  • In order to prevent the ground subsidence accidents caused by the occurrence of underground cavity, it is necessary to evaluate the mechanical characteristics in the relaxation zone of the underground cavity. Also, the relaxation zone including underground cavity be appropriately reinforced. This paper described analysis results based on finite element method that was conducted to analyze the mechanism for occurrence of the relaxation zone around the underground cavity. The finite element analysis applied in forced displacement was carried out to simulate the underground cavity and relaxation zone, and then there were compared with previous research results. The analysis results showed that the void distribution of soil around the underground cavity has figured out. As a result, the area of the relaxation zone could be quantitatively presented by reduction characteristics of the shear stress.

  • The building structure in Korea is planned to maximize the use of space in recent. The hybrid OCB(Optimized Composite Beam) beam is developed to take advantage of using the space. The OCB beam is composed of the steel H-beam section reinforced by open strands in negative moment zone and the pretensioned PSC concrete section in positive zone. Flexural behavior of typical architectural hybrid OCB beam section was investigated by F.E.M. The 15m, 20m, 30m OCB models were tested on nonlinear material and geometry under static loading system. Following results are obtained from the analysis; 1)The OCB beam develop initial flexural cracking over full service loading. 2)Overall deflections of OCB beam under the service loads are less than those of the allowable limits in KCI Code(2012). 3)The ultimate load capacity get over the nominal strength of the OCB main section. The OCB beam is verified of structural reliability from the finite element analysis.

  • Despite its flexibility to complex geometry, three-dimensional (3D) electromagnetic(EM) modeling schemes using finite element method (FEM) have been faced to practical limitation due to the resulting large system of equations to be solved. An efficient 3D FEM modeling scheme has been developed, which can adopt either direct or iterative solver depending on the problems. The direct solver PARDISO can reduce the computing time remarkably by incorporating parallel computing on multi-core processor systems, which is appropriate for single frequency multi-source configurations. When limited memory, the iterative solver BiCGSTAB(1) can provide fast and stable convergence. Efficient 3D simulations can be performed by choosing an optimum solver depending on the computing environment and the problems to be solved. This modeling includes various types of controlled-sources and can be exploited as an efficient engine for 3D inversion.

  • Sand compaction pile (SCP) is one of the ground improvement techniques which are being used for not only accelerating consolidation but also increasing bearing capacity of loose sands or soft clay grounds. In this study, laboratory model tests and 3-D finite element analyses were performed to investigate the interaction between sand compaction piles and surrounding soft soils. Based on the results obtained, as the area replacement ratio increases, the stress concentration ratio increases at the pile point, the settlement decreases, and the relative displacement between column and soil also decreases. It is also found that numerical study is illustrated by good comparison with model test results, and the numerical analysis revealed slip effects which could not be specifically identified in the model tests.

  • Typhoon induced surge simulations are done to make an establishment of coastal disaster prevention plan. To apply efficient run-up and overtopping on vertical harbor docks, in which prevailing wet-dry scheme cannot be satisfied due to infinite steepness, an imaginary internal barrier concept introduced and analyzed. Before real application on the Mokpo harbor area, feasibility tests are done on an idealized simple geometry and as a result it is found that the moderate width of the barrier might be 1 m. The threshold value of the minimum wet depth $H_{min}$ for land area, which behaves sensitive role in inundation area and depth, depends on grid size. However it is revealed that 0.01 m is adequate value in this fine finite element with 10 m spacing. A hypothetical typhoon of 100 years return period in central pressure and maximum velocity is generated based on historical tracks. Simulation of possible inundation on Mokpo area is performed with asymmetrical vortex of hypothetical typhoon and wave coupling. Model results show general agreement in pattern compared to other's prediction, however possibility of inundation enlargement is expected in harbor area.

  • In this research, static load test is performed to verify the arch effect and structural performance of CFTA(Concrete-Filled and Tied steel tubular Arch) girder, and FE(Finite Element) analysis is performed to investigate validity of the test result. CFTA girder is designed to maximize the benefit of each material, such as steel plate, filled concrete and PS tendon. Static load test is performed based on the frame-analysis result of 12m sample miniature model. The result of static load test is that structural performance and safety of CFTA girder are confirmed and there is different deflection mode with other structural form result from arch effect. FE analysis with ABAQUS is also performed to show the validity of the truck collision safety and static load test.

  • The purpose of this study is elastic plastic finite element analysis for standard fracture toughness specimens. The principles of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics are shortly summarized and the special requirements for computational tools are derived. Possibilities to model the crack tip singularities are mentioned. The relevant fracture parameters like J-Integral and COD and their correlation are evaluated from elastic plastic finite element calculations of standard fracture toughnes specimens. The size and form of the plastic zone are shown. The comparion between experiment and caculation is discussed as well as the application of the limit load analysis.

  • A finite element model for simulating gradually and rapidly varied unsteady flow in open channel is developed based on dynamic wave equation using Petrov-Galerkin method. A matrix stability analysis shows the selective damping of short wave lengths and excellent phase accuracies achived by Petrov-Galerkin method. Whereas the Preissmann scheme displays less selective damping and poor phase accuracies, and Bubnov-Galerkin method shows nondissipative characteristics whicn causes a divergence problem in short wave length. The analysis also shows that the Petrov-Galerkin method displays the desirable combination of selective damping of high frequency progressive waves over a wide range of Courant number and good phase accuracy at low Courant number. Therefore, the Petrov-Galerkin can be effectively applied to gradually and rapidly varied unsteady flow.

  • Three-dimensional (3-D) electromagnetic (EM) modeling algorithm has been developed using finite element method (FEM) to acquire more efficient interpretation techniques of EM data. When FEM based on nodal elements is applied to EM problem, spurious solutions, so called 'vector parasite', are occurred due to the discontinuity of normal electric fields and may lead the completely erroneous results. Among the methods curing the spurious problem, this study adopts vector element of which basis function has the amplitude and direction. To reduce computational cost and required core memory, complex bi-conjugate gradient (CBCG) method is applied to solving complex symmetric matrix of FEM and point Jacobi method is used to accelerate convergence rate. To verify the developed 3-D EM modeling algorithm, its electric and magnetic field for a layered-earth model are compared with those of layered-earth solution. As we expected, the vector based FEM developed in this study does not cause ny vector parasite problem, while conventional nodal based FEM causes lots of errors due to the discontinuity of field variables. For testing the applicability to high frequencies 100 MHz is used as an operating frequency for the layer structure. Modeled fields calculated from developed code are also well matched with the layered-earth ones for a model with dielectric anomaly as well as conductive anomaly. In a vertical electric dipole source case, however, the discontinuity of field variables causes the conventional nodal based FEM to include a lot of errors due to the vector parasite. Even for the case, the vector based FEM gave almost the same results as the layered-earth solution. The magnetic fields induced by a dielectric anomaly at high frequencies show unique behaviors different from those by a conductive anomaly. Since our 3-D EM modeling code can reflect the effect from a dielectric anomaly as well as a conductive anomaly, it may be a groundwork not only to apply high frequency EM method to the field survey but also to analyze the fold data obtained by high frequency EM method.
