  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different levels of dietary ME on growth performance and carcass characteristics in two different strains of broiler chicken. A total of one thousand, 1-day-old A strain and R strain male chicks were randomly assigned into 8 treatments in a $2{\times}4$ factorial arrangement. They were fed iso-nitrogenic (CP 21%) crumbled diets formulated to contain metabolizable energy (ME) 2,950 to 3,250 kcal/kg in increment of 100 kcal/kg in the starter phase (1 to 21d) and iso-nitrogenic (CP 19%) pelleted diets containing same ME levels as in the finishing phase (22 to 38d). The body weight (BW) gain of chicks fed the lower ME diets (2,950 or 3,050 kcal/kg) were higher than those of the higher ME groups. The dietary energy level showed significant effects on feed intake and feed conversion rate (FCR) from 1 to 38 days of age (p<0.05). With the increment of dietary energy, feed intake tended to be reduced, whereas FCR was improved in the two strains of broiler chickens. The lowest FCR was observed at 3,250 kcal/kg diet groups in both of the two strains from 1 to 38 days of age. Feed intake and BW gain during 38 days were significantly affected by the strain factor. Increasing dietary energy up to 3,250 kcal/kg had no effect on the relative weights of breast meat and abdominal fat. The dietary energy and strains showed significant effects on the dressing percentage. There were no significant differences in various blood profiles except for GPT activity.

  • Effects of dietary killed salmonella and vancomycin on the performance and immune response was investigated in broiler chicks inoculated with Salmonella typhimurium. During 3 week(27 d) of age, experimental diet did not affect daily gain, feed intake and feed efficiency. Dietary killed salmonella and vancomycin decreased MnSOD activity. At 7day after Salmonella typhimurium inoculation, dietary killed salmonella and vancomycin increased, daily gain and feed efficiency of broiler chicks. At 7 and 15 day after salmonella inoculation, dietary killed salmonella and vancomycin decreased erythrocyte peroxidase activity, but elevated proliferation of PBMC stimulated with LPS and supernatant IL-1 level secreted by the PBMC. The results suggested that dietary killed salmonella and vancomycin improved the performance of broiler chicks due to modulate antioxidant system and innate immune response of broiler chicks innoculated with Salmonella typhimurium.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of spent bleaching clay(SBC) as an energy resource for meat type chicks. A total of one hundred twenty 1-d old broiler chicks(Han-hyop, No. 3) were divided into four groups and each group was assigned to one of the following diets: 0(T1), 2.0(T2), 4.0(T3) and $6.0\%$ SBC(T4). Each treatment had 3 replications of 10 birds. Before feeding experimental diets, they were fed a commercial diet for a week Body weight gain and feed intake tended to increase in T3 and T4, respectively. Feed efficiency(feed intake/ gain) tended to decrease in T3 compared to other groups. Fatty acid composition of breast and thigh meat was not significantly affected by feeding SBC. Utilization of dry matter, energy, crude protein and crude fat was lower in T4 than in the other groups during both starter and finisher periods(p<0.05). Crude ash utilization was not significantly affected by feeding dietary SBC. These results indicate that broiler diets may be supplemented with 2 to $4\%$ SBC without adverse effect on growth.

  • This onsite survey was performed by visiting sites in Israel and USA where broiler litter is studied, manufactured as feed and applied practically and interviewing experts related. Their advanced experiences, technologies and informations were collected, analyzed, compared with Korean situations and described on the text of this article. Although broiler litter has been successfully used as feed for at least 40 years in Israel and USA, its practice and application rate of the technologies related has been very slow in Korea. Many informations presented here will be very helpful for the successful onsite application of hygienically processed broiler litter as livestock feed. It's doubtless that these efforts to use broiler litterlike underutilized feed resource will result in considerable livestock production cost cutdown and environmental pollution prevention.

  • A total of 216 day-old broiler chickens were randomly assigned to 6 treatment combined 2 dietary protein regimens (22-20%, 20-18% for starter and finisher, respectively) with 3 times of change (2, 4, 6 weeks) to study the effects of different protein levels and time of change from starter to finisher ration on the performance of broilers. Increasing the dietary protein level resulted in not only a significant increase in the body weight gain and the protein requirement per kg body weight gain, but also an improvement of feed efficiency. However abdominal fat accumulation was decreased by adding incremental levels of protein. On the other hand, the earlier time of change from starter to finisher ration, less\ulcorner\ulcornerbody weight gain and the abdominal fat accumulation. But feed intake and viability were not affected by the dietary protein level and/or the time of change from starter to finisher ration. Income was highest for birds fed 22% and 20% protein diet' starter and finisher, respectively changed from starter to finisher at 4weeks of age.

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplemental dry powder of Rehmannia radix (RR) root on the growth performance and physiological status of broiler chicks. The treatments consisted of corn-soybean meal control diet, and RR 0.5, 1, and 2% diets. A total of 160 Arbor Acre male broiler chicks were randomly allotted to 16 pens ; four pens per treatment and 10 birds per pen. The growth performance, feed intake and carcass weight did not show any differences among the treatment groups, but feed conversion was significantly lower (P< 0.05) in RR 1% group than that of the control group. The muscle color was lighter (P < 0.05) in RR lof group than those of the other treatment groups. The blood concentrations of protein, glutamic-oxaloacetic-transaminase (GOT) and glutamic- pyruvic-transaminase (GPT) were not different (P > 0.05) among the treatment groups, but the blood total cholesterol content was significantly decreased (P < 0.05) in RR 2% group than those the other treatment groups. The blood concentration of sugar was lower (P <0.05) in RR 2% group than those of the other treatment groups, and hemoglobin concentration was decreased (P <0.05) by addition RR. Crude fat content of thigh muscle was higher in RR 1% group than those of the other treatment groups, and bone hardness of broiler chicks fed RR was higher (P < 0.05) than that of the control group. The saturated fatty acid content of the thigh muscle tende to be high in control and RR 0.5% groups, and unsaturated fatty acid content tende to be high in RR 1 and 2% groups than those of the other treatment groups
