  • The coupled vibration characteristics for the fluid-structure interaction systems are investigated through the finite element method. The present paper is focused on vibration characteristics of the cylindrical fluid-storage tank with a baffle. The tank is partially filled with an inviscid and irrotational fluid having a free surface. A baffle is assumed here to have the shape of a thin annular plate and a conical shell, attached to the cylindrical tank and positioned below the fluid surface. The liquid domain is limited by a rigid flat bottom. As the effect of free surface waves is taken into account in the analysis, the bulging and sloshing modes are studied. To demonstrate the validity of present results, they are compared with the published ones. The effect of positions and inner-to-outer radius ratio of annular baffle and setting angles of conical baffle on coupled vibration characteristics is investigated.

  • An analytical method for the hydroelastic vibration of a vessel composed of an upper annular plate and a lower circular plate is developed by the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The two plates are clamped along a rigid cylindrical vessel wall. It is assumed that the fluid bounded by a rigid cylindrical vessel is incompressible and non-viscous. The wet mode shape of the plates is assumed as a combination of the dry mode shapes of the plates. The fluid motion is described by using the fluid displacement potential and determined by using the compatibility conditions along the fluid interface with the plate. Minimizing the Rayleigh quotient based on the energy conservation gives an eigenvalue problem. It is found that the theoretical results can predict well the fluid-coupled natural frequencies comparing with the finite element analysis result.

  • An analytical study is presented on the hydroelastic vibration of two rectangular identical plates coupled with a bounded fluid by using the finite Fourier series expansion method. It is observed that the two contrastive modes, the so called the out-of-phase and in-phase modes appear. The proposed analytical method is verified by observing a good agreement to three dimensional finite element analysis results. All natural frequency of the in-phase modes can be predicted well by the combination of the dry beam modes. The theoretical prediction for the out-of-phase mode can be improved by using the polynomial functions satisfying the plate boundary conditions and fluid volume conservation instead of using dry beam modes.

  • In this study, the seismic analysis of rack structure with fluid-structure interaction is performed through use of the Finite Element Method(FEM) code ANSYS. Fluid-structure interaction can specify in terms of an hydrodynamic effect which is defined as the added mass per unit length divided by the area of the cross section. Using the Floor Response Spectrum(FRS) obtained through the time-history analysis, modal analysis and seismic analysis under Operating Basis Earthquake(OBE) and Safe Shutdown Earthquake(SSE) condition is carried out. The fluid-structure interaction effects on the rack structure are investigated.

  • Vortex-induced vibration (VIV) occurs owing to the vortex generated from the back side of the appendages of ships and submarines during operation. Recently, the importance of high-order modes (HOMs) vibration and fatigue failure has become increasingly emphasized by increasing the speed of ships and the size of structures. In addition, predicting the vibration of HOMs is significantly necessary as the VIV becomes stronger in the fast flow speed condition than in the low flow speed condition. This study introduces a methodology according to HOMs hybrid Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) for predicting the HOMs VIV on the hydrofoils. The HOMs FSI system is verified by comparing the VIV results from the FSI simulation with the experimental results. Finally, the effectiveness of the HOMs FSI is determined by applying the maximum von-Mises stress obtained from the VIV on the hydrofoil to the S-N curve released from Det Norske Veritas (DNV). VIV results from the HOMs FSI include the lock-in characteristics as well as a significant increase of more than 10 times compared with that of low-order modes (LOMs) FSI. In the future works, advanced studies will be required for improving cantilever boundary conditions and the shape of hydrofoils.

  • Because of the high specific stiffness and strength inherent in the sandwich structure composed of facesheet that resists in-plane loads and a core that resists out-of-plane loads, it is often used for large and light-weighted structures. However, inevitably the increased flexibility allows greater deformation-based disturbances in the structures. Thus, it is necessary to analyze the structural safety. To obtain more accurate analytical results, the input disturbances must more closely simulate real load conditions; to improve accuracy, non-linear elements such as gust effects were considered. In addition, the structural safety was analyzed for the iso-grid sandwich panel structure using fluid-structure interactions. For a more realistic simulation, flow velocity fields, which consider the effects of irregular gust fluctuation, were generated and the coupled field was analyzed by mapping the pressure and displacement.

  • A fluid-structure interaction analysis should be performed to evaluate the behavior of the internal fuel and its influence in order to confirm the structural soundness of the fuel tank against external impacts. In the past, fluid-structure interaction analyses have been limited to the obtention of numerical simulation results due to the need for considerable computational resources and excessive computation time. However, recently, computer performance has been dramatically improved, enabling complex numerical analyses such as fluid-structure interaction analysis to be conducted. Lagrangian and Euler coupling methods and Lagrangian based analysis methods are mainly used for fluid-structure interaction analysis. Since both of these methods have their advantages and disadvantages, it is necessary to select the more appropriate one when conducting a numerical analysis. In this study, a numerical analysis of a crash impact test for a fuel tank is performed using ALE. The purpose of the numerical analysis is to estimate the possibility of failure of the fuel tank mounted inside the container when it is subjected to a crash impact. As a result of the numerical analysis, the fluid behavior inside the fuel tank is investigated and the stress generated in the fuel tank and the container structure is calculated, thereby enabling the possibility of fuel tank failure and leakage of the internal fluid to be evaluated.
