  • A numerical model for the thermal response analysis of concrete structures is suggested. The model includes the stress-strain relationship, constitutive relationship, and multiaxial failure criteria at elevated temperature conditions. Modified Saenz's model was used to describe the stress-strain relationship at high temperatures. Concrete subjected to elevated temperatures undergoes rapid strain increase and dimensional instability. In order to explain those changes in mechanical properties, a constitutive model of concrete subjected to elevated temperature is proposed. The model consists of four strain components; free thermal creep strain, stress-induced (mechanical) strain, thermal creep strain, and transient strain due to moisture effects. The failure model employs modified Drucker-Prager model in order to describe the temperature dependent multiaxial failure criteria. Some numerical analyses are performed and compared with the experimental results to verify the proposed model. According to the comparison, the suggested material model gives reliable analytical results.

  • The settlements by liquefaction seldom occur uniformly because of soil homogeneity, however differential settlements are major cause of the damages to structures. From the past researches, author paid attention to the fact that stress history during undrained cyclic shear process affects greatly on the volumetric strains of the post-liquefaction. Therefore, the effect of the residual shear strain in cyclic shear process was examined in this study. The experiment apparatus based on strain control with volumetric strain control device was used for the study to investigate the effect of the residual strain on the relationship between volumetric strain and effective stress of clean and granite sandy soil. It could be seen an insignificant difference in the volumetric strain after liquefaction under various residual shear strain conditions in the case of clean sand. On the other hand, in granite sandy soil, the volumetric strain after liquefaction was small when the lower level of the residual shear strain was applied. And, the residual shear strain during cyclic shear affected the shape of the relation curve between effective stress and volumetric strain as well.

  • Improved seismic performances of RC bridges can be attained by sufficient ductilities of piers, which can be obtained by providing sufficient lateral confinements to the plastic hinge regions of piers. The cross sectional shape and the amount of lateral reinforcements are key parameters in the determination of effective confinements. Even though identical amounts of lateral reinforcement are provided, the effective confinement differs due to different spacing, arrangements, hook details and so on. Unlike circular sections in which confinement is exerted by mere hoop reinforcements, cross-ties are arranged in square or rectangular sections to enhance the effective confinements. The stress-strain relationship of confined concrete is varied by how to consider these cross-ties. In this study, the stress-strain relationships of confined concrete with cross-ties are investigated experimentally and their mechanical characteristics are estimated by comparison with other empirical equations.

  • In this study we establish a process to predict hardening behavior considering the Bauschinger effect for zircaloy-4 sheets. When a metal is compressed after tension in forming, the yield strength decreases. For this reason, the Bauschinger effect should be considered in FE simulations of spring-back. We suggested a suitable specimen size and a method for determining the optimum tightening torque for simple shear tests. Shear stress-strain curves are obtained for five materials. We developed a method to convert the shear load-displacement curve to the effective stress-strain curve with FEA. We simulated the simple shear forward/reverse test using the combined isotropic/kinematic hardening model. We also investigated the change of the load-displacement curve by varying the hardening coefficients. We determined the hardening coefficients so that they follow the hardening behavior of zircaloy-4 in experiments.

  • A novel indentation theory is proposed by examining the data from the incremental plasticity theory based finite element analyses. First the optimal data acquisition location is selected, where the strain gradient is the least and the effect of friction is negligible. This data acquisition point increases the strain range by a factor of five. Numerical regressions of obtained data exhibit that strain hardening exponent and yield strain are the two main parameters which govern the subindenter deformation characteristics. The new indentation theory successfully provides the stress-strain curve with an average error less than 3%.

  • The present study shows the moment-average curvature relationship and effective inertia moment of RC beams obtained from the nonlinear analysis based on the parabola-rectangular stress-strain curve defined in EC-2 code. The variables examined are concrete strength and steel ratio, and moment-average curvature relationship and effective inertia moment obtained are compared with those of the current KCI provisions. As the results of the comparison, the followings could be said: Since the KCI provisions(the Branson method) were originally derived based on the experimental data ranged from 2.2 to 4 of $M/M_{cr}$ and 1.3 to 3.5 of $I_{ut}/I_{cr}$, thereby within these ranges the inertia moments obtained from the nonlinear analysis are closely agreed with those predicted by the Branson method. However, beyond those range the remarkable difference could be found between the two results. In particular, for beams having low steel ratio the inertia moment resulted from the nonlinear analysis are significantly smaller than those obtained from the KCI(Branson) method. This result may imply that the deflection of lightly reinforced members, such as slabs in buildings, becomes much larger than those calculated according to the current design provisions.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to evaluate the material properties of high-yield strength materials exceeding 10GPa from spherical indentation. Using a regression equation considering four indentation variables, we map the load displacement relation into a stress-strain relation. To calculate the properties of high-strength materials, we then write a program that produces material properties using the loading / unloading data from the indentation test. The errors in material properties computed by the program are within 0.3, 0.8, and 6.4 for the elastic modulus, yield strength, and hardening coefficient, respectively.

  • This paper is about proposal of a calculation method and development of an analytical program for predicting crack width and deflection in structural concrete members. The proposed method numerically calculate stresses in steel rebar using a parabola-rectangle stress-strain curve and a modified tension stiffening factor considering the effect of the cover thickness. Based on the study results, a calculation method to predict crack width and deflection in reinforced concrete flexural members is proposed utilizing effective tension area and idealized tension chord as well as effective moment-curvature relationship considering tension stiffening effect. The calculation method was applied to the test specimens available in literatures. The study results showed that the crack width and deflections predicted by the proposed method were closed to the experimentally measured data compared the current design code provisions.

  • An improved method for evaluating effective buckling lengths of beam-column members in plane frames is newly proposed based on system inelastic buckling analysis. To this end, the tangent stiffness matrix of be am-column elements is first calculated using stability functions and then the inelastic buckling analysis method is presented. The scheme for determining effective length of individual members is also addressed. Design examples and numerical results ?uc presented to show the validity of the proposed method.

  • In this work, some inaccuracies and limitation of prior indentation theory, which is based on the deformation theory of plasticity and experimental observations, are first investigated. Then effects of major material properties on the configuration of indentation load-deflection curve are examined via incremental plasticity theory based finite element analyses. It is confirmed that subindenter deformation and stress-strain distribution from the deformation theory of plasticity are quite dissimilar to those from incremental theory of plasticity. We finally suggest the optimal data acquisition location, where the strain gradient is the least and the effect of friction is negligible. This data acquisition point increases the strain range by a factor of five.
