Occurrence Probability of Freak Waves at Nearshore of Donghae Harbor in the East Sea (동해항 전면 해역에서의 Freak Waves 발생확률)

  • Over the last 20 years, freak waves have attracted many researchers because of their unexpected behaviors and damages on offshore structures and vessels in the ocean and coastal waters. Despite many researches on the causes, mechanisms and occurrence of freak waves, we have not reached consensus on the results of the researches. This paper presents the occurrence probability of freak waves based on the analysis of wave records measured at coastal waters of Donghae harbor in the East Sea. Three freak waves were found which satisfied conditions of m and $H_S{\geq}2.5m$ and $H_m/H_S{\geq}2$. The occurrence probabilities of freak waves were estimated from extreme distributions by Mori, Rayleigh and Ahn, and found to be on the orders of O($10^{-1}$), O($10^{-2}$), and O($10^{-3}$), respectively. The occurrence probabilities of freak waves measured from waves records were estimated between O($10^{-2}$) and O($10^{-3}$), which were located between predictions by Rayleigh and Ahn's extreme probability distributions. However, we need more analysis of wave records obtained from diverse field conditions in order to verify the accuracy of the estimation of occurrence probability of freak waves.

  • In recent years, diversified demand for marine utilization has been increasing not only through the development projects for the utilization of the conventional coastal zone but also by the development of marine leisure sports and marine energy. It is very important to understand the characteristics of blue for safe and economical utilization of the ocean. Using the observed wave data, we derive the wave parameters to represent the irregular sea state proposed in the previous studies and examine the relationship between them to confirm the characteristics of the ocean wave.

Experimental and Numerical Analyses for Irregular Wave Breaking over a Shelf Region (Shelf 지형에서 불규칙파의 쇄파실험 및 수치해석)

  • In this study, wave breakings over a shelf region are investigated under irregular wave conditions through laboratory experiments in a wave flume. Numerical simulations based on the Boussinesq-type equations are also conducted. The characteristics of breaking waves such as significant wave height, crest and trough heights, the mean water level and the stable wave height are obtained by analyzing laboratory measurements in detail. Obtained results are compared with those of the Boussinesq-type equations model. A very reasonable agreements is observed. The broken waves over a horizontal bottom asymptotically approach a stable wave height($H_{stable}$). In this study, the relative stable wave height is found as $H_{stable}/h{\fallingdotseq}0.56$ for irregular wave.

  • Using the wave data by typhoons LEE, VERA, THELMA which gave great damages in the Korean penisula, the significant waves based on zero-up & down crossing and Tucker-Draper method are compared with those from the wave energy spectrum. And the histograms of individual waves obtained from zero-up crossing method are presented and compared with the Rayleigh, Weibull, Gluhovski, Ibrageemov and Goda distributions, and also the Chi-square goodness of fit test is applied to each theoretical distributions. It is shown that the significant wave heights by zero-up crossing method are very well agreed to those by energy spectrum method. The wave heights are found to well follow the Rayleigh and Goda distributions by the Chi-square test.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyse the effect of ocean weather factors on shipments of swimming crab. We use the data of data portal and ocean weather factors (mean wind velocity, mean atmospheric pressure, mean relative humidity, mean air temperature, mean water temperature, mean maximum wave height, mean significant wave height, maximum significant wave height, maximum wave height, mean wave period, maximum wave period). We did statistical analysis using Poisson regression analysis and negative binomial regression analysis. As the result of study, important factors influential in the shipments of swimming crab turn out to be mean wind velocity, mean atmospheric pressure, mean relative humidity, mean water temperature, maximum wave height, mean wave period and maximum wave period. the shipments of swimming crab increases as mean wind velocity, mean atmospheric pressure, mean relative humidity, mean water temperature increases or mean wave period increase. However, as maximum wave height, maximum wave period decreases, the shipment of swimming crab increases.

  • We propose a marine observation system using existing light buoys to observe various marine information of marine locations. Our proposed ocean observation system is composed of the existing standard light buoy type and can be easily connected to the light buoy. The proposed marine observation system measures the mean wave height, maximum wave height, mean wave height and water temperature measured in the ocean. Besides, it can measure the air pressure, temperature, wind speed and wind speed in real time. In order to measure important peaks in marine observations, 2200 peak data are collected for 10 minutes, and the collected data are subjected to spectral analysis to extract significant wave and wave period data. The developed system removes the noise by using the filter because the marine observation system attaches to the light buoy. We compare and analyze the measurement data of the existing proven floating marine observation system and the standard equivalent system developed. Also, it is proved that the data of the standard type backbone ocean observation system developed through the comparative experiment is similar to that of the existing ocean observation system.

A Study on the Evaluation of Cargo Securing Safety for Car ferry Ships Using Wave Height Information (해상 파고 정보를 활용한 카페리 선박의 고박안전성 평가에 관한 연구)

  • Cargo securing safety, which is one factor for the safe operation of car ferry ships, has been applied since 2015 and evaluated by comparing the hull motion and securing load capacity generated by waves. To ensure the safe operation of the 3700 ton class car ferry, it is important to analyze the hull acceleration motion based on the sea wave information of the navigation area to determine the cargo securing load that can prevent the movement of cargo. In this study, the meteorological information of three wave buoys installed in Busan and Jeju area was analyzed for the past 5 years. In addition, the hull acceleration was measured in actual sea conditions and compared to that of numerical simulations. Under the condition of a significant wave height of 2.5 m from Feb to Mar, except typhoon seasons, the lateral acceleration was observed to be 1.5 m/s2 in real ship measuring and 1.8 m/s2 in numerical calculation. It was analyzed to be less than 40% under general weather conditions compared to the high wave warning using an approximate formula for estimating the hull motion by wave height. The cargo securing safety proposed in this study will be widely used based on the actual measuring acceleration with the sea wave height.

  • We have analyzed the characteristics of the monthly mean sea surface winds and wind waves near the Korean marginal seas in the 2002 year on the basis of prediction results of the sea surface winds from MM5/KMA model, which is being used for the operation system at the Korea Meteorological Administration and the third generation wave model, WAVEWATCH-III. which takes the sea surface winds derived from MM5/KMA model as the initial data. Statistical comparisons have been applied with both the marine meteorological observation buoy and the TOPEX/POSEIDON satellite wave heights data to verify the model results. The correlation coefficients between the models and observation data reach up to about 60-80%, supporting that these models satisfactorily simulate the sea surface winds and wave heights even at the coastal regions except for Chilbal-Do located very close to the land. Based on these verification results, the distributions of monthly mean sea surface winds, significant wave heights, wave lengths and wave periods around the Korean marginal seas during 2002 year have been represented.

  • A large scale hydrological laboratory model tests for the geotextile tube were conducted to investigate the stability of geotextile tube and the capability of breakwater with variations of significant wave height, percentage of soil filling, and the water level above geotextile tube. The sliding displacement of geotextile tube is measured to check the stability of geotextile tube for given the various significant wane heights. The marked mash was laid out at the bottom of water channel to measure the displacement of geotextile tube. The bench mark was furnished in the upper part of water channel and the initial location was marked every 10cm interval to measure the displacement of geotextile tube. The wane transmit ratios are analyzed with the variations of soil filling of tube and of the top crown height wave above the geotextile tube in order to study the performance of brekwater before and after the installation of geotextile tube.
