In this paper, a novel hybrid composite shield to protect space structures from hypervelocity impact of micrometeoroid and space debris is proposed. The finite element model of the proposed shield was constructed and finite element analysis was conducted to approximate the energy absorption rate. Before the final model analysis, analysis of each component including the aluminum plate, PMMA plate, and intermediate layer of fabric was performed, verifying the finite element model of each component. The material properties used in the analyses were predicted material property values for high strain rates. The analysis results showed that, other than the fabric, the energy absorption rate of each component was in agreement. Afterwards, the finite element model of the hybrid composite shield was constructed, where it was analyzed for the restrained and unrestrained fabric boundary condition cases. Through the finite element analysis, the fiber pullout mechanism was realized for the hybrid shield with free boundary inserted fabric, and it was observed that this mechanism led to energy absorption increase.

The heat sink system for a main board in a network server computer is built on printed circuit board by an anchor structure, mounted by eutectic SnPb solder. The solder creeping is caused by a constant high temperature condition in the computer and it eventually makes fatal failures. The FE model is used to calculate the stress and predict the life of soldered anchor in the computer. In the model, Anand constitutive equation is employed to simulate creep characteristics of solder. The creep test is conducted to verify and calibrate the solder model. A special jig is designed to mitigate the flexure of printed circuit board and to get the creep deformation of solder only in the test. Test results are compared with analysis and calibration is conducted on Anand model's constants. Precise life prediction of soldered anchor in creep condition can be performed by this model.

This paper describes multi-scale based ductile fracture simulation using finite element (FE) damage analysis. The maximum and crack initiation loads of cracked components were predicted using proposed virtual testing method. To apply the local approach criteria for ductile fracture, stress-modified fracture strain model was adopted as the damage criteria with modified calibration technique that only requires tensile and fracture toughness test data. Element-size-dependent critical damage model is also introduced to apply the proposed ductile fracture simulation to large-scale components. The results of the simulation were compared with those of the tests on SA333 Gr. 6 full-scale pipes at $288^{\circ}C$, performed by the Battelle Memorial Institute.

Three-dimensional finite element model for analysis of reinforced concrete members was developed in order to investigate the prediction of bending and shear failure of reinforced concrete beams. A failure surface of concrete in strain space was newly proposed in order to predict accurately the ductile response of concrete under multi-axial confining stresses. Cracking of concrete in triaxial state was incorporated with considering the tensile strain-softening behavior of cracked concrete as well as the cracked shear behavior on cracked surface of concrete caused by aggregate interlocking and, dowel action. By correlation study on failure types of bending and shear of beams, current finite element model was well simulated not only the type of ductile bending failure of under-reinforced beams but also the type of brittle shear failure of no-stirruped reinforced concrete beam.
This paper proposes a new finite element formulation based on enhanced first-order shear deformation theory including the transverse normal strain effect via the mixed formulation (EFSDTM-TN) for the effective thermo-mechanical analysis of laminated composite structures. The main objective of the EFSDTM-TN is to provide an accurate and efficient solution in describing the thermo-mechanical behavior of laminated composite structures by systematically establishing the relationship between two independent fields (displacement and transverse stress fields) via the mixed formulation. Another key feature is to consider the thermal strain effect without additional unknown variables by introducing a refined transverse displacement field. In the finite element formulation, an eight-node isoparametric plate element is newly developed to implement the advantage of the EFSDTM-TN. Numerical solutions for the thermo-mechanical behavior of laminated composite structures are compared with those available in the open literature to demonstrate the numerical performance of the proposed finite element model.
Power transmission shafts in rotary wing aircraft use a hollow shaft to reduce weight. We can apply linear elastic fracture mechanics to predict crack propagation behavior. This paper predicted crack growth life of a hollow shaft with a circumferential through-type crack by finite element analysis. A 2D finite element model was created by applying a torsion and forming elements considering cracks. We defined the initial crack length and performed the finite element analysis by increasing the crack length to derive stress intensity factor at crack tips. We defined the length just prior to the stress intensity factor exceeding the fracture toughness as the crack limit length. We calculated the crack limit length using a handbook and numerically integrated the crack growth rate equation to derive growth life of each crack. The growth life of each crack was compared to verify the proposed finite element analysis method.

This paper presents the numerical estimation of the fatigue life for the frame box's welded parts of the marine vessel engine S60MC-C. The time-variations of the effective stresses at the critical points during a piston cycle are computed through the finite element analysis, by applying the dynamic loadings that were analytically derived in the previous paper. The fatigue lives of the welded parts are estimated by making use of the hot-spot stress extrapolation and the Palmgren-miner cumulative damage rule.

This paper predicts the spring-in effect of curved laminated composite structure for various stacking sequence using finite element analysis(ABAQUS). In composite manufacturing process, large temperature difference, different coefficient of thermal expansion and chemical shrinkage effect cause distortion of composite parts such as spring-in and warpage. Distortion of composite structure is important issue on quality of product, and it should be considered in manufacturing process. In finite element analysis, a CHILE(Cure Hardening Instantaneously Linear Elastic) model and chemical shrinkage effects are considered developing user subroutine in ABAQUS and some cases are simulated.

The FEM is a computer-aided mathematical technique for obtaining approximate solution to the differential equations. The pointwise convergence defines the relationship between the mesh size and the tolerance. This will play an important role in improving quality of finite element approximate solution. In the paper. We evaluate the convergence on a certain unknown point with a 1-irregular mesh refinement and spectral order enrichment. This means that the degree of freedom is minimized within a tolerance.
