  • The attraction activity of the natural baits for sea eels(Astroconger myriaster) was surveyed by using fishing traps in the 3 different fishing ground of southern coastal waters of Korea. Twenty four different baits were experimented and weight for each bait was 50g, the optimal minimum weight owing to our preliminary test. Among the above 24 baits, anchovy(Engraulis japonica), sardine(Sardinops melanosticta), or marine worms(Neanthes japonica)were most effective. In case of sardine bait, the body showed higher attraction activity than the head or viscera and the builded juice of anchovy or sardine showed higher attraction activity than spoiled one.

  • The chemical attractants for sea eels, Astroconger myriaster, were identified by using fish traps in their natural habitat around namhae island, southern part of Korea. The ethyl alcohol extracts of anchovy, Engraulis japonica, which was a very good baits for sea eels showed higher attraction activities than residuals of it. Because sea eels showed high attraction activities to the free amino acid or nucleotides of synthetic anchovy extract, the succeeding experiment was conducted to identify the major chemical attractants among 9 free amino acid and 2 nucleotides by omission test. L-Glutamic acid, L-glycine, taurine, L-methionine or IMP showed highest attraction activities among 11 chemical compounds. But sea eels showed significantly weaker attraction activities to the synthethic extracts and single component than to the natural extract.

  • This study was conducted to determine the attractive effects of Plutella xylostella adults to light emitting diode (LED) trap in greenhouse and compared with those of no light trap and black-light which is typically used in commercial luring lamp. The green LED trap captured more P. xylostella when compared with black-light trap, whereas the no light trap was a little attractive to P. xylostella adults. These results indicated that the green LED traps could be used for environmental insect pest control.

  • The attraction effects of light emitting diode (LED) trap to Spodoptera exigua adults were evaluated in greenhouse and compared with those of no light trap and black-light trap, which is typical used in commercial trap. 7 days later, white LED trap ($83.0{\pm}0.7$) was 2.4 times more attractive than black-light trap ($34.0{\pm}2.6$), whereas the no light trap was little attractive to S. exigua. These results suggest that white LED traps could be used for environmental insect control.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the attraction effects of Sitophilus zeamais and Tribolium castaneum to light emitting diode (LED) trap in granary and compared with the black light bulb (BLB) trap, which is typical used in commercial trap. The red LED trap showed more attractive to S. zeamais and T. castaneum than that of the BLB. Moreover, the external condition of granary was about 1.5 times more attractive to S. zeamais and T. castaneum than the internal condition of granary. These results suggested that red LED trap could be useful to control S. zeamais and T. castaneum in granary.

  • To evaluate light-emitting diode (LED) as potential attractants for Bemisia tabaci adults, attractiveness of white and yellow LED traps were investigated in greenhouse. The yellow LED trap showed the most attractive to B. tabaci adults, followed by a similarly attraction to the white LED trap, whereas the control (no light trap) was little attractive to B. tabaci adults. These results suggested that yellow and white LED traps could be used for environment-friendly insect pest control.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the attraction effects of Sitotroga cerealella and Plodia interpunctella adults to light emitting diode (LED) trap in granary and compared with the results of the black light bulb (BLB) trap, which is typically used as a commercial trap. The blue LED was more attractive to S. cerealella than the BLB. The green LED was significantly more attractive to P. interpunctella than the BLB. Furthermore, the external installation of blue LED and green LED was about 1.7 times more attractive to S. cerealella and P. interpunctella, respectively, than the internal installation. These results indicated that blue LED and green LED traps can be used for eco-friendly insect pest control in granary.

  • In this study, we compare the quality of the mango cv. Irwin cultivated in Jeju and Okinawa by evaluating the total soluble solids (TSS) and antioxidant activity (AA) from ethanol extracts of the fruit. TSS and AA were higher in fruit cultivated at the Research Institute of Climate Change and Agriculture in Jeju (RICA) and Okinawa farm, where the low tree height cultivation method is used, than in fruit cultivated on farm in Jeju. Also, the mangiferin content of the Okinawa farm was higher than those produced on the RICA and Jeju farm house. These results suggest that the lowering tree height cultivation method improves the quality of the mango cv. Irwin.

  • Mating disruption experiments were evaluated and compared in several pheromone traps and sex pheromone composition ratios at commercial chestnut garden for developing alternative control method of D. punctiferalis. The highest attractive was shown in Delta traps at the effective sex pheromone ratio of 75:25 (E10-16:A1:Z10-16:A1). Comparisons of domestic and imported pheromone constituents were not significant difference in 90:10 (E10-16:A1:Z10-16:A1). But, there was significant difference in sex pheromone ratio of 75:25. D. punctiferalis was caught the highest number in Gongju area for attractive test using pheromone trap. Attractive effects with dose of pheromone were showed the highest at 2.5 mg/lure and 1 mg/lure in Gongju area and Cheongyang area respectively. However, there was no significant difference among pheromone dose in Buyeo area. These data could be useful for eco-friendly managing of D. punctiferalis in the chestnut farm.
