In this study, we proposed a high frequency induction hardening analysis method based on electromagnetic-thermal co-simulation. In the high frequency induction heating analysis, the results of the finite element analysis (FEA) (considering the change of the material property and the cooling factor according to the temperature) and those of the high frequency induction hardening experiment (using the S45C specimen) were compared. The hardness of the S45C specimens was measured using the micro Vickers hardness test to determine the depth of hardening. The measurement results were then compared with the results of FEA. The result of high frequency induction heating analysis showed that the temperature was more than $750^{\circ}C$, which is the A2 transformation point of S45C, while the temperature during quenching was below $200^{\circ}C$. The results showed that the difference of the depth of hardening between the FEA and the experiment is 0.2mm.

In this study, Charpy impact test and numerical studies were performed to examine the effects of failure behavior and energy absorption on the notch position. For this purpose, carbon steel plate(SA-516 Gr. 70) with thickness of 25mm usually used for pressure vessel was welded by SMAW(Shielded Metal-Arc Welding)method and specimens were fabricated from the welded plate. The Charpy impact tests were then performed with specimens having different notch positions varying within HAZ. A series of three-dimensional FE analysis which simulates the Charpy test and crack propagation are carried out as well. We divided HAZ into two, three and four regions to apply mechanical properties of HAZ to FE-analys. Results reveal that the absorbed energies during impact test depend significantly on the notch position. To obtain the results of reliability, HAZ should be divided into at least three regions.
Metal and polymer sandwich composites, which are made of sheet metal sheath and polymer or fiber reinforced plastic core, have been reconsidered as an alternative to sheet metal due to their lightness and multifunctional properties such as damping and sound-proof properties. For the successful applications of these composites, the delamination prediction based on the adhesion strength is important element. In this study, the numerical simulation of the delamination behavior of polymeric adhesive tapes with metallic surfaces was performed using cohesive zone elements and finite element software. The traction-separation law of the cohesive zone element was defined using the fracture energy derived from peel mechanics and experimental results from peel test and implemented in finite element software. The peel test of the polymeric adhesive film against steel surface was simulated and compared with experiments, demonstrating reasonable agreement between simulation and experiment.

A preburner for the staged combustion in the high performance liquid rocket engine is being developed and strength experiments and finite element analyses on specimens, which simulate the brazing joint of the preburner, were performed and the results were compared. One specimen simulate the joints near oxygen injectors of head by the funance brazing and two specimens the joints of the combustion chamber cooling channel by vacuum brazing. The experiments were burst ones with strain gauges.
This paper presents the application of the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) numerical technique to simulate the driving of open-ended piles into sandy soil. The main objective of this study was to investigate the applicability of CEL technique to the behavior of the driven pile penetration. Comprehensive studies to verify the behavior of driven pile penetration are presented in this paper. Through comparison with results of field load tests, the CEL methodology was found to be in good agreement with the general trend observed by in situ measurement, and the CEL approach accurately simulated the behavior of driven pipe piles.

Powder Injection Molding(PM) is an advanced and complicated technology for manufacturing ceramic or metal products making use of a conventional injection molding process, which is generally used for plastic products. Among many technologies involved in the successful PIM, injection molding process is one of the key steps to form a desired shape out of powder/binder mixtures. Thus, it is of great importance to have a numerical tool to predict the powder injection molding filling process. In this regard, a finite element analysis system has been developed for numerical simulations of filling process of powder injection molding. Powder/polymer mixtures during the filling pro cess of injection molding can be rheologically characterized as Non-Newtonian fluids with a so called yield phenomena and have a peculiar feature of apparent slip phenomena on the wall boundaries surrounding mold cavity. Therefore, in the present study, a physical modeling of the filling process of powder/polymer mixtures was developed to take into account both the yield stress and slip phenomena and a finite element formulation was developed accordingly. The numerical analysis scheme for filling simulation is accomplished by combining a finite element method with control volume technique to simulate the movement of flow front and a finite difference method to calculate the temperature distribution. The present study presents the modeling, numerical scheme and some numerical analysis results showing the effect of the yield stress and slip phenomena.

We simulated large deformation and inelastic behavior of API-X80 steel linepipes using nonlinear finite element method. Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman(GTN) model is employed for the development of the constitutive model of the steel. The GTN model is implemented in the form of the user-supplied material subroutine(UMAT) for the commercial software of ABAQUS. To calibrate the model parameters, we simulated the behavior of the uniaxial tension test using ABAQUS equipped with the developed GTN model. Using the set of the model parameters, we were able to capture the characteristics of the plastic buckling of API-X80 steel linepipes.

This paper concentrates on the finite element analysis of concrete structures considering the material nonlinearity and time-dependent structural behavior. Using the rotating crack model among the smeared cracking model, the structural behavior up to ultimate load is simulated, and concrete is assumed to be an orthotropic material. Especially to include the tension stiffening effect in bending behavior, a criterion based on the fracture mechanics concept is introduced and the numerical error according to the finite element mesh size can be minimized through the application of the proposed criterion. Besides, the governing equation for steel is systematized by embeded model to cope with the difficulty in modeling of complex geometry. Finally, to trace the structural behavior with time under cracked and/or uncracked section, an algorithm for the purpose of time-dependent analysis is formulated in plane stress-strain condition by the age-adjusted effective modulus method.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of implant thread profile on the marginal bone stresses which develop during implant insertion. Materials and methods: Four experimental implants were created by placing four different thread systems on the body ($4.1mm{\times}10mm$) of the ITI standard implant. The thread types studied in this study included the buttress, v-shape, reverse buttress, and square shape threads. In order to examine the insertion stress generation, 3D dynamic finite element analysis was performed which simulated the insertion process of implants into a 1.2 mm thick cortical bone plate (containing 3.5 mm pilot hole) using a PC-based DEFORM 3D (ver 6.1, SFTC, Columbus, OH, USA) program. Results: Insertion stresses higher than human cortical bone developed around the implants. The level of insertion stresses was much different depending on the thread. Stress level was lowest near the v-shape thread, and highest near the square shaped thread. Difference in the interfacial bone stress level was more noticeable near the valley than the tip of the threads. Conclusion: Among the four threads, the v-shape thread was turned out to minimize the insertion stress level and thereby create better conditions for implant osseointegration.
