This paper presents a new infinite element for modeling far-field region in dynamic analysis of a fluid-saturated two-phase medium. The infinite element method combined to the infinite element method has been effectively applied to several engineering problems where the full space or half-space medium should be modeled. However, the currently available infinite element for dynamic analysis of two-phase porous medium has a limitation that Pl and P2 waves can only be Included in shape function expressing behavior ol the body. In this paper, the infinite element method is extended to simulate arbitrary number of multi-component waves. For this purpose, the far-field of the porous medium is assumed to be a layered half-space, while the near-field Includes structures as well as irregular soil medium. The accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed element have demonstrated using 1-D and 2-D wave propagation problems.

Statement of problem: There have been a few studies about unsplinted implant retainted maxillary overdenture. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of different position of implant for 2 implants-retained maxillary overdenture. Materials and methods: Three-dimensional finite element models were used to reproduce an edentulous human maxilla with an implant-retained overdenture. Two implants in the canine tooth positions on both side and in the second premolar tooth positions on both side models were examined. Axial loads of 100 N were applied to the occlusal surface at the right first molar tooth positions. Maximum stress at the implant-bone interface and stress at the cortical bone surface just under the loading point were observed. Results and conclusion: Within the limits of this study, maximum stresses were concentrated around implant of canine position at loading side. The second premolar area was thought to be more favorable to distribution of stress on mucosa, alveolar bone and implants than canine area for maxillary overdenture.

A finite element method has been developed to study the material nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrte structures. Concrete behavior under the biaxial state of stress is represented by a nonlinear constitutive relationship which incorporates tensile cracking, tensile stiffening effect between cracks and the strain-softening phenomenon beyond the maximum compressive strength. The concrete model used is based upon nonlinear elasticity by assuming concrete to be an orthotropic material and modeled as equivalent uniaxial stress-strain constitutive relationship using equivalent uniaxial strain. The streel reinforcement is assumed to be in a uniaxial stress state and is modeled as a bilinear, elasto-plastic material with strain hardening approximating the Bauschinger effect. In plane stress state, R.C. beams is modeled as a quadratic element that has two degrees of freedom in each node. And this results of finite element analysis are compared with the experimential results of midspan deflection, stresses and strains.
This paper deals with the application of joint element in the finite element modeling of discontinuities encountered during rock tunneling. A nodal displacement joint element was implemented in a two dimensional finite element program GEOFE2D. The applicability of the joint element for modeling of discontinuities and the numerical stability of the implemented algorithm were examined by comparing the results of reduced small scale model tests as well as commercially available FEM program. The GEOFE2D was then used to analyze a tunnel crossed by a major discontinuity for the purpose of understanding the effect of discontinuity on the tunnel behavior. In addition, a modeling technique for the junction of discontinuity and shotcrete lining was presented. The results of analysis indicated that the stress-strain field around the tunnel is significantly altered by the presence of discontinuity, and that the stresses in the shotcrete lining considerably increase at the junction of the shotcrete lining and the discontinuity. It is therefore concluded that the major discontinuities must be carefully modeled in the finite element analysis of a tunneling problem in order to obtain more reliable results close to actual tunnel behavior.

In this paper an enhanced quadratic finite element for static and dynamic analysis of plate structures is presented. The performance of a proposed plate element is improved by the coupled use of non conforming displacement modes, the selective integration scheme, and the assumed shear strain fields. An efficient direct modification method is also applied to this element to solve the problem such as failure of the patch test due to the adoption of non conforming modes. The proposed quadratic finite element does not show any spurious mechanism and does not produce shear locking phenomena even with distorted meshes. It is shown that the results obtained by this element converged to analytical solutions very rapidly tough numerical tests for standard benchmark problems. It is also noted that this element is applicable to transient dynamic analysis of Mindlin plates.

Model tests on propped retaining walls were performed for the investigation of wall displacement, distribution of earth pressure, surface settlement and underground movement at various excavation stage in sand. The result of model tests on the trough of surface settlement showed considerable difference depending on the characteristic of wall stiffness, wall friction and soil condition. The location of maximum underground movement were found to be at range of 0.15H to 0. 1H(H: Final excavation depth). Effect of arching by the redistribution of earth pressure were closely related to the stiffness of wall as well as the soil condition. The wall displacement and earth pressure distribution were simulated by elasto - plastic beam analysis program and finite element method with GDHM model respectively. The result of elasto-plastic analysis showed some discrepancy on the wall displacement and earth pressure, but result of underground movement by FEM with various wall stiffness were in good agreement with the model tests.

Statement of problem: A casting connection technique is widely used for repair, correction and addition to base metal framework. However, a casting connection technique may increase the risk of failure in clinical situations when high stresses exist. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanical retentive groove design comparatively to increase the joint strength by using the three-dimensional finite element analysis model of a 3-unit fixed partial denture. Material and methods: Ten finite element models were constructed. (Model A: One retentive groove, Model B: Two retentive grooves, Model C: Three retentive grooves, Model D: Four retentive grooves, Model E: One horizontal groove and two vertical grooves, Model F: Two horizontal grooves and one vertical groove, Model G: One groove with the enlarged dimension, Model H: Two grooves with the enlarged dimension, Model I: One groove with the increased height, Model J: One groove with the increased width of base). The vertical force was applied to the mesial and the distal fossa to the casting connection of mandibular first molar. Results: The main factors, affecting joint strength of casting connection were both the retention between the primary cast and the secondary cast and the thickness of the primary cast remaining after preparing retentive groove. The increase of retentive force, according to the numbers and the dimension of retentive groove had an effect on distributing stress. However, in some cases, the increase of retentive force resulted in the increase of stress by reducing thickness of the primary cast in the connection area. Conclusion: The design of retentive groove that limits number of retentive groove for metal thickness and increases the depth of retentive groove for retention is highly recommended.
Abstract: Surface topography has a significant influence on seismic wave propagation in a reflection seismic exploration. Effects of surface topography on two-dimensional elastic wave propagation are investigated through modeling using a weighted-averaging (WA) finite-element method (FEM), which is computationally more efficient than conventional FEM. Effects of air layer on wave propagation are also investigated using flat surface models with and without air. To validate our scheme in modeling including topography, we compare WA FEM results for irregular topographic models against those derived from conventional FEM using one set of rectangular elements. For the irregular surface topography models, elastic wave propagation is simulated to show that breaks in slope act as a new source for diffracted waves, and that Rayleigh waves are more seriously distorted by surface topography than P-waves.
