity and oxygen transmission rate with values predicted by theoretical models. Discrepancy on the aspect ratios extracted from thermal conductivity and oxygen transmission rate comparisons was also discussed.

  • A means of enhancing the performance of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) is increasing the differences in work functions between contacting materials. Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) exhibits excellent mechanical properties and high chemical stability as well as a high work function. As a result, engineers in the field of energy harvesting have envisioned using h-BN in the electrification layer in TENGs. For the industrial application of h-BN in TENGs, large-scale production is necessary, and h-BN is generally exfoliated and dispersed in various solvents. In this study, we evaluate the performance of a TENG with h-BN nanoflakes in the polyimide (PI) layer. To synthesize a PI composite containing h-BN nanoflakes, h-BN powders are exfoliated and dispersed in poly(amic acid) (PAA), which is the precursor of PI. Then, h-BN dispersion is spin-coated onto the PI film and cured for 2 h under 300℃. This composite material can then be used for the electrification layer in TENGs. Below the electrification layer, an aluminum foil is placed and used as an electrode. When the contact and separation processes with polyethylene terephthalate are repeated, the fabricated TENG shows a maximum power density of 190.8 W/m2. This study shows that h-BN is a promising material for enhancing the performance of the electrification layer in TENGs.

  • To address tremendous needs for developing efficiently heat dissipating material with lightweights, a new class of polymer possessing recyclable and malleable characteristics was synthesized for incorporating model functional hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) filler. A good interfacial affinity between the polymer matrix and the filler along with shear force generated upon manufacturing the composite yielded the final product bearing highly aligned filler via simple hot pressing method. For this reason, the composite exhibited a high thermal conductivity of 13.8 W/mK. Moreover, it was possible to recover the h-BN from the composite without physical/chemical denaturation of the filler by chemically depolymerizing the matrix, thus the recovered filler can be re-used in the future. We believe this polymer could be beneficial as matrix for incorporating many other functional fillers, thus they may find applications in various polymeric composite related fields.
