  • The flexural behavior of composite ring stiffened by GFRP and steel pipe is presented in this paper. The effective width is required to construct FEM beam element model to verify the composite flexural behavior of stiffened ring of cylindrical shell structure. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical and FEM results by commercial program ABAQUS to verify the effective width coefficient. The yield, crack and ultimate loads is calculated using theoretical strains that varies depending on yield state and compared with experiment result and FEM results by ABAQUS solid model.

  • Owing to the advantages of reduced weight and wind effect, the space-framed towers that consist of vertical and horizontal members of circular hollow tubular sections have been adopted widely for various purposes. It is critical to guarantee the strengths of tubular joints where vertical and horizontal members are connected structurally to make the entire space-framed system behave as a single tower structure. In this study, a strength evaluation was conducted for T-type tubular joints subjected to the concurrent action of compression and bending. Three of the available design codes, i.e., AISC, Eurocode 3, ISO 19902 were investigated and a design equation was suggested for an ultimate strength interaction between the axial force and bending moment based on nonlinear finite element analyses by selecting the slenderness ratios at the joints as major parameters.

  • This paper describes an experimental research on the structural behavior and the ultimate strength of longitudinally stiffened plates subjected to local, distortional, or mixed-mode buckling under compression. The stiffened plate undergoes local, distortional, or interactive local-distortional buckling according to the flexural rigidity of the plate's longitudinal stiffeners and the width-thickness ratios of the sub-panels of the stiffened plate. A significant post-buckling strength in the local and distortional modes affects the ultimate strength of the longitudinally stiffened plate. Compression tests were conducted on stiffened plates that were fabricated from 4mm-thick SM400 steel plates with a nominal yield stress of 235MPa. A simple strength formula for the Direct Strength Method based on the test results was proposed. This paper proves that the Direct Strength Method can properly predict the ultimate strength of stiffened plates when the local buckling and distortional buckling occur simultaneously or nearly simultaneously.

  • The parameter study of buckling behavior of steel built-up column under compression force is presented in this study. The shear deformation effects due to the bending moment and shear forces are considered for the H-shaped main members along the entire built-up column and batten member connecting double H-shaped main members. The parametric study is performed according to the length of the built-up column, the distance of the H-shaped main members and the number and type of cover plate for battens, respectively. The applicability of AISC design specification of normal and high tension bolted built-up column is investigated. The buckling loads for built-up columns are compared with those obtained from the analytic solution developed in this study, AISC specification, and finite element method based on the beam and plate element, respectively.

  • A nonlinear finite element analysis was conducted in order to examine the moment capacity and flexural behaviour of hollow prestressed concrete filled steel tube(HCFT) piles which compose hollow PHC piles inside thin wall steel tubes. The parameters investigated in this study were various contact conditions between concrete and steel tube, thickness of concrete tube and various PC strands. A simple method is proposed to determine the ultimate flexural strength based on plastic stress distribution method. In order to verify the proposed method, calculated moment capacity of various HCFT piles are compared with the experiment and numerical analysis results.

  • In this study, we propose a new three-node hybrid-mixed curved beam element with the relaxed-equiribrium stress functions for static analysis. The proposed element considering shear deformation is based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. The stress functions are carefully chosen from three important considerations: (i) all the kinematic deformation modes must be suppressed, and (ii) the spurious constraints must be removed in the limiting behaviors via the field-consistency, and (iii) the relaxed equilibrium conditions could be incorporated because it might be impossible to select the stress functions and parameters to fully satisfy both the equiribrium conditions and the suppression of kinematic deformation modes in the three-node curved beam hybrid-mixed formulation. Numerical examples confirm the superior and stable behavior of the proposed element regardless of slenderness ratio and curvature. Besides, the proposed element shows the outstanding performance in predicting the stress resultant distributions.

  • This paper presented equations on the stress evaluation of steel frame pier connections that were composed of a box beam and a circular column. The existing equations, which transformed the circular column into an equivalent box column had some problems; they underestimated a shear lag stress as the joint angle decreased, and overestimated a shear stress as the joint angel increased. Therefore, FE analyses were performed with various parameters, such as joint angle(${\alpha}$), span length-width ratio(L/B), and circular column-to-box beam stiffness ratio(${\alpha}$), and new equations on stress evaluation were proposed based on FE analyses. Furthermore, material and geometric nonlinear analyses were performed to estimate ultimate strength and to confirm the validity of the proposed equations.

  • This research describes a quantitative procedure used to estimate the effect of concrete cracking on stiffness degradation of concrete shear walls and provides analytical references for the seismic design of concrete shear walls. As preliminary research on the seismic response of concrete shear walls, nonlinear transient analysis was performed with commercial FE software. The study presents the nonlinear time history analysis results in terms of concrete damage and cracking behavior induced by seismic input motions. By varying the input motions, concrete strength and shear wall thickness, the seismic responses of a shear wall were examined with nonlinear time history analysis, and the progressive cracking behavior and corresponding hysteresis loop were described. Based on the analysis results, frequency and stiffness degradation of the shear wall from progressive concrete damage and cracking were captured with respect to the seismic levels. The results of this study suggest that stiffness degradation from concrete cracking should be appropriately considered when determining the seismic capacity of RC shear wall structures.

  • The p-version crack model based on integrals of Legendre polynomial and virtual crack extension method is proposed with its potential for application to stress intensity factor computations in linear elastic fracture mechanics. The main advantage of this model is that the data preparation effort is minimal because only a small number of elements are used and high accuracy and the rapid convergence can be achieved in the vicinity of crack tip. There are two important findings from this study. Firstly, the limit value, the strain energy of the exact solution, can be estimated with successive three p-version approximations by ascertaining that the approximations enter the asymptotic range. Secondly, the rate of convergence of p-version model is almost twice that of h-version model on the basis of uniform or quasiuniform mesh refinement for the cracked panel problem subjected to tension.

  • The use of the bearing capacity equation is subjected to several uncertainties. In this study, estimation of the bearing capacity of footings based on the cone resistance q$_{c}$ is investigated. Non-linear finite element analyses based on a state-dependent stress-strain model were performed to obtain the load-settlement responses of axially loaded circular footings. Various soil and footing conditions, including different relative densities, depths of embedment, and footing diameters were considered in the analyses. Based on the finite element results, load-settlement curves were obtained and used to determine the unit limit bearing capacity in terms of the cone resistance q$_{c}$ for footings subjected to surcharge. Values of the unit bearing capacity for different embedment depths were in a narrow range, while considerable variation was observed with relative density D$_{R}$. It was observed that the unit limit bearing capacity normalized with respect to q$_{c}$ decreases as D$_{R}$ increases for a given surcharge.
